TEMPEST: Neon Storm 🌀

A modern web recreation of the classic arcade game Tempest, inspired by the legendary Tempest 2000 from the Atari Jaguar (1994).

Authentic Tempest 2000 Style

  • Psychedelic visuals - Color cycling starfield and pulsing effects
  • Varied web shapes - Circle, square, triangle, plus, infinity, vee, flat, cross
  • Melt-O-Vision - Screen distortion effect on death
  • Bloom & glow - Neon aesthetic with post-processing

Power-Up System

Collect power-ups dropped by enemies to gain abilities:

Level Power-Up Effect
1 Particle Laser Spread shot - fires 3 bullets
2 Jump Press W/↑ to jump over enemies
3 AI Droid Companion that auto-targets enemies

Enemy Types

  • 🔷 Flippers - Basic enemies that flip along lanes
  • 🟠 Tankers - Split into smaller enemies when destroyed
  • 🟢 Spikers - Leave deadly spikes on the web
  • 🟡 Fuseballs - Bounce between lanes unpredictably
  • 💗 Pulsars - Electrify entire lanes periodically

Audio

  • Breakbeat hardcore soundtrack at 150 BPM
  • Procedural sound effects - All audio generated with Web Audio API
  • T2K-style sounds - Laser zaps, chunky explosions, power-up jingles

🎯 Gameplay Tips

  1. Collect power-ups - They make a huge difference
  2. Use the SuperZapper wisely - You only get one per level
  3. Watch for Fuseballs - They move erratically between lanes
  4. Jump over enemies - Once you have the Jump power-up
  5. Stay mobile - Standing still makes you an easy target
