Fix: Report a stopped Cortex as stopped after systemd gave up on it - #1660
On Linux, agentop service stop on a unit that systemd had already given up on, where a crash loop hit the start limit and the unit went failed, left the unit failed. systemd's stop of a failed unit does nothing, so disable --now only changed it to disabled. service status then took the deliberate stop for a crash:
Cortex is NOT running: systemd stopped restarting it (exit-code) after 5 restart(s).
Claude Code and OpenCode will fail while this is true. Fix the cause in the log, then:
agentop service restart
It exited 1. Reproduced on Debian 13 (systemd 257) and Ubuntu (261).
Fix
controlService runs systemctl --user reset-failed cortex.serviceafter a successful stop. The unit ends inactive and disabled, which status reports as Cortex is stopped, and stays stopped …, exit 0. It runs after the stop, not before: nothing is left running for the start limit to protect, and systemd's own restarts are untouched.
Corrected the UnitFileState comment. A unit file that was never enabled also reads disabled, so that value alone does not tell our stop apart from anyone else's.
One line in docs/laptop-service.md next to the existing note on start/restart clearing the start limit.
Testing
TestControlService_Linux: stop now expects disable --now, then reset-failed.
TestServiceLifecycle_RealSystemd gains the case end to end: a second crash loop to the start limit, then stop, then the unit state and status.
With the fix, it passes on systemd 257 (Debian 13) and 261 (Ubuntu).
With the fix reverted, it fails on both: the unit stays active:failed enabled:disabled, and status prints the crash message above.
GOWORK=off go vet ./..., gofmt -l . and the full cmd/agentop suite pass on macOS.
`agentop service stop` on a unit systemd had already given up on (failed,
after a crash loop hit the start limit) left it failed: systemd's stop of
a failed unit is a no-op, so `disable --now` only flipped it to disabled.
`service status` then read the deliberate stop as a crash, said "systemd
stopped restarting it" and advised `agentop service restart`, exit 1.
Clear the failed state after a successful stop, so the unit ends inactive
and disabled, which status reports as stopped (exit 0). After the stop
rather than before: nothing is left running for the start limit to
protect, and systemd's own restarts are untouched.
Also correct the UnitFileState comment: disabled is also what a unit file
that was never enabled reports, so it does not by itself tell our stop
from anyone else's.
TestServiceLifecycle_RealSystemd gains the case: a second crash loop to
the start limit, then stop, then status. It passes on systemd 257 (Debian
13) and 261 (Ubuntu), and fails on both with the fix reverted.

After a successful systemd stop, controlService now clears the unit’s start-limit failure state. Unit and integration tests verify the behavior, and the Linux service documentation describes when systemd crash records are cleared.

After a successful stop, controlService clears the unit’s start-limit failure state. Tests check the reset command and verify that a failed unit is reported as stopped after stopping. The documentation explains that start, restart, and install clear the crash record before starting, while stop clears it afterward.
Issue 945 covers accurate service status and control behavior across states. This change addresses the failed-unit stop behavior described in that issue.

Surface a failed reset-failed after service stop.
clearStartLimit discards the reset-failed error, and controlService returns nil after a successful disable --now. If reset-failed fails on a failed unit, service stop still exits 0, and service status reports a crash with exit 1. Return or print the reset error on the stop path.

Cover stop when reset-failed fails after a successful disable --now.
The stop case runs only with an all-success stub. The failure subtest fails at disable --now, so reset-failed never runs. No test runs the case where disable --now succeeds and reset-failed exits nonzero.
Add that case. Assert that disable --now runs before reset-failed. Do not require a nil return in this case. clearStartLimit currently discards the reset-failed error. The expected return value depends on how the implementation handles that error, so the assertion should match that handling.

Summary
The fix does what it says. Running systemctl --user reset-failed after a successful disable --now moves a unit systemd had given up on from failed/disabled to inactive/disabled, and reportUnitNotAnswering reports that as "stopped, and stays stopped" with exit 0. Running it after the stop rather than before also keeps systemd's own start-limit protection for crash loops intact. No blocking issues.
How I tested it
I wrote a probe against head and base (077cae33): a stateful fake systemctl that copies systemd's behaviour for disable --now (a no-op stop on a failed unit), reset-failed and show. It then runs controlService("linux","stop") → systemdUnitState() → reportUnitNotAnswering, starting from each of these states:
Starting state
base
head
failed / start-limit-hit, enabled (the target case)
exit 1, "systemd stopped restarting it"
exit 0, stopped
failed / exit-code, enabled (restarts used up)
exit 1
exit 0
failed, already disabled (stop run twice)
exit 1
exit 0
activating / auto-restart
exit 0
exit 0
active / running
exit 0
exit 0
inactive, enabled (systemctl stop by hand)
exit 0
exit 0
The cmd/agentop unit tests pass on head, including TestControlService_Linux with the new call order. go vet and gofmt -l are clean. I could not run TestServiceLifecycle_RealSystemd locally: the sandbox has no systemd user manager. The agentop CI job runs it with AGENTOP_SYSTEMD_TESTS=required, so it cannot skip silently, and that job is green.
This PR does not touch the systemctl show parser. Unknown keys are still skipped and NRestarts is still read as a best-effort Atoi, so an unexpected format cannot break the whole parse.
One non-blocking note: reset-failed errors are still dropped on the stop path, as clearStartLimit already does on start and restart. That fits the function's documented contract. The rare case where it fails would show a crash in status, which is no worse than today.
