Problem

The agentop detail pane does not show a tool call and its result where they occur (#1657).

On a Claude Code request, the last turn is an assistant message that calls a tool, then a user message with the result. The detail pane showed:

  • The assistant message: toolCallNames: "Bash" only. No command.
  • The user message: contentBytes: 1843 only. It looked empty.

The arguments were only on the earlier response row's toolCalls, and view=summary strips that field. The results were in one folded toolResults list at the end of the event, with no link to a message.

Change

Parser (Anthropic Messages and Chat Completions):

  • InferenceMessage.ToolUseIDs: the ids of the message's tool blocks, joined by ", ". Assistant messages give their call ids. User messages give their result ids. A string, as with ToolCallNames, so the struct stays comparable for the interner.
  • InferenceExtension.HistoryToolCalls: the tool calls the request sends back, with ids and arguments.
    • This is a new field and not ToolCalls. OPA, SPARC, CPEX and lineage read ToolCalls as the calls the model asks for now.

Store. The new data has the same rules as ToolResults:

  • No plugin reads it.
  • view=summary drops HistoryToolCalls. The shape guard is now 29.
  • usage.ReplayCopy clears it.
  • The interner shares the arguments (shareToolCalls), and the ids and names through internID.
  • The archive writes long arguments as references under a new key ta. A reader older than this change reads them back as empty, which is the same limit tr has.

agentop. filterForDetail moves each call under the assistant message that names its id, as toolCalls, and each result under the user message, as toolResults. An entry that no message names stays in its top-level list. y (yank) still writes the event as received.

Not changed

  • The Responses API (Codex). Its tool calls are separate input items, not messages.
  • The archive's existing keys and the format version.

Size

On one live session, 291 tool calls had 149 KB of arguments in total, against 927 KB of tool results. Each request sends the whole history again, so the interner and the archive share the arguments the same way they share results.

Tests

  • Parser: Anthropic and Chat Completions record the ids and history calls. ToolCalls stays empty on a request.
  • Interner: the arguments are shared across turns, with a tunnel row between turns.
  • Archive: long arguments are references, short ones stay inline, and a round trip keeps them.
  • view=summary drops HistoryToolCalls. ReplayCopy clears it.
  • agentop: the call and the result show under their messages, and an unmatched result stays at the top level.
  • Each new test fails without its fix.
  • core and cmd/agentop go test ./... pass. go vet is clean on core and cmd/*.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Tool calls and their results are now grouped with the related messages in session details, making conversation flows easier to follow.
    • Earlier tool calls, including their names, IDs, and arguments, are now retained when parsing supported requests.
    • Session archives now preserve longer tool-call arguments across save and restore.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Requests with non-string tool-call IDs or structured arguments are now handled without losing the argument content.

The detail pane showed a tool-only assistant message as a tool name,
and the user message after it as a byte count. The arguments were only
on an earlier response row, which view=summary strips. The results were
in one folded list, not linked to a message.

The parser now records:

- InferenceMessage.ToolUseIDs: the ids of the message's tool_use or
  tool_result blocks.
- InferenceExtension.HistoryToolCalls: the tool calls the request sends
back, with ids and arguments. This is not ToolCalls, which plugins
read as the calls the model asks for now.

No plugin reads the new fields. view=summary drops HistoryToolCalls,
ReplayCopy clears it, and the interner and the archive share its
arguments (archive key "ta").

agentop moves each call and result under the message that names it.

Summary

The request parser now records each message's tool block ids (ToolUseIDs) and the tool calls the request re-sends (HistoryToolCalls). Those fields follow the ToolResults rules everywhere they need to: view=summary, ReplayCopy, the interner and the archive (new ta key). agentop nests each call and result under the message that sent it. Keeping these calls out of ToolCalls is the right call: OPA, SPARC, CPEX and lineage read that field as the calls the model is asking for now. The archive join bounds check, the shape-guard bump to 29 and the interner prefix sharing all match the existing patterns. I have two non-blocking comments inline.

Locally at the PR head I ran go test on core/plugins/inferenceparser, core/session/..., core/sessionapi, core/cost/usage and cmd/agentop/tui. All pass. TestBuildBudget in core/session/timeline failed once on a 50ms timing budget and passed on rerun. That test is a timing flake and is not related to this change.

suggestion: "no plugin reads it" isn't quite true. The script plugin passes the whole extension to every hook: core/plugins/script/message.go:40 does req["inference"] = e. So historyToolCalls now goes to every script request and response message, the same way toolResults already does. That's fine to keep, but two things follow. Script hooks can now see every earlier call's arguments, and each script message gets bigger with the conversation (about 149 KB of arguments on the session in the PR description). Could you either reword this to "no policy plugin reads it; the script plugin passes the extension through unchanged", or have requestMessage drop the history-only fields if scripts shouldn't get them?

nit: Chat-completions results never match here. A "role":"tool" message has its id in toolUseId (singular), not toolUseIds, so its toolResults entry stays in the top-level list. That message already shows the same text as its content. This isn't a regression, but the top-level list on chat-completions requests will always repeat what the messages show. If you want the views to agree, you could also match on msg["toolUseId"] and drop the matched entry instead of nesting it. It could also be a follow-up.

… JSON type

Fixes review: a chat-completions tool_calls arguments value or id that is not a
JSON string failed the decode of the whole request.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Decode toolcallid with rawText so a numeric value does not fail the request.

965-968: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Decode tool_call_id with rawText so a numeric value does not fail the request.

A role: "tool" message with a non-string tool_call_id fails in inferenceMessage.UnmarshalJSON. The decode error returns to parseOpenAIRequest, which returns nil, so the request loses its telemetry. Decode the field as json.RawMessage and read it with rawText, as the tool_calls id already is. Replace the existing assignment rather than adding a second one.

Suggested fix

Stop splitting toolUseIds on ", " when IDs can contain it.

Chat Completions tool call IDs reach toolUseIds unchanged. A call with ID call, part is not matched and stays top-level. If another call in the same history has ID call or part, nestToolBlocks nests that call under the message that carried call, part. Carry the IDs as a list, or reject IDs that contain ", " in the parser. The parser fix is not verified as safe, so no diff is proposed.

Document the actual ToolUseIDs order, or emit ids in block order.

The field comment says the ids are "joined by , in block order". flattenAnthropicContent and UnmarshalJSON instead collect all tool_use ids first and then all tool_result ids. In a message that has a tool_result before a tool_use, the field reports the call id first. Either emit the ids in block order, or change the comment to say that tool calls come first and tool results follow.

Summary

Re-review of 94ec477, which fixes the decode regression I missed on f96e82d. A chat-completions tool_calls[].id or function.arguments that was not a JSON string failed inferenceMessage.UnmarshalJSON, and with it the whole request. The fix works. I wrote probe bodies for every field this PR now decodes and ran them against this head and against main. The fields were chat id and function.arguments, and Anthropic tool_use id and input. I tried each one as a string, object, null, number, bool, array and absent. All 28 of those bodies parse on head, and HistoryToolCalls and ToolUseIDs come out as rawText describes. Some bodies still return nil on head: a non-string function.name, a non-object function, or a non-string tool_call_id. Each of those returns nil on main too, because base already decoded those fields with the same types, so none of them is a regression. With the f96e82d versions of plugin.go and anthropic.go, TestHistoryToolCallsOfAnUnexpectedTypeKeepTheRequestParsed fails ("chat-completions request not parsed"). It passes with the fix.

At the PR head I ran go test on core/plugins/inferenceparser, core/session/..., core/sessionapi, core/cost/usage, core/pipeline, cmd/agentop/tui and cmd/agentop/apiclient. All pass. go vet is clean on the touched packages, and go build ./... in core is clean. My two earlier comments (the script plugin also sees historyToolCalls, and chat-completions role:tool results don't nest) have no reply yet. Both are still non-blocking. I have one new nit inline.

nit: A tool_use block with "input": null is recorded as Arguments: "null". The chat path gets "" for the same value, because rawText returns "" for null. So agentop shows arguments: "null" under an Anthropic message but nothing under a chat-completions one. Don't switch to rawText(b.Input), because that would unquote a string input. Something like if jsonPresent(b.Input) { args = string(b.Input) } would make the two paths agree. Not blocking: real clients send {}.
