Feat: Record the model that served each inference response - #1651
A recorded inference event names only the model the client asked for (inference.model). Through a LiteLLM gateway, the viewer cannot show which model answered.
I measured this on 2026-11-03 against the four configured servers:
Server
Requested
body.model
x-litellm-model-name
ete-int (LiteLLM 1.105.1)
claude-opus-5-5
same as requested

On LiteLLM, the body repeats the requested name, and only the header names the deployment. LiteLLM's public docs do not list x-litellm-model-name, but all three gateways send it on /v1/chat/completions and on /v1/messages.
Change
New field inference.servedModel on the response event (core/pipeline/extensions.go).
inference-parser sets it (served_model.go):
the x-litellm-model-name header, when present;
else the response body's own model field, for a provider that answers with a dated version. The field is now decoded in all three dialects (chat completions, Anthropic Messages, Responses API), both buffered and streamed.
It is cleared when it equals inference.model, so a server that answers under the requested name records nothing new.
It is decided once per response, at the start of settleCost. Every response path already ends there exactly once.
The value comes from the upstream, so it is sanitized: control runes are replaced, and the length is capped at 256 bytes on a rune boundary.
agentop: the detail pane shows a served: line when the field is set. The events table's model column does not change.
Docs:docs/session-api.md and CLAUDE.md describe the field.
What does not change
inference.model keeps the requested name. Settlement, pricing, the cost ledger, /v1/usage and agentop's model column all read it, as before.
Cost: a LiteLLM gateway already reports cost from the model it ran (x-litellm-response-cost). The live run below shows the same figures as a direct call.
No new field elsewhere: on Ollama and on a server with neither source, the field is absent, so the JSON is byte-for-byte as before.
view=summary keeps the field, like requestedModel: the detail pane reads it from the projected event. TestSummarizeEvent_ShapeIsGuarded is updated to 28 fields.
Verification
served_model_test.go covers 7 buffered cases (header vs body, both dialects, equal-to-request, neither source), 2 streamed cases, and an untrusted header.
I checked that the tests fail without the change: 7 tests fail with the header read disabled, and 4 fail with the body read disabled.
go test ./... passes for core, cmd/agentop and cmd/cortex (full profile). go vet and the build pass for cmd/cortex-envoy, cmd/cortex-praxis and scripts/readme-demo.
Live run: a cortex built from this branch, on scratch ports with only inference-parser, and one request through it to each server:

Not covered
Bob's gateway (premium-ide): no request could be sent through the scratch proxy, because Bob signs each request. On 2026-09-25 it sent no model header, and its body repeats premium-ide, so the field is expected to stay absent there.
True alias: I did not test a true alias such as claude-advantage-assist. Every server tested resolved the name to a deployment, so the same result is expected.
Real-Envoy run: none for cortex-envoy. The parser reads pctx.ResponseHeaders, which extproc fills the same way.
Response details now show the model actually served when it differs from the requested model. The value is taken from the upstream response and is available in session event data.
Documentation
Clarified that the served model is for display; pricing continues to use the requested model.
Through a LiteLLM gateway, the recorded model is only the name the client
asked for, so the viewer cannot show which model answered. Measured on
three LiteLLM 1.105.1 gateways, the response body repeats the requested
name, and only the x-litellm-model-name header names the deployment
(for example bedrock/us.anthropic.claude-opus-4-6-v1 for claude-opus-4-6).
inference-parser now records inference.servedModel on the response:
the x-litellm-model-name header first, else the body's own "model" field.
It is set only when it differs from inference.model, so a server that
answers under the requested name (Ollama, Bob) records nothing new.
Pricing still follows inference.model. agentop's detail pane shows the
value on a "served:" line.

The inference parser records an upstream-served model from the response header or supported response bodies when it differs from the requested model. The event projection retains the value, and the agentop detail pane displays it. Pricing continues to use the requested model.

Summary
Capture and settle served model core/pipeline/extensions.go, core/plugins/inferenceparser/*, core/plugins/inferenceparser/served_model_test.go
The inference extension adds optional ServedModel data. The parser reads model names from response headers and supported body formats. Settlement prioritizes the x-litellm-model-name header, sanitizes the value, and leaves it empty when it matches the requested model. Tests cover header precedence, body fallback, streaming responses, and sanitization.
Expose served model in events and detail pane core/sessionapi/summary_test.go, cmd/agentop/tui/detail_pane.go, cmd/agentop/tui/detail_pane_test.go, docs/session-api.md, CLAUDE.md
Session projection tests verify that ServedModel is retained. The detail pane displays the value when present. The documentation describes the field’s source and confirms pricing uses inference.model.

Explanation
The title "Feat: Record the model that served each inference response" matches the main change. The PR adds an inference.servedModel field that records the upstream-reported model when it differs from the requested model, via the x-litellm-model-name header or the response body's model field. The title names the primary change, uses a conventional commit prefix, and is specific enough for a reader scanning history.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1642 has one direct coding objective group. It asks that the served model be recorded on the response event, with x-litellm-model-name read first and the response body model field second, and that agentop show it when it differs from the requested model.
Header precedence: settleServedModel in core/plugins/inferenceparser/served_model.go reads X-Litellm-Model-Name from pctx.ResponseHeaders and overrides any body-derived value. noteBodyModel stores the body model only when no value is set yet. This matches the issue order.
Body fallback: the diff adds body model decoding in the Anthropic, OpenAI chat-completions, and Responses parsers (buffered and streamed), and it calls noteBodyModel from each path.
Difference-only recording: settleServedModel clears ServedModel when it equals Model, so the field is set only when the served name differs from the requested name.
Recording point: settleCost in core/plugins/inferenceparser/cost.go calls settleServedModel once per response, after the already-settled check.
Display: servedHeader in cmd/agentop/tui/detail_pane.go renders a served: line when Inference.ServedModel is nonempty. The value passes through sanitizeLabel.
Tests: served_model_test.go covers header versus body precedence, both dialects, equal-to-request suppression, streamed cases, and sanitization. TestServedHeader covers the detail-pane line.
The PR uses inference.servedModel instead of the issue's example name inference.responseModel. The issue frames the name as an example, so this is accepted. The issue asks for display in agentop when the names differ. The detail pane satisfies this. The events table model column is unchanged, which the issue does not require.
Limits: I read the parser wiring from the whole-PR diff summary and the served_model.go source. I did not read the Anthropic, OpenAI, and Responses hunks line by line. The PR description reports a live run and passing tests, which I did not re-run.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed area supports issue #1642:
core/pipeline/extensions.go: adds the ServedModel field that carries the required value.
core/plugins/inferenceparser/*.go (served_model.go, cost.go, anthropic.go, plugin.go, responses.go): record the served model from header and body. This is the core requirement.
cmd/agentop/tui/detail_pane.go and detail_pane_test.go: display the served model, as the issue requires.
core/sessionapi/summary_test.go: updates the shape guard for the new field. This follows from adding the field and keeps view=summary consistent with the detail pane.
docs/session-api.md and CLAUDE.md: document the new field. These changes are documentation of the new schema and do not add behavior.
I found no unrelated behavior change in the diff summary. The requested-model fields used for settlement and pricing are unchanged, as the PR description states.

Add a buffered Responses API case to TestServedModel.
The table covers chat completions and Anthropic Messages, but no /v1/responses case. A regression that removes the body-model capture from parseResponsesJSON would leave every TestServedModel case passing. Add a header-free Responses case whose body names a dated model:

Add a header-free `/v1/responses` case to `TestServedModel` whose response body
contains a dated model name and whose expected `ServedModel` is that name. This
should verify that `parseResponsesJSON` captures the body model while leaving
the requested `Model` unchanged.
Add a header-free OpenAI stream case to TestServedModelStreams.
Add a header-free OpenAI stream case to TestServedModel_Streams.
The OpenAI streamed case sends a x-litellm-model-name header. The header overrides the chunk model in settleServedModel. Removing the chunk-model capture leaves this test passing, so the streamed OpenAI body-model path has no coverage. Add a case with no header and a chunk model that differs from the request.

Summary
This adds inference.servedModel: the x-litellm-model-name header first, then the body's model field, cleared when it equals inference.model. It is decided in settleCost, so pricing still uses only inference.model. I traced every settleCost call site. Running settleServedModel more than once is harmless, because settleCost does not latch when nothing is priced and the function is idempotent. I also checked the one gap the tests leave, the Responses API dialect. Locally, buffered /v1/responses and streamed /v1/responses (via response.created/response.completed) both set the field, and so does streamed chat completions without a header. Sanitization is sound: SanitizeControlRunes already replaces invalid UTF-8, so the only split rune can come from the 256-byte cut, and ToValidUTF8 handles that. Nothing blocks this. One small suggestion about the agentop JSON tree and one nit about a test message are inline.

suggestion: The served: header line shows the value, but filterForDetail builds the JSON tree under it from inferenceRespKeys (line ~494), and servedModel is not in that list. So a response row's tree drops the field, even though requestedModel is kept there. A reader who expands the tree, or searches it for the bedrock/... name, will not find it there. It is still in the yanked JSON. Consider adding "servedModel" to inferenceRespKeys, with a check in a test like TestFilterForDetail_KeepsRequestedModel. If you want it only on the header line, a short comment saying so would help.

nit: This message, and the 28 since ServedModel comment further down, say the detail pane's model: line reads the field. It is the new served: line (servedHeader). The text was copied from the requestedModel case above.
