ClassicOMSI

Fork of openOMSI License

Warning

Work in progress. ClassicOMSI is an independent, unofficial flavour of openOMSI, itself in early development. Expect bugs, and expect the classic launcher described below to arrive step by step.

ClassicOMSI is an unofficial flavour of openOMSI - the from-scratch, 64-bit recreation of the bus simulator OMSI 2, written in Rust. It is openOMSI with a launcher like the original OMSI 2's: our goal is that classic launcher, while keeping openOMSI and all of its features - the engine, the formats and the fixes are openOMSI's, and ClassicOMSI follows its main. It loads the existing OMSI 2 maps, buses, scenery and mods as they are.

It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Important

ClassicOMSI needs an installed copy of OMSI 2. It contains no game content of its own: it plays on the maps, vehicles and other files of your OMSI 2 and will not start without one. The OMSI 2 folder is never written to.

The goal: a classic launcher

The heart of this fork is a classic launcher in the style of OMSI 2: the familiar start screen - map, vehicle, time, weather, date, timetable, traffic - in one plain window, without the modern extras.

  • Vanilla and Vanilla+ are the graphics. The picture is OMSI 2's (Vanilla), or OMSI 2's with a few modern niceties - shadows, ambient occlusion, reflections (Vanilla+). openOMSI's physically based Enhanced and ray-traced Enhanced+ renderers are left out of the launcher.
  • OMSI 2's look and feel - its lighting, its headlights, its glass and its liveries as the original shows them, measured against OMSI 2 where it can be.
  • Simple to start - pick a map and a bus and drive, as in OMSI 2.

How it differs from openOMSI

ClassicOMSI follows openOMSI's main in full - every fix and feature of openOMSI is here - and adds its own identity on top:

openOMSI ClassicOMSI
Name and logo openOMSI ClassicOMSI, the bus-stop "H"
Accent colour amber green
Programs openomsi.exe, openomsi-launcher-app.exe classicomsi.exe, classicomsi-launcher-app.exe
Settings, profiles and saves ~/.openomsi ~/.classicomsi (openOMSI's copied in at the first start)
Updates openOMSI's releases ClassicOMSI's releases
Windows installation Programs\openOMSI Programs\ClassicOMSI, beside openOMSI

Fixes made here are offered to openOMSI as pull requests as well, so that both projects benefit.

Version

The first release is 0.4.0: Windows, macOS and Linux builds on the Releases page. Every release starts as a beta and is promoted to a stable release once tested.

Building from source

git clone https://github.com/rafaelkaiz/ClassicOMSI.git && cd ClassicOMSI
scripts\build-windows.cmd # Windows → dist\windows\openomsi.exe
scripts/build-linux.sh # Linux → dist/linux/openomsi
scripts/build-macos.sh # macOS → dist/macos/openOMSI.app

Set OPENOMSI_VERSION (for example 0.4.0) before building to stamp the version. Needs the latest Rust stable and the platform's C toolchain; details in docs/BUILDING.md. The program and its files still carry openOMSI's internal names (openomsi.exe, OPENOMSI_VERSION) for now.

To take in openOMSI's latest changes:

git remote add upstream https://github.com/openOMSI-org/openOMSI.git
git fetch upstream && git merge upstream/main

Acknowledgements

ClassicOMSI is built on the work of the openOMSI project and its contributors - the engine, the renderer, the formats, the launcher and nearly everything else here is theirs.

Trademarks

ClassicOMSI is an independent project. It is not the official openOMSI, nor endorsed by it: openOMSI's name and logos belong to their creator (see TRADEMARKS.md), and the official project is openOMSI-org/openOMSI. OMSI and OMSI 2 are trademarks of their respective owners; ClassicOMSI is not affiliated with or endorsed by them. The ClassicOMSI logo is this project's own; its bus-stop "H" is the common German road sign.

License

GNU Affero General Public License v3.0, as openOMSI. If you share a build of ClassicOMSI, its source - this repository - comes with it.
