- Mean is designated by μ (lower case mu)
- Standard error (SE) is designated by σ because it is a standard deviation. σ is rarely known and so is estimated from a sample by either:
- The standard deviation of its sampling distribution: σM / sqrt (N)
- The variance of the sampling distribution: σ2M/N
- Variance is σ2
- μM = μ
- Standard deviation is designated by σM (lower case Greek sigma or the Latin letter s) and is:
- σM = σ / sqrt (N) and so is smaller than the σ of the population
- Variance, σM is:
- σM2
- σ2/N and so is smaller than the σ2 of the population
