Rehearsal of the macro tokens branch before the upstream pull request is updated. Not for merging.

The base branch is the current head of the macro format and storage branch (upstream pull request 465, rehearsed as pull request 24 here), which now carries the engine building blocks' maintainer-review round and upstream main at b8771d5. The diff shows only this branch's changes.

This round is the merge-forward of that base (no conflicts); the branch's own commits are unchanged. Every cargo xtask ci step passes locally (2,274 tests).

Every Alt, H, B letter ran home.borders with no params, which defaults to
a bottom border, so H,B,N (No Border) and H,B,A (All Borders) both drew a
bottom border. keytips.json entries now take optional fixed `params`
(Action::CommandWith / DialogWith), and each Borders menu letter passes the
preset Excel's menu gives it. H,B,M opens Format Cells on the Border tab.
Erase Border, Line Color and Line Style are reserved (pending) instead of
drawing a bottom border.

MATCH, XMATCH, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, XLOOKUP and LOOKUP compared numbers at
15 significant digits (through compare / compare_numbers), so a computed
key such as =0.1+0.2 (0.30000000000000004) found 0.3. Excel 365 compares
lookup keys exactly in exact, approximate and binary search modes, while
=, SWITCH and the criteria functions (COUNTIF(S), SUMIF(S), AVERAGEIF,
MAXIFS) keep the 15-digit comparison. Observed in Excel via COM with
synthetic values.

lookup_equal now compares numbers with ==, and the lookup searches order
values with lookup_order (exact for numbers, compare otherwise).
compare_numbers and the criteria path are unchanged.

Excel 365 reads a dollar sign before accounting parentheses ($(1,234),
$ (5)) and a percent sign after them ((5)%) as negative numbers when the
text is typed, coerced by arithmetic or passed to VALUE. GridCraft gave
#VALUE! for these.

The parentheses branch no longer recurses: Excel reads only an unsigned
plain number or fraction inside, so (-5), ((5)), ($-5), and dates or
times in parentheses are now #VALUE! as in Excel (they used to give 5
or a negative serial). $5% is #VALUE! too: Excel never combines the
currency and percent signs.

EOMONTH, EDATE, WORKDAY(.INTL), NETWORKDAYS(.INTL), YEARFRAC, WEEKNUM, the
coupon, bond and T-bill functions, DISC, BIN2DEC, IM* and the other Analysis
ToolPak functions give #VALUE! in Excel 365 for a reference to more than one
cell in a value argument, in dynamic-array and legacy formulas alike, where
GridCraft lifted the range and spilled. Array constants and computed arrays
still lift, and range arguments (holidays, cash flows, schedules) and the
.INTL weekend still take ranges.

FnSpec gains a value_args mask, filled at registration from one table in
lift.rs; call_lifted turns a multi-cell reference at a value position into a
scalar #VALUE! before lifting, so EOMONTH(A1:A3,{1;2}) is a 2x1 array of
#VALUE! as in Excel.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
INDEX(A1:C3,2) returned the whole second row. Excel gives #REF! when a
reference has several rows and columns and the column argument is
omitted, so the error also carries into ranges built from it
(A1:INDEX(A1:C3,2)), position arrays (INDEX(A1:C3,{1;2})) and outer
functions. An empty column argument (INDEX(A1:C3,2,)) still gives the
row, and arrays are unchanged: INDEX({1,2;3,4},2) is the row.

Observed in Excel that a column array with one index,
INDEX({10;20;30},2), is a 1x1 array (TYPE 64), which is what calc
already returned; the new test pins it.

… overflowing the stack

The evaluator stopped at MAX_DEPTH (400) nested eval calls. A LAMBDA
call takes one of those levels but several stack frames (eval,
eval_inner, call, builtin, apply_lambda, call_lambda_values), so on the
1 MiB main thread of the Windows build
`=LET(f,LAMBDA(g,x,g(g,x)),f(f,1))` overflowed the stack before it
reached the limit, and the process ended.

eval now also stops once a formula has used 512 KiB of stack below its
first eval. Both limits answer #NUM!, the error Excel documents for too
many recursive calls, and a defined name that holds the recursion passes
that error on instead of answering #NAME?.

Fixes storytold#1662
A LAMBDA recursion answered #NUM! once the formula had used 512 KiB of
native stack, so the depth it reached depended on frame sizes. On a
Windows release build the deepest countdown was F(F,94), where 0.7.0
reached F(F,131).

The evaluator now counts the LAMBDA calls a formula has in progress, in
call_lambda_values, which direct calls, defined names, MAP, REDUCE,
SCAN, BYROW, BYCOL and MAKEARRAY all go through. The 141st call answers
#NUM!. The countdown F(F,131), the deepest that the 400-level MAX_DEPTH
allows, has 132 calls in progress and still runs.

The stack check stays as a guard. Its budget rises to 896 KiB, which
leaves 128 KiB of a 1 MiB thread for the frames above the formula.

a_recursive_lambda_stops_at_the_same_call_on_any_stack_size runs
recursions on each side of the limit on a 1 MiB and a 64 MiB thread and
expects the same results. The 1 MiB test now runs the countdown
F(F,131).

Merge Risk: High · up to 05334

The branch retains serious formula, workbook-import, security, packaging, and supported-build risks. These should be resolved before merging.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 05334

The macro resolver does not itself execute commands or gain filesystem or network access. However, a newly added range-deduplication scan can make a crafted workbook consume billions of comparisons during import despite the new resource limits.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: New array-range deduplication introduces attacker-amplified import work. Each nonempty array formula with a distinct multi-cell reference scans the retained range vector before either capacity check, without charging the membership-work budget. A worksheet containing 65,536 distinct two-cell ranges can therefore cause approximately 2.15 billion comparisons below the applicable limits. At the base, formula-bearing cells appended ranges and skipped the existing membership scan, so this is a newly expensive path, not merely an unchanged resource-exhaustion condition.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated attack surface is a crafted workbook supplied to an importer. No script consent or elevated privilege is needed beyond getting the file opened. The supported outcome is excessive computation in the importing execution context; cross-tenant impact, credential access, and code execution are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Attacker-controlled worksheet array references reach push_dynamic, whose duplicate scan grows with every retained distinct range. Two-cell ranges keep aggregate area small, and formula-bearing cells bypass the separately budgeted membership lookup. The resulting computation amplification is introduced by this PR; its wall-clock impact has not been measured.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The importer enforces decompressed-part, package, XML-element, range-count, range-area, and membership-work limits. These controls bound several resource dimensions, but the range duplicate search occurs before capacity checks and does not consume the membership-work budget.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Recorder cleanup uses document identity and generation-aware sequence marks. Inspected assertions cover nested groups, cross-document rollback, recording restart, and interruption, providing counterevidence against a general ownership or rollback regression. These assertions were not executed during this assessment.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bound range-insertion work independently of retained range count, using efficient duplicate tracking or an explicit cumulative comparison budget. Capacity checks alone would not eliminate the quadratic cost incurred while filling the vector.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the macro engine work on macro tokens that resolve to A1 references at step run time, which matches the main change in the changeset: the new resolve.rs module, the macros/mod.rs wiring, and the docs/macros.md token section. The title's 'Rehearsal:' prefix is a process label and does not describe the code change, but the remainder is specific and accurate. The changeset also includes many unrelated changes (charts, Go To, pivots, XLSX crypto, UI), which the title does not mention. The PR objectives describe this PR as a rehearsal of the macro-token branch, so the title is consistent with the stated intent. Its focus is on the primary feature rather than the full list of changes, which is acceptable.

Use the repository-wide sheet-name quoting rules.

quote_sheet omits the checks used by the formula printer for A1-like names and TRUE/FALSE. It also omits the existing R1C1-name rule. This makes macro-generated references inconsistent with other formula references.

The current parser accepts Q1!A1 as a sheet-qualified reference, so the issue is not parser rejection. Add the missing quoting checks and cover Q1, R1C1, TRUE, and FALSE with tests.

below(n) and right(n). Methods chain.

A token is written as {"$ref": "..."} anywhere, as the whole string of
a reference parameter (cell, range, target, keys ending in Cell or Range
and similar), or as {{...}} inside any string, which is how a formula
refers to its input. Other text parameters are never read as tokens, so
a cell can still hold the word Row and a chart can still be of type
column.

Every token becomes A1 text, sheet-qualified when it is on another
sheet, before the command runs, so no existing command changes. Plain A1
references in a step stay absolute. A reference that runs past the edge
of the sheet is reported apart from other mistakes, so the footprint
check can tell the two apart.
is_token looked only at the leading identifier, so on a workbook with a
sheet called Output (or Row, Column, or the name of a declared input),
"Output!A1:B2" was read as the Output token, and the step failed with
"the macro has no output anchor" or "unexpected '!A1:B2'". This hit
reference keys, $ref and {{...}} alike, including references the
recorder writes for other sheets. A base followed by '!' is now a sheet
name, and the text resolves as a plain reference.
col("...") always matched against the first row of the range, whatever
its header flag. On an input declared without a header row,
Input.col("Amount") silently picked the first column whose first data
cell read "Amount". After .data, the natural Input.data.col("Amount")
failed, because the first row was then a data row. The header row is
now carried through data, and col("...") is refused with a message when
there is none (an input without a header, a Name: base, or after any
other method).
`Name:` read a name only up to the first period, so `Name:Sales.Q1` looked up `Sales` and
treated `Q1` as a method, and a workbook name called Sales.Q1 could not be used in a macro,
alone or as `Name:Sales.Q1.cell(1,1)`.

The name now runs through periods, and the longest defined name or table that exists and ends
at a period (or the end) is used; what follows is read as methods. So `Name:Data.row` is a
name called Data.row, and `Name:Sales.offset(1,0)` still moves Sales. When no name matches,
the error names the text before the first method, and a bad method after a dotted name is
still refused. Tests cover direct resolution, reference parameters, `$ref` and `{{...}}`,
with and without a chained method.
…mulas are shown

`col("Amount")` read the header through the cell's display text, which is the formula while
Show Formulas is on, so a header such as ="Amo"&"unt" matched nothing. The header is now the
cell's value as formatted, whatever the sheet shows.

Rehearsal done; the branch is pushed for review.

Stop Action (or any rollback) put a group's edits back but left the steps recorded while the
group was open in the recording, so playing the recording back made edits the workbook no longer
had. A group remembers where the recording was when it began, and its rollback cuts the
recording back to there.

- Test: `stop_action_runs_only_on_its_own_and_is_not_recorded`, which kept the rolled-back edit
  before.
…N save does

`with_names` checked only the size of each item, so a macro built in code past the model's
limits (a name with a line break) was written to the file and dropped the next time it opened.
The xlsx save now runs `check` on every macro first.

- Test: the macro past the limits in `a_macro_built_in_code_goes_through_the_size_check_too`.

98-104: Trivial · Performance & Scalability

Over-budget pictures decode and upload again on every frame.

When eviction cannot free room, Cache::texture now returns the texture without caching it. In that state, each over-budget picture goes through decode and load_texture on every frame while it stays visible. Examples are 12 pictures of 2048 × 2048 pixels, or two pictures of 4096 × 4096 pixels. This keeps the memory budget, but it can cause a sustained CPU and GPU cost.

Consider caching the over-budget entry as soon as it leaves the screen. Alternatively, lower the decode side for pictures that do not fit. Add a one-time log::debug! so operators can see when this path is active.

Use a (dev, ino) pair as the directory identity.

m.dev().checked_mul(1 << 60) returns None whenever dev >= 16. Real device numbers almost always exceed that: Linux makedev(8, 1) is 2049 and macOS APFS volumes are about 16777220. On those systems no ID is computed, seen never gets an entry, and symlink aliases are still walked again up to MAX_DEPTH. The new protection does nothing in practice. xtask/src/stats.rs uses the same expression.

Pass noopener as a window feature, not inside the target name.

The second argument of window.open is a browsing-context name. The browser treats "_blank,noopener" as a window named _blank,noopener, not as the _blank keyword plus the noopener feature. As a result:

  • The opened page still gets window.opener back to the editor. A malicious link from an untrusted workbook can navigate the GridCraft tab to a lookalike page (reverse tabnabbing).
  • Every external link reuses that one named window instead of opening a new tab.

noopener belongs in the third argument (features).

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Draw the rest of the line as solid segments when the dash budget runs out.

When the dash budget is spent, the code returns vec![vec![pts.to_vec()]]. That makes the whole polyline one contour, which Canvas::fill fills with the even-odd rule. The function does not stroke it. A long dashed chart polyline therefore renders as a filled polygon, not as a solid line, and the dashes already in out are lost.

budget is also local to one stroke_paths call. The comment says many dashed lines share one total cap, but each Prim::Line gets 65,536 dashes. For a single long segment this is higher than the old per-segment limit of 10,000.

To fix the drawing, push the remaining segments as solid segments. The input bounds their count.

         for (a, b) in segs {
             if budget == 0 {
-                return vec![vec![pts.to_vec()]];

Keep date + AM/PM tails without a colon parseable.

The new pre-filter skips every tail that has no :. parse_time accepts an hour with only an AM/PM suffix (6 PM, 6pm): parts.len() == 1 is valid when ampm is set. Before this change, the input 10/7/2026 6 PM parsed as a date-time serial. Now the filter skips the tail 6 PM, so typed entry stores the value as text, and VALUE and arithmetic coercion give #VALUE!. The linear-time goal does not need this restriction. Accept a tail that contains : or ends in an AM/PM marker.

Update the date-time tail pre-filter to accept tails containing a colon or

Search the entity window by bytes. Do not slice it by str index.

rest.get(..ENTITY_WINDOW.min(rest.len())) returns None when byte 12 is inside a multi-byte character. In that case a valid entity is not decoded. Example: "&abcdeféx" puts é across bytes 11–12, so & stays literal. The old code fell back to the full remaining text and decoded it. Pasted cells then fail the normalized(&hc.text) == normalized(field) check, and the x:num number is not recovered. ; is ASCII, so a byte position is always a valid char boundary.

-        let semi = rest.get(..ENTITY_WINDOW.min(rest.len())).and_then(|w| w.find(';'));
+        let semi = rest.as_bytes().iter().take(ENTITY_WINDOW).position(|&b| b == b';');

Update the semicolon search around ENTITY_WINDOW to scan rest as bytes and
inspect at most the window length, avoiding UTF-8 string slicing so a multibyte

The conditional-format cap measures cell area, but memory scales with range count. This drops valid whole-column rules.

area sums RangeRef::count() (cells) and multiplies by 1 + rules. rules is the number of rules already stored on the whole sheet. A rule on a whole column such as A:A has 1,048,576 cells. At rules == 3 the area is 4,194,304, which is above MAX_COND_CELLS (4,000,000). The fourth rule on such a range is dropped, with only a warning. Whole-column and whole-row rules are common in real workbooks.

Each CondFormat clones the Vec<RangeRef>. The cost is the number of ranges, not the number of cells they cover. One A:A range costs 16 bytes.

Count ranges instead, and rename the constant to match.

The node counter includes the descendants of streamed elements. Large worksheets and shared-string tables fail to import.

kept is incremented for every non-split element when it closes. That includes the c and v children inside a row, and the t and r children inside an si. When the row or si closes, the split branch calls cb(el) and drops it. kept is never reduced. The count therefore grows with every cell and string in the part, not with the retained tree.

At roughly 500,000 numeric cells (c + v), the count passes MAX_XML_NODES (1,000,000). parse_streaming then returns IoError::Xml. read_sheet reports the sheet as damaged and keeps only the rows read so far. The shared-string table fails the same way. The doc comment on MAX_XML_NODES says streamed parts "never hold this tree", which is not what the code does.

Subtract the descendants of a split element when it is handed to the callback. The limit then applies to the live tree only, and still bounds a single huge item.

🐛 Proposed fix
                 if split.contains(&el.name.as_str()) {
+ // Its descendants were counted as they closed; the callback drops them.
+                    *kept = kept.saturating_sub(descendants(&el));
                     cb(el)?;
                 } else {

Add this helper next to finish (nesting is bounded by MAX_DEPTH):

fn descendants(e: &El) -> usize {
    e.children.iter().map(|c| 1 + descendants(c)).sum()
}

Add a test. A part with more than MAX_XML_NODES cells spread over many row elements must parse when split is ["row"].

In parse_streaming’s split-element handling, subtract the split element’s

The directory identity overflows on most systems, so the symlink-cycle guard never runs.

m.dev().checked_mul(1 << 60) returns None for any dev of 16 or more. Typical Linux and macOS device numbers are much larger. id is then None, seen is never updated, and the dedupe is skipped. Only the 10,000-directory budget stops a symlink cycle. The scan then counts the same files many times, and the stats are inflated.

Use the (dev, ino) pair as the key instead of packing it into one u64.

<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: today; Every desktop build job (macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD) also checks out craft-fonts at the `craft-fonts-ref` commit in `.github/workflows/release.yml` and builds with `CRAFT_FONTS_DIR` and `CRAFT_FONTS_REQUIRED=1`, so desktop releases embed its Japanese fonts (the web build embeds none: see `docs/development.md` › Fonts) and fail rather than ship without them. ... GitHub has no FreeBSD runners, so the `freebsd` job runs `packaging/freebsd/package.sh` in a FreeBSD 14.3 VM (`vmactions/freebsd-vm`, pinned by commit), with the same packages as the FreeBSD CI workflow (`.github/workflows/freebsd.yml`) plus `bash`. ... On macOS, `packaging/macos/import-cert.sh` decodes the `.p12` into a temporary keychain (`security create-keychain`, then `security import`, then `set-key-partition-list` so codesign can use the key without a prompt).It exports the identity's SHA-1 as `MACOS_SIGN_IDENTITY`.

# Releasing PhotoCraft

Every push to the `release` branch runs `.github/workflows/release.yml`. The workflow builds signed installers for macOS, Windows, Linux and the web, plus a FreeBSD tarball, then creates or updates a draft GitHub Release named `PhotoCraft v<version>`. Nobody sees a draft until a maintainer publishes it.

This is PhotoCraft's implementation of the shared release playbook. User-facing names say PhotoCraft. Files, binaries and ids stay lowercase (`photocraft-<version>-<platform>-<arch>.<ext>`, `ai.storyteller.photocraft`).

## In-app update checks

The native desktop app checks the public GitHub latest-release endpoint in a background thread once at launch, with no periodic checks or automatic retries. Preferences › General › Automatically Check for Updates disables the startup check; Help › Check for Updates runs one manually. Checks use a 15-second timeout and a 1 MiB response limit, need no GitHub token, and send no document or personal data. Network failures are quiet during automatic checks and visible in the manual check window. Publishing creates the `v0.2.0` tag. Versions with a pre-release suffix (`-rc.1`) are marked as pre-releases.

Pushing to `release` again before you publish rebuilds the same draft and replaces its assets. After the draft is published, the workflow refuses to touch that version again, so bump it first.

Test runs: Actions → Release → Run workflow runs the whole pipeline by hand. The optional `version` input (such as `0.2.0-rc.1`) overrides `Cargo.toml` for that run only. The jobs apply it with `cargo xtask version set` before building, so the binaries report it too. The run still needs the `release` environment, which only the `release` branch can use, so pick that branch in the dialog.

## Icons

`assets/app-icon/photocraft.svg` is the canonical icon: the owner's ArtCraft drawing of a nine-tailed kitsune, vectorised (MIT OR Apache-2.0, see `LICENSE.txt` there; palette and geometry in `README.md`). `packaging/icons.sh` regenerates the 1024 px PNG, the `.icns`, the `.ico` (packed by `cargo xtask ico`) and the hicolor PNGs from it. It needs `resvg`, plus `iconutil` on macOS. The outputs are committed, so packaging never needs those tools.

# artcraft-common-actions

Reusable GitHub Actions workflows and composite actions for Storyteller / ArtCraft desktop and web applications.

This repository unifies and eliminates duplicate CI/CD and release workflow definitions across the ArtCraft ecosystem into DRY, reusable GitHub Actions.

## Workflows Included

### 1. `release.yml`

Full multi-platform release pipeline for Craft apps:

  * macOS universal (x86_64 + aarch64 universal bundle, DMG, CLI, Developer ID codesign & notarization)
  * Windows (x64, x86, ARM64 MSI installer with WiX v5, CLI, Azure Trusted Signing)

  * Flatpak (x86_64, aarch64 bundle generation)
  * FreeBSD (FreeBSD 15.1-STABLE VM build & packaging for x86_64 and aarch64)
  * Arch Linux (x86_64, aarch64 `.pkg.tar.zst` built via `makepkg` from release tarball, named by bundle id; set `has-arch: false` to skip)
  * WebAssembly (wasm32-unknown-unknown with Trunk)
  * Linux RISC-V 64 (cross-compilation for riscv64gc-unknown-linux-gnu, producing deb, rpm, and tar.gz via SHA256-verified nfpm)
  * Draft Release (computes `SHA256SUMS.txt` and publishes/updates draft GitHub Release)

Keep the keychain until the packaging step completes.

The release workflow runs import-cert.sh and then runs package.sh in separate steps. The EXIT trap deletes the keychain before package.sh can use the MACOS_KEYCHAIN value from GITHUB_ENV. Keep the keychain after a successful import and remove the work directory only on failure.

Update the EXIT trap for WORK so it removes the work directory only when
import-cert.sh exits unsuccessfully, preserving the keychain after a successful
import for package.sh.

… workbook

A rollback took back every step recorded since its group began, so an edit recorded in another
workbook while the group was open was lost from the recording although the edit stayed. It now
takes back only the steps recorded in the group's own workbook.

- Test: the other workbook's edit in `stop_action_runs_only_on_its_own_and_is_not_recorded`.

…s own after others

A group remembered the recording's length when it began, which another workbook's rollback (or a
recording started again inside the group) made point at the wrong steps. Each kept step now has
a number, and each recording one of its own; a group remembers both, and its rollback takes back
the steps of its workbook numbered from its mark, or all of them when the recording started
inside the group.

- Test: `rollbacks_take_back_their_own_recorded_steps_in_any_order` (groups on two workbooks
  rolled back in turn, and a recording started again inside a group).
