Outside a Steam launch, Steam applies its desktop layout to Steam Input controllers (holding B opens the on-screen keyboard), so while the window has focus the runtime asks a running Steam client for a game layout via steam://forceinputappid and restores it on focus loss and every exit path. Configurable with [controller] steam_input_override and steam_input_app_id.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Steam Input layouts now switch between the app layout when its window is focused and the desktop layout when it loses focus.
    • Configure the Steam Input override and app ID in the runtime settings. The override is enabled by default, and the default app ID is 480.
    • Layout handling is skipped when disabled, when launched through Steam, or when no app window is available. On shutdown, the runtime attempts to restore the desktop layout.

Walkthrough

The runtime adds configurable Steam Input layout management. It selects app or desktop layouts from window focus events, uses platform-specific Steam URL delivery, and releases layout state during normal and fatal shutdown.

Changes: Steam Input layout management

Layer / File(s) Summary
Settings and API contract
runtime/include/runtime_config.h, runtime/include/steam_input_layout.h, runtime/tests/runtime_config_tests.cpp
Configuration parsing and accessors add the override and app ID settings. The public header declares initialization, event handling, and release functions. Tests cover parsed settings and rejection of a zero app ID.
Platform delivery and focus worker
runtime/src/steam_input_layout.cpp, runtime/src/main.cpp
Platform-specific Steam discovery and URL delivery support app and desktop layouts. A worker processes focus-driven requests and shutdown restoration. POSIX transcript-pipe descriptors are marked close-on-exec.
Runtime initialization and cleanup
runtime/src/main.cpp, runtime/include/aurora_events.h
The runtime initializes Steam Input when not headless, forwards Aurora events, and releases layout state during normal shutdown and fatal cleanup paths.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 37a0b

Mergeable with owner awareness of narrow restoration failures: a stalled opener or transient delivery failure can leave game bindings selected after focus loss or exit. Starting Steam later can also leave the layout request unsent until focus changes.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Re-send the focused Steam layout request after Steam becomes available.

The header says that while the game window has focus, a running Steam client is asked to apply the game layout. The worker sends only when desired differs from sent. A failed request still leaves sent set, and only a focus event on the tracked window changes desired. If Steam starts after a failed request while the window keeps focus, and no focus event occurs, no later request is sent. The focused-window request then stays unsent until the next focus change.

If Steam produces a focus change when it starts, the existing focus handling sends the request, and this gap does not occur. The repository does not show whether Steam does this.

Add a bounded availability check that re-sends the pending focused request once Steam is running. Keep the check bounded so it does not become a tight retry loop. The no-retry behavior at line 470 is intentional.

Add a bounded Steam-availability check in the worker path that updates
`state.sent` to `target`, so a focused request that failed before Steam was
running is sent once Steam becomes available, without creating a tight retry
loop. Preserve the existing no-retry behavior for other failures.

Add a true case for steam_input_override.

The new block checks only steam_input_override = false. A parser that always stores false for this key would still pass the block. No test in the changed file parses steam_input_override = true. Add a block that asserts std::optional<bool>{true}.

Add a separate true-value parsing case alongside the existing false-value case
in the Steam Input configuration tests. Use RuntimeConfigFile::ParseConfig and
assert that RuntimeUserConfig::steamInputOverride equals
std::optional<bool>{true}.

- Line 471: Update the focus-loss handling around state.sent = target so a
desktop-layout request that returns Handoff::None is retried a bounded number of
times while the window remains unfocused. Stop retrying after the bound and
preserve the existing behavior for other handoff results.
- Line 388: Update the unbounded helper wait in Deliver so a pending
focus-driven request does not prevent Worker from responding to newer desired
focus state; do not introduce an arbitrary timeout. Before starting a
replacement request, terminate and reap the pending helper to preserve request
ordering, and retain the existing handoff behavior when no newer request
supersedes it.
- Around line 586-600: Update the restore flow in Release() so a failed thread
start is retried until the existing releaseWait deadline, and the restore thread
retries Deliver only when it returns Handoff::None, stopping on Confirmed or
Unconfirmed. Preserve the existing bounded wait, but avoid retrying when Steam
is not running if OpenSteamUrl returns Handoff::None in that case; exit should
return without waiting for the full deadline.

@coderabbitai on the follow-up about re-sending the game layout when Steam starts after the window already has focus: leaving this out. It would need a background poll for Steam, which is a new feature beyond this change, and the next focus change applies the layout. Starting Steam normally brings its window forward anyway, which produces that focus change.

@patchzyy Understood. Detecting Steam startup and re-sending the game layout can stay outside this PR. The next focus change applies the layout.
