Lets controllers with a gyro or accelerometer trick and wheelie by flicking the controller, like shaking a Wii Remote, without leaving the GameCube layout. It is off by default and can be turned on with a sensitivity slider and test meter in the controller settings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added motion-trick controls for compatible controllers, including an enable/disable option and adjustable sensitivity.
    • Motion gestures can trigger brief directional button inputs during gameplay.
    • Controller settings show motion intensity and the direction of a recent trick when available. Controllers without usable motion sensors cannot enable the feature.
    • Motion-trick preferences are saved between sessions, with sensitivity limited to supported settings.
  • Tests
    • Added automated checks for motion detection and motion-trick configuration settings.

Walkthrough

The changes add motion-trick detection for gamepads, configurable enablement and sensitivity, controller input integration, and a settings overlay. Detected motion directions produce temporary button inputs. Tests cover detector behavior and configuration parsing.

Changes: Motion trick input

Layer / File(s) Summary
Motion-trick APIs and configuration
runtime/include/motion_trick.h, runtime/include/motion_trick_detector.h, runtime/include/runtime_config.h, runtime/tests/runtime_config_tests.cpp
New APIs describe detector samples, trick status, and configuration. Runtime configuration parses and persists enablement and sensitivity settings. Tests cover valid and out-of-range sensitivity values.
Shake detection and tests
runtime/src/motion_trick_detector.cpp, runtime/tests/motion_trick_tests.cpp, runtime/cmake/PlatformTests.cmake, .github/workflows/build.yml
ShakeDetector evaluates gyro and acceleration samples using sensitivity thresholds and cooldown conditions. Tests cover detector behavior. CMake registers the test executable, and the macOS portability-target build includes it.
Gamepad sensor and PAD integration
runtime/src/motion_trick.cpp, runtime/src/hle/input/pad.cpp
The runtime manages gamepad motion sensors and updates detection for active ports. Detected directions add temporary button pulses to PAD statuses before they are written to guest memory.
Controller settings UI
runtime/src/settings_overlay.cpp
The settings overlay displays motion availability and enablement. When motion is available and the feature is enabled, it displays sensitivity, intensity, and recent trick direction.

The feature remains off by default. Accelerometer-only controllers have detection and direction limitations, while the sensor-status discrepancy has no observed UI impact. These bounded issues warrant owner awareness and follow-up but do not establish a broad merge-blocking failure.

Explanation

The title "Add shake to trick" matches the main change. The PR adds a shake-to-trick feature: a motion detector (ShakeDetector), a MotionTrick runtime API, config options, and a settings panel for controllers with gyroscope or accelerometer sensors. The title is short and specific. It does not name the motion sensors or the off-by-default setting, but it does not need to cover every detail.

Add a gyro-only flick test.

Every current gyro sample sets hasAccel = true, so the suite does not exercise the independent gyro-only path.

⚠️ Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The checkbox is enabled when SDL reports sensor hardware, but PortHasMotion does not check whether Attach successfully enabled either sensor. It can offer a setting that cannot produce motion input.

The user can enable Shake to trick while its meter and trick input remain inactive, with no activation error displayed.

This can occur when: SDL_GamepadHasSensor returns true but enabling both reported sensors fails.

runtime/src/motion_trick.cpp-180-180: 1

180-180: Minor · Potential issue · Quick win

⚠️ Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Apply attaches and samples a controller only when its PAD status has PAD_ERR_NONE. If PADBlockInput changes that status while settings are open, the newly added live test meter cannot receive samples precisely when the user opens it.

The intensity meter remains empty or stale and flick-to-test gives no useful feedback.

This can occur when: The settings overlay is open and its input-blocking state makes PADRead return a non-success status.

runtime/src/motion_trick.cpp-205-207: 1

205-207: Minor · Potential issue · Poor tradeoff

⚠️ Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Pulse duration counts calls to Apply rather than elapsed game frames. Multiple guest PAD reads within a game frame can consume all four pulse counts before the game checks for a new press.

A detected flick may never be observed as a trick by the game.

This can occur when: The guest reads PAD status several times before its trick-handling update.

runtime/src/motion_trick.cpp-85-86: 1

85-86: Minor · Potential issue · Low value

⚠️ Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Attach records a sensor as available only if its first enable attempt succeeds, then returns early on every subsequent call for the same gamepad ID. A transient enable failure therefore has no retry path.

Motion tricks stay unavailable on that port until the device is reassigned or reconnected, despite the sensor becoming usable.

This can occur when: SDL_SetGamepadSensorEnabled fails temporarily as a controller is attached, then would succeed later.

Use linear acceleration for acceleration-only flick detection.

At sensitivity 3, {15, 9.80665, 0} produces only about 8.1 / 13 intensity and does not trigger. A comparable vertical flick exceeds the threshold and triggers Direction::Up. This prevents substantial sideways flicks from producing tricks on acceleration-only controllers.

Derive the trick direction for accelerometer-only controllers.

When an accelerometer-only controller crosses the threshold, ShakeDetector::Update returns Direction::Up regardless of flick direction. MotionTrick::Apply then injects PAD_BUTTON_UP, so sideways and downward flicks select the Up trick.

Review comment at @runtime/src/motion_trick_detector.cpp at line 73:
Update ShakeDetector::Update to derive the trick direction from the
accelerometer data when no gyroscope is available, so sideways and downward
flicks retain their detected direction instead of defaulting to Up; preserve the
existing GyroDirection path for gyro-equipped controllers.

Set sensorsUnavailable only when sensor enablement fails.

Status sets sensorsUnavailable for any controller with no gyro or accelerometer. The header defines the field as "the controller refused to turn its sensors on," so sensorless controllers report a failure that did not occur. In Attach, record only failed enablement requests and return that value from Status.

Update Attach to record whether a sensor enablement request failed, and have
Status return that recorded failure for sensorsUnavailable instead of inferring
failure from a missing gyro or accelerometer. Sensorless controllers that did
not fail an enablement request must report sensorsUnavailable as false.

Cover all six sensor axes in the bad-data test.

TestBadDataIgnored injects NaN and infinity only on gyro[0] and accel[1]. Extend the loop to every axis so a regression that drops one axis from the finite check fails the test. The current Finite helper already checks all three axes, so this is a coverage gap, not a current defect.

Add a repeated gyro-only flick case to TestGyroOnlyController.

TestGyroOnlyController builds its rest frames with AtRest(), which sets hasAccel = true. It checks only one flick. A detector that rearms only on accelerometer samples would still pass. Feed accelerometer-free rest frames and expect two Up tricks from two gyro-only flicks.

Update TestGyroOnlyController to verify rearming without accelerometer samples:
use rest frames with hasAccel set to false, feed them after each of two

Add a test that places a non-finite sample mid-shake.

TestBadDataIgnored feeds NaN and infinite samples only while the detector is armed and at rest. No test sends a non-finite sample after a trick has fired and before the shake ends. A regression that rearms the detector on non-finite input would still pass the suite. The current code does not have that regression: a non-finite sample returns before the arm logic runs. The added test guards the path against a future change.

Add a test alongside TestBadDataIgnored that fires a trick, feeds a non-finite
gyro sample before the shake ends, then continues shaking and verifies no second
trick fires. Register the test with the other test calls so this mid-shake
non-finite input path is covered.

@coderabbitai Skipping the mid-shake non-finite test nitpick: non-finite samples return before any arm logic runs, so there is no path to guard yet, and the bad-data test already covers every axis on both sensors.

@patchzyy Agreed. Non-finite samples return before the arm logic, and the existing bad-data test covers every axis on both sensors. I withdraw the request for an additional mid-shake test.

Learning: Within repository "patchzyy/Wiicompiled", only for files matching one of ["runtime/src/motion_trick.cpp"]: When reviewing MotionTrick::Apply in runtime/src/motion_trick.cpp, preserve motion detection while the settings overlay blocks game input so the test meter remains active. Check that blocked input suppresses game-input pulses, rather than requiring detection to stop. Do not flag the detector's post-overlay re-arm delay alone as a defect; this is an accepted trade-off.
