OpenCut is the open-source answer that already earned 70,000+ GitHub stars: a real timeline video editor, MIT-licensed, files never leave your device. The only catch was setup — cloning the repo, Docker, a Rust toolchain. This build fixes that. One signed installer, double-click, you're editing. OpenCut's whole point is that your files stay yours. Core editing — timeline, cuts, effects, compositing — runs entirely on your machine and never uploads your footage. That guarantee is intact here.
The AI features are the one honest exception: generating video, transcribing captions, or cloning a voice runs on cloud AI models, so the specific clip you're processing is sent to the model provider for that task, then results come back to your local timeline. It's opt-in and per-action — nothing is uploaded unless you click an AI button. Pure editing stays 100% local; you choose when AI is worth a round-trip. No blanket "we uploaded your whole project" like the thing we're all leaving behind.
Is it really free forever? Yes. The editor is MIT-licensed OpenCut — free, no watermark, no account, structurally un-paywallable. The AI features are free too; heavy users can optionally plug in their own model key, but the default free tier covers normal use.
Is it safe to install? Signed on Windows, notarized on Mac, SHA-256 checksums published, source on GitHub. It's the real OpenCut plus our AI layer — nothing hidden.
Do I lose anything vs official OpenCut? No — it's the same editor, same MIT core, just pre-built so you skip Docker and Rust, with AI features added on top.
How is this different from CapCut? No watermark, no subscription, no account, and your footage is never used to train anyone's models. Plus every Pro-gated AI feature, free.
Does my video get uploaded? Only the specific clip you run an AI action on, and only then. All ordinary editing is fully local.
Mobile? OpenCut targets web, desktop, and mobile from one project. This installer covers desktop; your projects carry over.
