Remove unused Python code #1762

Background

Running vulture on pytest identified several unused functions, classes, methods, and variables. We’re planning to deprecate pytests, but as long as they’re still around, let’s clean up the code!

FWIW: We can’t reasonably add reliable CI checks for dead Python code, since Python is dynamically executed and doesn’t provide tools that can guarantee accurate dead-code detection.
