• adhere to cf conventions ( http://cfconventions.org )
• include 1D coordinate variables:
  • time
  • lat
  • lon
  • if possible, set bounds to variables: time_bnds, lat_bnds, lon_bnds
• maintain dimension order for other variables: time, lat, lon
• equip geophysical variables with attributes
  • value_range
  • _FIllValue
