I (together with an agent) rewrote part of the verification to optimize to mse-like (i.e. additive) scores so it can be scaled: e.g. 60+ variables, 365 ref times, 144 lead times, 1M grid points.
This is a draft. Need to experiment a bit more and see how much of this is of use in general before a more concrete merge plan.
