This is a fork of Neroth/gnome-shell-extension-weather,
ported to the module system and APIs GNOME Shell has used since version 45,
and to libgweather-4 (which dropped the GWeather.LocationEntry widget the
original relied on for its "add city" dialog — replaced here with a
from-scratch location search).
Install it from extensions.gnome.org, either in your browser or from the Extension Manager app.
-
Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/mlkonrad/wetter.git
-
Copy to your GNOME extensions directory:
cp -r wetter ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/wetter@mlkonrad.github.com -
Compile the settings schema:
glib-compile-schemas ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/wetter@mlkonrad.github.com/schemas/ -
Restart GNOME Shell and enable the extension:
gnome-extensions enable wetter@mlkonrad.github.com
Open Wetter Settings from the panel dropdown (or gnome-extensions prefs wetter@mlkonrad.github.com) to add/remove locations, switch units, and
change how the panel indicator looks.
Turn on Current Location in the Locations section of settings to add a selectable entry that tracks where you are, via GeoClue, alongside any cities you've added by hand. It refreshes itself automatically as your location changes — no manual re-adding a city after a trip.
If no location has been added yet, Current Location is turned on by default; switch it off in settings to use only the cities you add. The location is detected by GeoClue at city-level accuracy (GNOME lists the request as coming from GNOME Shell, since extensions run inside it). The selected city is sent to the weather services libgweather uses — MET Norway, OpenWeatherMap and METAR airport reports — to fetch its forecast.
Wetter's interface is fully translated into 32 languages — every one of them covers all 133 strings, with nothing left untranslated:

There is no language setting. Wetter follows your system language: GNOME Shell loads the matching catalog for the session locale, so changing your language in Settings changes the extension too, after a log out and back in.
Regional variants fall back to the base language, so the list covers more
locales than it lists — de_AT and de_CH use the German translation,
pt_PT the European Portuguese one. A language with no translation here
shows the original English strings rather than failing.
Some of these started as translations inherited from the upstream extension;
the rest, and everything added since the fork, are machine-assisted and have
not been reviewed by a native speaker (the Last-Translator header of every
po/*.po file says so, Brazilian Portuguese included). Terminology is matched
to GNOME's own translations where the same term exists there, but corrections
are very welcome — a patch against po/<lang>.po, or an
issue pointing out what reads
wrong, is the easiest way to help.
Watch journalctl --user for Shell errors (search for wetter in the
stack traces).
