Owner

What broke (real app, Oct 22)

  • Every pass of the move opened its own owner session at My Cloud: the copy, the final pass, each check, the counts and the switch. Each session costs one of the Admin's one-time codes.
  • The Admin gives 10 codes a device, and 10 an account, in 10 minutes (cloud-desktop.ts, cloud-machines.ts). One uninterrupted move used about 7.
  • So a move that was killed and went on, or two computers moving close together, got 429. When that happened in the frozen final pass, the move waited an hour (final failed (Cloud request failed.)).

Fix (desktop only, no Admin change)

  • New electron/move-session.mjs: one owner session for the whole move, for as long as the app runs.
    • cloud-send's passes and check, and one-home's counts and switch, all use it.
    • A pass that closes it keeps it for the next pass.
    • It is signed out once the move is done, paused, or not this account's, and when the app closes.
    • A move that failed and waits to go again keeps its session, so the retry costs no code.
  • A 401 means My Cloud no longer knows the session (expired, revoked, or set up again). The move opens one new session and sends the request again. If the new session is refused too, it is not replaced again, so a route that always refuses costs one code at most.
  • The cost is now one code each time the app runs a move, instead of one per pass.

Tests

  • New e2e server/one-home-session.e2e.test.ts. Two computers of one account move at the same time, each with its own Cloud fixture.
    • The fixture's request hook counts and refuses owner sessions the way the Admin does (10 a device, 10 an account, in 10 minutes).
    • The laptop is killed twice, after its first pass and after its frozen final pass, as in the real app.
    • The desk's check fails once (503), it waits, and Try again finishes it.
    • Result: no code refused, 3 sessions for the laptop (one per app run), 1 for the desk (4 codes in all), and the desk's session is signed out when it is done.
    • On main it fails the way the real app did: final failed (This app could not sign in to My Cloud. Try again.), then an hourly retry.
  • New unit test electron/move-session.node-test.mjs: reuse and end, renewing once after a 401, a session that could not open is not kept, and a different Cloud gets its own session.
  • Mutation checks: 10 of 10 caught.
    • e2e (6): cloud-send ignores the shared session; one-home's counts and switch open their own; a pass's close signs it out; never signed out; signed out while the move is under way; reopened for the same Cloud.
    • unit (4): no renewal; renewal without the once-only guard; a failed open is kept; a 401 download is not cancelled.
  • Wider runs
    • node --test electron/*.node-test.mjs: 1016 pass, 3 skipped, 0 fail.
    • The move e2e suites (one-home, retry, trial key, cloud-send, move, kinds, store, connections, team move, team, team own chat): all pass except cloud-send-move.e2e › "lines My Cloud already held …". That test fails the same way on main (also noted in One home: the words a person sees during and after the move #3278).
    • tsc -b, tsc -p tsconfig.server.json and oxlint are clean. electron/main.mjs and server/index.ts are not touched.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Improved one-time Cloud moves across multiple computers, including concurrent moves and recovery after interruptions or temporary verification failures.
    • Move sessions now remain available across move passes and switch cleanly between Cloud destinations.
    • Cloud sessions are released or signed out automatically when moves finish, pause, or use a different account.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of expired sign-in sessions during moves, including a single automatic renewal and retry.

…nd computer stay within the Admin's codes

Every pass, check, count and switch of the move opened its own owner session at My Cloud, and each one costs one of
the Admin's one-time codes (10 an account, and 10 a device, in 10 minutes). One uninterrupted move used about 7, so a
move that was killed and went on, or two computers moving close together, got 429 and stalled for an hour in the
frozen pass.

The move now keeps one session (electron/move-session.mjs) for as long as the app runs: cloud-send's passes and check
and one-home's counts and switch all use it, a pass's close keeps it, and it is signed out once the move is done,
paused, or not this account's. A 401 (My Cloud no longer knows it) opens one new session and sends the request again,
once. No Admin change.

📝 Walkthrough

Move operations now share a reusable owner session across passes. The session can renew once after a 401 response and is released when the move ends or no longer has an active phase. Tests cover session lifecycle and concurrent moves across two computers.

Changes: Cloud move session lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reusable session lifecycle
electron/move-session.mjs, electron/move-session.node-test.mjs
createMoveSession retains a session by target origin and retries a request once after a 401. Tests cover reuse, cleanup, renewal, open failures, and origin changes.
OneHome session integration
electron/cloud-send-main.d.mts, electron/cloud-send-main.mjs, electron/one-home-main.d.mts, electron/one-home-main.mjs, electron/one-home.d.mts, electron/one-home.mjs
OneHome shares a move session with CloudSend. The controller releases the session when the account differs or no active move phase remains, and closing OneHome ends the session.
Concurrent move validation
server/one-home-session.e2e.test.ts
An end-to-end test runs concurrent moves across two computers with process interruptions and a verification retry. It checks pairing-code limits, session counts, and sign-out after completion.

Do not reopen the session after release.

end() clears held before it closes the session. If an in-flight move request then returns 401, using calls current(target) and opens a new session after release. During app close, the move can finish in the wait phase, which suppresses the later release, so the new session can remain held.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The wrapper cancels the 401 body even when the 401 response is returned to the caller.

The wrapper cancels response.body on every 401, before using decides whether to retry. If the session is already renewed, using returns that same response. Its body is then already cancelled. A caller that reads the error body, for example response.text() or response.json(), gets a TypeError instead of the 401 answer. The old openOwnerSession().fetch returned an unread body.

Cancel the body only when using retries.

Proposed fix
-  async function using(target, request) {
+  async function using(target, request, discard) {
     const entry = current(target);
     const answer = await request(await entry.session);
     if (answer?.status !== 401) return answer;
+    if (held === entry && entry.renewed) return answer;
+    await discard?.(answer);
     if (held === entry) {
-      if (entry.renewed) return answer;
       held = null;
       current(target, true);
     }
     return request(await current(target).session);
   }
-        fetch: (route, init) => using(target, async (session) => {
-          const response = await session.fetch(route, init);
-          if (response.status === 401) await response.body?.cancel();
-          return response;
-        }),
+        fetch: (route, init) => using(target, (session) => session.fetch(route, init), (response) => response.body?.cancel()),

The node test only checks status, so it does not catch this. Add an assertion that await response.text() works on the second 401.

Await the move-session sign-out during desktop shutdown.

When the app quits with a held move session, oneHome.close() starts moveSession.end() but does not return it. The before-quit cleanup then waits only for helper and server shutdown before calling app.quit(). The /api/auth/logout request can still be pending when the app exits, leaving the owner session active at My Cloud.
