cycle.fold~ - Wave Folding Oscillator for Max/MSP

An advanced wave folding oscillator with phase warping capabilities, featuring progressive threshold wave folding, click-free parameter transitions, and comprehensive anti-aliasing protection.

Overview

cycle.fold~ generates sine waves with real-time wave folding and phase warping, offering rich harmonic content for synthesis applications. Built using modern Max SDK patterns and optimized for professional audio production.

Features

Core Functionality

  • Clean Sine Wave Generation: High-precision phase accumulation with denormal protection
  • Wave Folding: Progressive threshold-based reflection folding with anti-aliasing protection
  • Phase Warping: Musical exponential curve-based phase distortion
  • DC Offset Removal: Always-on high-pass filter eliminates DC artifacts and prevents clicks

Advanced Processing

  • lores~ Pattern: Seamless signal/float dual input on all 3 inlets
  • Anti-Aliasing Protection: Band-limited folding prevents harsh aliasing artifacts
  • Parameter Smoothing: Click-free transitions for both signal and float inputs with adaptive smoothing
  • Real-Time Safety: Optimized for audio-rate processing and modulation

Technical Features

  • Universal Binary: Native support for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs
  • Denormal Protection: Prevents CPU spikes from denormal numbers
  • Phase Synchronization: Bang message support for phase reset
  • Professional Quality: Stable algorithms suitable for production use

Inlets

  1. Frequency (signal/float) - Oscillator frequency in Hz + bang for phase reset
  2. Fold Amount (signal/float) - Wave folding intensity (0.0-1.0)
  3. Warp Amount (signal/float) - Phase distortion (-1.0 to 1.0)

Outlets

  1. Audio Signal - Folded and warped sine wave output

Parameters

Frequency (Inlet 1)

  • Range: 0.001 - 20000.0 Hz
  • Default: 440.0 Hz
  • Type: Signal or float
  • Special: Bang message resets phase to 0

Fold Amount (Inlet 2)

  • Range: 0.0 - 1.0
  • Default: 0.0 (pure sine wave)
  • Type: Signal or float
  • Description: Progressive threshold folding (0.0=pure sine, 0.5=mid-level folding, 1.0=maximum folding)

Warp Amount (Inlet 3)

  • Range: -1.0 - 1.0
  • Default: 0.0 (no warping)
  • Type: Signal or float
  • Description: Exponential phase distortion (-1.0 = left squish, 1.0 = right squish)

Usage Examples

Basic Oscillator

[cycle.fold~ 440.]

Wave Folding

[cycle.fold~ 220. 0.5]  // 50% folding intensity

Phase Warping

[cycle.fold~ 330. 0.0 0.3]  // Right-squished waveform

Audio-Rate Modulation

[cycle.fold~ 440.]  // Modulated folding

Technical Implementation

Mathematical Algorithms

Enhanced Phase Warping:

// Musical exponential curves for expressive control
if (warp_amount > 0) {
    double curve = 1.0 + warp_amount * 3.0;  // 1-4 range
    return pow(phase, 1.0 / curve);
} else {
    double curve = 1.0 + (-warp_amount) * 3.0;
    return 1.0 - pow(1.0 - phase, 1.0 / curve);
}

Progressive Threshold Wave Folding:

// Progressive threshold: fold=0→threshold=1.0, fold=1→threshold=0.01
double threshold = 1.0 - safe_fold_amount * 0.99;

// Reflection-based folding when signal exceeds thresholds
while (output > threshold || output < -threshold) {
    if (output > threshold) {
        output = 2.0 * threshold - output;  // Reflect down
    } else if (output < -threshold) {
        output = -2.0 * threshold - output;  // Reflect up
    }
}

Click-Free Parameter Transitions:

// Adaptive smoothing: heavy for float inputs, light for signal inputs
if (x->fold_has_signal) {
    fold_amount = smooth_param(x->fold_smooth, fold_target, smooth_factor * 0.1);
} else {
    fold_amount = smooth_param(x->fold_smooth, fold_target, smooth_factor);
}

// Always apply DC blocking for consistency (prevents on/off clicks)
double output = dc_block(x, folded_wave);
