  • fixes something and does not need a WG/RFC.
  • is within the scope of WG: Cloud Hybrid
  • has approved RFC

Summary

Adds support for zero-shot classification models to the onnxruntime backend and the router. These models have no per-label
head and they read the label list as part of their input, so the labels have to travel with every request instead of coming from the model's id2label.

  1. POST /v1/classify now accepts a labels array.
  2. A new zero_shot classifier type in collection.router policies, so a routing rule can band the scores the same way it bands a regular classifier.

Zero-shot classify:

curl -X POST http://localhost:8000/api/v1/classify \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"model": "Prompt-Router-ONNX",
"input": "I want to learn about baking so that I can make a cheesecake",

ort-server dependency

Only the subprocess knows which task its model was exported for, so it owns the agreement check in both directions (sending labels to a fixed-label model, or omitting them for a zero-shot one). Lemonade validates shape only, and forwards labels.

Scope

  • This PR addresses one clear issue or change.
  • I reviewed the full diff myself before submitting.
  • I removed unrelated local changes.
  • I kept refactoring separate unless it is required for this change.

Testing

  • The code change has been locally tested.

Documentation

Breaking Changes

  • This PR introduces breaking changes.
  • This PR does not introduce breaking changes.

Known gaps

  • No UI. /v1/classify has never had a panel in the Tauri or web app, so this doesn't widen a UI surface. But RouterPipelineCanvas.tsx hardcodes its classifier type dropdown to classifier / semantic_similarity / llm, and the RouterClassifier union in customCollections.ts matches, so the builder can't create a zero_shot classifier.

Blocked on: ort-server PR shipping a release. backend_versions.json
pins onnxruntime.cpu to 0.3.7, which has no zero-shot support, that pin needs bumping before this merges, otherwise a fresh install gets a 400 on every zero-shot request.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added zero-shot classification for routing policies, scoring request text against configured labels with a classification model.
    • Classification requests can now include labels to score against, with scores returned for those labels.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid label lists and labels sent to fixed-label models return HTTP 400.
    • Zero-shot policies reject incompatible models and do not fall back to chat models.
    • Router residency conflicts are reported instead of being treated as classifier failures or default routing decisions.
  • Documentation
    • Documented zero-shot classification, label requirements, and policy configuration.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds zero-shot classification to routing policies and classify requests. It validates model types and label lists, sends labels to classification backends, and propagates router residency conflicts. Documentation covers the request and policy configuration.

Changes

Zero-shot classification and routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure zero-shot classifiers
src/cpp/resources/schemas/*, src/cpp/include/lemon/routing_policy.h, src/cpp/server/routing_policy.cpp, src/cpp/server/routing_policy_parser.cpp, docs/dev/router-policy.md, test/cpp/fake_classifier_services.h, test/cpp/test_routing_policy_parser.cpp, test/cpp/test_routing_policy_registry.cpp
The policy schema and implementation support zero_shot classifiers with a model and labels. Parsing rejects models that are not CLASSIFICATION. Tests cover configuration validation, evaluation, and unavailable services.
Run zero-shot classification
src/cpp/server/routing_classifier_services.cpp, src/cpp/server/backends/onnxruntime/onnxruntime_server.cpp, test/cpp/test_routing_classifier_services.cpp
The router service loads and checks the model, then sends the input and labels to the classify endpoint. The ONNX Runtime backend forwards labels, and tests cover score parsing and model-type handling.
Propagate router residency conflicts
src/cpp/server/routing_policy.cpp, src/cpp/server/server.cpp, test/cpp/test_routing_classifier_services.cpp
Classifier evaluation and routing rethrow router residency conflicts. Routing-policy validation returns the residency-conflict response. Tests cover propagation and ordinary backend exception handling.
Validate classify-request labels
src/cpp/server/server.cpp, test/server_classify.py, docs/api/lemonade.md
The classify endpoint rejects malformed label lists with HTTP 400. Tests cover invalid labels and labels sent to a fixed-label model. The API documentation describes zero-shot requests and responses.

Loading

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 9b35e

Fresh installs cannot reliably use the new zero-shot classification feature, and editing a zero-shot router in the visual builder can change its routing behavior. Resolve these issues before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9b35e

Existing request and loading controls constrain the new classification flow, and resource conflicts are now surfaced explicitly. The main risk is compatibility: the default installed dependency may ignore requested labels, producing misleading results or fallback routing.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: The newly accepted per-request label contract is not aligned with the built-in backend described by prior source inspections. On that installation, labels are ignored: routing treats mismatched scores as classifier failure, while direct classification can return fixed labels successfully. Classification-dependent routing therefore relies on its configured error and fallback destinations rather than the requested scoring semantics. Sensitive-data misrouting was not established, but failure containment is deployment-dependent.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly supported exposure is classification processing on the accessed server and requests using registered zero-shot routing policies. Request input can influence policy-selected routing, but the new callback receives its model and label vocabulary from policy configuration rather than granting the request a new backend destination.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Label-shape validation protects the public request boundary, capability checking prevents chat coercion, and routing checks score-map identity. This is not universally fail-closed behavior: ordinary classifier failures follow configured on_error and default routing, while the public response envelope checks only that labels is an object.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Backend forwarding honors the existing cancellation context and scopes backend-request accounting. Inference acquisition and eviction share synchronized state, and response or exception paths release inference ownership. These are static source controls, not evidence of a successful concurrent or interrupted production zero-shot run.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Require demonstrated per-request-label capability before activating a zero-shot policy, validate response label identity at the public classify boundary, and choose deliberately safe error destinations when classification governs sensitive-data routing.

Preserve zero_shot when editing a router in the builder.

When a registered router with a zero_shot classifier is opened from ModelManager’s options button and saved, routingToRouterCollectionDraft maps its type to classifier. The save path then serializes type: "classifier", so the server constructs ModelClassifier instead of ZeroShotClassifier; routing can change. The labels are copied and serialized, not omitted. Add zero_shot to the builder type and edit controls, preserve it during hydration, and serialize it as zero_shot with its model and labels.
