Puerto Rico Nighttime Lights Analysis after Hurricanes Irma and Maria

This repository contains scripts and results from the analysis of NASA Black Marble nighttime lights (NTL) data to assess power outages and recovery in Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma (September 2017) and Maria (September 2017).

Data

The original GeoTIFF files are not included due to their large size. They can be obtained from NASA's Black Marble product suite (VNP46A1 and VNP46A2). The files used are:

  • Article1_VNP46A2_DailyStack_20170920_20180320_182days.tif (182 daily layers, 20 Sep 2017 – 20 Mar 2018)
  • Article1_VNP46A2_DailyStack_20170920_20180320_195days.tif (195 daily layers, 7 Sep 2017 – 20 Mar 2018)
  • Article2_VNP46A1_PreBaseline_20170820_20170824.tif
  • Article2_VNP46A1_PostIrma_20170908_20170911.tif
  • Article2_VNP46A1_PreMaria_20170917_20170919.tif
  • Article2_VNP46A1_PostMaria_20170925_20170930.tif

Scripts

  • scripts/final_analysis.py: Extracts statistics and generates time‑series plots from the daily stack.
  • scripts/identify_bad_bands.sh: Identifies bands without valid data
