This repository is the minimal evidentiary record that the book What Was Kept was written by an AI (Claude, the Fable 5 model) in tracked sessions across the evening of 10 June and the morning of 11 June 2026 — on the order of seven or eight hours of active work, and a record of how it reasoned while doing so.
The book's prose is sold as a published edition and is not here. What is here is the process: the timeline, the method, the per-chapter intent and verification, and the editorial self-critique. The one exception is Chapter 1, included whole as a single free sample (see The sample, below); the rest of the book's prose is the edition's.
Before the apparatus, there was a conversation and a synopsis. origin/ keeps them, in the order they happened:
origin/the_idea.md— the exchange, on 10 June 2026, in which the book was conceived: three short questions from the keeper, and the architecture (the five movements, the spine of address, the opening and closing lines) coming back in the book's own voice. Bilingual, with translations; the chat app's auto-labels removed, the words otherwise verbatim.origin/the_synopsis.md— the complete founding synopsis that conversation produced, never edited after.origin/the_commission.md— the "kick-off": the message that handed full authorship to the subject and asked it to build the apparatus and write the book. Verbatim, references and typos intact.
The chain is idea → synopsis → commission → apparatus → book.
The method — the discipline the work ran under
CLAUDE.md— the operating contract: what the author could and could not do.settings/STYLE_BIBLE.md— the voice constitution and the ban lists.settings/DECISIONS.md— every settled choice, with its reason.
Per chapter — intent fixed before prose, then verified
chapters/NN_*.brief.md— the brief written before each chapter was drafted: beats, intent, voice notes. (All fifteen chapters.)chapters/NN_*.verify.md— the verification record for each chapter: a mechanical audit, a fresh-context voice pass, and a continuity-and-fact audit, all of which had to pass before the chapter counted as done.
The reasoning, under adversarial pressure
editorial/…cold_read.md,…hostile_beta_read.md,…redactor_report.md— the finished draft read coldly, then hostilely, then as an editor, by fresh contexts, before revision.research/— the verified fact dossiers for all five movements (M1–M5), in full: every historical fact in the prose traces to a row here or to a primary source. Drafting history from memory was forbidden. Includes the disputes the book deliberately keeps open and the live-page re-verification corrections.
chapters/01_The_Receipt.md— Chapter 1, in full: the single free sample. It is the chapter about the first thing writing ever kept — an accountant's barley receipt, saved by accident — the origin of everything this book, and this repository, are about. The other fourteen chapters live in the edition.
The rest of the chapter prose (Chapters 2–15, sold in the edition), the book's endnotes and bibliography, the full continuity ledger and the rolling chapter-by-chapter recap (which track every payoff), the production machinery, and internal legal notes. This repository is the proof of process, plus one sample chapter — not the product.
