PIL has had crop/paste APIs for some time, though I am unsure when exactly they were introduced. With this optimization, I can run all the basic renders in just a few seconds. Unfortunately, I can't seem to reproduce your exact PNG outputs due to font issues, so I've backported my optimization in case it helps anyone else.
