⚡ Bolt: Optimize SongEditor re-renders

💡 What:

  • Refactored PromptLibraryDialog to be a memoized component.
  • Introduced static NO_OP and EMPTY_ARRAY constants in SongEditor.tsx to pass stable references to PromptLibraryDialog and AudioPlayer.

🎯 Why:

  • The SongEditor component re-renders frequently (approx 60fps or on every time update) due to the audio playback progress.
  • These re-renders were causing unnecessary reconciliation of children like PromptLibraryDialog and RhymePanel because inline functions and arrays were creating new references on every render.

📊 Impact:

  • Reduces main thread work during playback by preventing reconciliation of the prompt library dialog and rhyme panel props.
  • Improves UI responsiveness during high-frequency updates.

🔬 Measurement:

  • Verified with pnpm test (all pass).
  • Visual verification: Application behavior remains unchanged, but internal render counts for these sub-components should decrease during playback.

- Memoize `PromptLibraryDialog` to prevent re-renders on parent state changes.
- Use static `NO_OP` and `EMPTY_ARRAY` constants for stable prop references in `SongEditor`.
- Reduces unnecessary reconciliation of dialog and rhyme panel during audio playback.

Summary of Changes

Hello, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request focuses on performance optimization within the SongEditor component. By memoizing a frequently used dialog and ensuring stable prop references for its children, it aims to significantly reduce unnecessary re-renders that occur during audio playback. This change is designed to decrease main thread workload and enhance the overall responsiveness of the user interface.

Highlights

  • Memoized PromptLibraryDialog: The PromptLibraryDialog component has been wrapped with memo to prevent unnecessary re-renders when its props do not change.
  • Stable References in SongEditor: Static NO_OP and EMPTY_ARRAY constants were introduced in SongEditor.tsx to provide stable references for props passed to PromptLibraryDialog and RhymePanel, further optimizing their rendering.
Changelog
  • src/components/PromptLibraryDialog.tsx
    • Imported the memo higher-order component from React.
    • Wrapped the PromptLibraryDialog functional component with memo to optimize its rendering behavior.
  • src/components/SongEditor.tsx
    • Added NO_OP and EMPTY_ARRAY static constants to provide stable function and array references.
    • Replaced inline arrow functions for onAddPrompt, onUpdatePrompt, and onDeletePrompt with the NO_OP constant when passing props to PromptLibraryDialog.
    • Replaced inline empty array literals with the EMPTY_ARRAY constant for rhymes and related props passed to the RhymePanel.
    • Removed unused imports for toast and cn.

Code Review

This pull request effectively optimizes the SongEditor component by preventing unnecessary re-renders of its children. Memoizing PromptLibraryDialog and introducing stable constants like NO_OP and EMPTY_ARRAY are excellent strategies for improving performance in React applications. The changes are clean and well-targeted. I have one suggestion regarding the EMPTY_ARRAY constant to improve code robustness.

// Static constants to prevent re-renders in memoized children
const NO_OP = () => {};
const EMPTY_ARRAY: string[] = [];

To improve robustness and prevent potential bugs from accidental mutations, it's a good practice to make this shared array immutable. You can do this by defining it as const EMPTY_ARRAY: readonly string[] = [];.

This change would require updating the rhymes and related props in the AudioPlayer and RhymePanel components to accept a readonly string[]. This is a recommended practice for props that are not intended to be mutated by child components, as it strengthens the component's contract.

Consider applying this change for better code safety.
