hi @ichi-h -- rand 0.9 came out, I verified tests pass, and I believe this is ready to merge, I did bump the minor version to 0.5.0 because rand 0.9 changes the API for random number generation from "gen" to "random" |

various minor tinkering to fix deprecation warnings regarding the new
genkeywordfixed all the clippy lint issues i found (just allowed most of them)
should be no change to implementation details, tests passing on my machine
