The app launcher section added HyprTile 3 days ago without any comment #1311. HyprTile is distributed as a binary and only as a binary. It has no accountable entity behind it. It should not be recommended.

I plan to open source this software as I seek for a way to get it included in arch AUR as well. Give me some days to think about in. I would like to make the base app free and some more sophisticated themes and Addons could be closed software. At this early stage I am just a bit frightened about what would happen if anybody would just take my code and build this himself to make money out of it.

You are free to unpack my binary de-upx it
https://github.com/upx/upx if you want, you are free to check the whole binary for anything suspicious. You won't find something because it has all it needs in it. No telemetry, no http requests to any services.

At its core it is just a bit c++ code, linking to some qt classes and a bit of html for the dashboard / app grid that communicate so things work. The reason why it is packed so extreme is because I really like it in the style of the old demoscene days. Do much with less size.

I didn't know that open source is a must here. If I made an error with that decision, then I apologize. Please give me some days and I will think about it - if it is no risk to me, I will open source it till the weekend.

As a rule of thumb, you may assume that any OSS licensed under a free license will not recommend nor depend on non-free software without explicit warning and a good reason.

Ok, I am no man of long discussions. I just was on my way home from work and thought about it. And because I LOVE open source and always wanted to give something back... it is no hard decision for me to open source it. It will be a better way to see if people like it. But do I have to open a github repo or is it enough to put the code and build instructions on my website?

For I do not like github too much.
What would you guys recommend?

So it was a litte work, but to prove that I mean it:
This software is no freeware anymore - license is just switched to LGPL / open source.
Version 0.12 is out now. Now no "blob only" anymore, anybody is free to build it by himself.

You can use other forges if you dislike GitHub specifically, e.g. GitLab, Codeberg, Forgejo, or even self-hosted. In any case, a git repo would boost confidence in the open-source promise.

I use a personal git locally. At this time I just put the source on the homepage with simple install instructions. Next step is bringing it into arch AUR. That should be the most easy solution for archers if they decide to self build it. Then, later in the future some day it could be in extra and maybe other distro directly. But that's not my main priority atm. Now it is time to make the launcher better in terms of usability and features. I hope to create a software that needs no manpage to survive :-)

Having a public repo would incentivize other people to contribute, taking some burden off your shoulders.
