Overview

This repository explores the integration of blockchain infrastructure with cloud-based Kubernetes environments. The focus is on creating a stateful Avalanche Node for hosting and interacting with the Avalanche blockchain and a dedicated Avalanche CLI environment for managing Avalanche Subnets and related operations.

Why Blockchain in GitOps-Lab?

The inclusion of Avalanche infrastructure in the GitOps-Lab repository enables:

  • Stateful Blockchain Operations:
    • Deploying a reliable Avalanche Node to participate in the Avalanche network.
  • Administrative Flexibility:
    • Creating a dedicated Avalanche CLI environment for manual operations, such as Subnet creation and network management.
  • Infrastructure Automation:
    • Ensuring consistent deployment and management of blockchain components using GitOps principles.

Planned Setup

1. Stateful Avalanche Node

The Avalanche Node will be deployed as a StatefulSet in the Kubernetes cluster to ensure data persistence and network stability.

  • Features:

    • Persistent storage for blockchain data using Kubernetes Persistent Volumes (PVs).
    • Stable network identity for seamless participation in the Avalanche network.
    • High availability to ensure consistent operation in the blockchain ecosystem.
  • Use Cases:

    • Validating transactions on the Avalanche network.
    • Serving as the foundation for deploying and managing custom Subnets.

2. Avalanche CLI Environment

A dedicated Kubernetes pod will host the Avalanche CLI, providing a stable environment for managing Subnets and performing administrative tasks.

  • Features:

    • Accessible via SSH for manual operations.
    • Preconfigured with necessary tools and permissions to interact with the Avalanche network.
    • Ensures a consistent and isolated workspace for Subnet management.
  • Use Cases:

    • Creating, configuring, and managing Avalanche Subnets.
    • Running Avalanche network operations directly within the Kubernetes cluster.

Benefits of Kubernetes Integration

  1. Stateful Workloads:
    • Kubernetes StatefulSets provide a robust way to manage blockchain nodes with persistent storage and stable identities.
  2. Flexibility and Automation:
    • The Avalanche CLI environment simplifies Subnet management and reduces setup overhead.
  3. Operational Consistency:
    • All deployments are managed using GitOps principles, ensuring traceability and reproducibility.

Implementation Approach

Avalanche Node

The Avalanche Node will be deployed using a Kubernetes StatefulSet:

  • Storage:
    • Persistent Volumes (PVs) will store blockchain data to prevent data loss during restarts.
  • Networking:
    • Each node will have a stable network identity for consistent operation in the Avalanche ecosystem.

Avalanche CLI Environment

The Avalanche CLI environment will be a single pod configured with:

  • Persistent Storage:
    • Ensures CLI configurations and logs are retained across sessions.
  • SSH Access:
    • Provides a secure method for interacting with the CLI environment.
  • Cluster Integration:
    • Full access to Kubernetes resources for advanced operations.
