Scope I plan to translate
Core UI (frontend/src/lib/i18n/locales/ja.json), the contacts extension, and the calendar extension, following docs/LANGUAGE.md against the latest release branch v0.3.6-dev.
Additional Notes
Filing this to claim the language before starting, per the translation contribution guide. No existing ja issue was found in the tracker. I will submit a PR with the checklist completed once the translation is ready.

@theluckystrike Should have checked before I merged but not a big deal since we haven't released yet but is there a shorter way to translate about so it doesn't overflow the layout?

Thanks for catching that, and sorry I missed it. The tab now says 情報, which means "info" (2 characters instead of 7).

@hkdb, glad the shorter About tab made it in before the release. When new strings land in the English locale ahead of it, I'll send the matching ja.json keys so Japanese stays complete.
