RAVA Sync is an interactive device that combines a RAVA true random number generator (TRNG) with LED lights, a buzzer, and a translucent acrylic enclosure to create a real-time visual and auditory representation of random events.
The LEDs are enclosed in a translucent acrylic casing, which diffuses and smooths the light, producing a more uniform and ambient illumination rather than distinct points of light.
The device continuously generates random data and, in real time, evaluates the statistical rarity of outcomes within a recent time window. This rarity is translated into the intensity of the light: the rarer the random outcome, the more intense the light becomes.
When a predefined rarity threshold is reached, RAVA Sync triggers a distinctive pattern of changing colors accompanied by a sound, signaling the occurrence of a rare random event.
The rarity threshold can be configured according to the average expected number of events per hour. For example, a threshold may be set so that, statistically, an event is expected to occur six times per hour, or once every 10 minutes.
The word average is important: the actual occurrence times are unpredictable. Events may occur close together, or there may be a long interval between them. The threshold defines the statistical expectation over many events, not a fixed schedule.
RAVA Sync was designed as a tool for ludic and non-scientific exploration of synchronicity.
Rather than counting how many rare events occur, the device provides an opportunity to observe what is happening at the precise moment a rare random event is triggered.
For example:
What was being said, thought, or observed when the device suddenly indicated a rare event?
The user can simply go about an activity while RAVA Sync runs in the background and pay attention when an event occurs. The intention is to create a playful way of exploring whether seemingly meaningful coincidences appear around unpredictable random events.
RAVA Sync does not determine whether a coincidence is meaningful or whether synchronicity has occurred. It provides a random, time-localized event that can be used as a reference point for personal observation and exploration.
RAVA Sync consists of:
- RAVA circuit - generates physical random data
- LED lights - provide a continuous visual representation of statistical rarity
- Translucent acrylic casing - diffuses and smooths the LED light, creating a more uniform and ambient illumination
- Buzzer - provides an auditory indication when a rare event is detected; it can be turned on or off using a dedicated switch
- Firmware - controls the device, processes the random data, calculates the rarity of outcomes, and generates the corresponding light and sound patterns
The current version can be found at: RAVA8 Firmware v2.0.0
