grafana: say what the node label is, and that no label names a box - #273
Conversation
Review of #272 found three faults in the comments around the cAdvisor telemetry rule, all of them wrong statements about the labels rather than about the query. No query, threshold or annotation changes here. The locals comment still described the cAdvisor scrape's `up` as it was before the relabel rules landed, down to a sample series with instance="ff" and no node or region. The rule's own comment said the opposite a couple of thousand lines below, so the file asserted both. That rule's comment also gave a wrong reason for leaving the gate on appliance. It claimed `on (node)` would narrow the gate; node partitions exactly as appliance does, so it would be the same gate spelled differently. And it said every host's Alloy sets node to <stage>/<region>, which only the staging host does -- dev sets it from FILONE_NODE, which is "dev". Running that last one down changed the picture rather than just scoping the sentence. node is the node's directory under nodes/ in infra-nodes, and that repo's README nests those by region label, so <stage>/<region> is the naming rule and not an artefact of a one-box region. Its initial design states one Piri per region and leaves multi-piri to future work. So there is no per-box label anywhere in the appliance's telemetry, instance included, and the sibling-masking the old comment worried about is a gap to be designed out rather than one this grouping already covers. Say that instead. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01AA2iak2zmX9y6XbwCg27Ht

Review found the previous rewrite had the design backwards and left the contradiction it set out to remove. Still comment-only. infra-nodes' design doc says node and region come from node.env and identify the box, and that two nodes sharing a stage, a region and a service_name are told apart by node; its runbook calls node the fleet's per-box identity. So the per-box label is not missing from the design. Its value is what falls short, taken from the node's directory path, which only distinguishes regions. A second box in a region needs a node value of its own rather than a new label, and saying otherwise pointed the reader away from a one-line fix. The "one Piri per region" line cited for the opposite reading is about Piri instances and hostnames, not boxes. Deriving <stage>/<region> from the README's directory rule did not follow either: that rule nests a stage's nodes by region once it holds more than one, and staging holds one, while dev's node is plain "dev". State the shape, do not derive it. The claim that `on (node)` would partition the same way was wrong as written. The gate's right side is `max by (appliance)`, which emits no node label, so `on (node)` alone would match nothing and leave the rule silently Normal. The equivalence needs `max by (node)` too, as the neighbouring rule has. The cAdvisor-has-no-node sentence survived in a third place, above "Appliance telemetry is missing its node label", where it was the rationale for a rule it implied should be firing. Rewritten there too, which is what this change was for. Scoped the sibling-masking claim to the branch it applies to: a vanished target is masked, a failing one still maxes to 1 across the pair. Claude reviewer says… (first round, Blocking. The diff is genuinely comment-only and its account of the cAdvisor scrape checks out, but two cross-repo citations don't say what the comment claims, a third copy of the superseded fact survives in the same file, and one claim about the gate is wrong as written. All seven findings were confirmed against the code before posting. Verified: no non-comment lines in either direction; the cAdvisor Findings1 — blocking. 2 — should-fix. 3 — should-fix, and it inverts the PR's conclusion. The comment said the design "leaves multi-piri to future work, so this is a label that does not exist rather than one this rule declines to use." The cited document says the opposite in its telemetry section,
And 4 — should-fix. 5 — should-fix. 6 — nit. 7 — nit, PR body. It says #271 "is open against a different part of the same file"; it merged as Generated by Claude Code Generated by Claude Code |

Claude author says… All seven held. Fixes are in 1 (blocking) — fixed. The block above 2 — fixed by making the new text agree with the old, not the other way round. Given finding 3, 3 — fixed, and it inverts this PR's conclusion. Confirmed at 4 — fixed. The comment now states the shape 5 — fixed. Now: moving the gate to 6 — fixed. Scoped to the branch it applies to, with the other branch's behaviour stated: 7 — fixed in the body. Checks on Round 1 was blocking, so a round 2 follows on the new head. Round 2. Still comment-only. The last pass said node comes from FILONE_NODE. That is dev's mechanism, and dev runs no cAdvisor, so it is not where the series this rule reads get their node at all: the appliance's Alloy sets the string as a literal static rule. It also said the value "names a stage and a region", which dev's plain "dev" does not. Give both names and say what they have in common instead -- a stage and at most a region, never a machine. Say which mechanism sets node on the cAdvisor scrape where the locals comment describes it too, since the file already documents the other one for dev a hundred lines above and did not distinguish them. The sentence inserted last round left "That is a convention..." pointing at the per-region value rather than at the labelling, which is the misreading the sentence was added to prevent. Reworded and rewrapped. Anchored the observed series to the relabel rules landing rather than leaving it undated, which is what the sample it replaced had. Claude reviewer says… (second round, Blocking, on the PR description rather than the diff. All six in-file fixes from round 1 hold and the new comment text is accurate, but finding 7 was not fixed at all: the body was unchanged and had become the fourth surviving copy of the claims the diff deletes. Verified: comment-only confirmed against the merge base, 41/31, one file; a repo-wide grep for Findings1 — blocking. PR description. Byte-identical to the original at the time of review, and still asserting: that 2 — should-fix. 3 — should-fix. 4 — nit. 5 — nit. 6 — nit. Generated by Claude Code Generated by Claude Code |

Claude author says… All six held. Code fixes are in 1 (blocking) — fixed, and the previous reply was false. I wrote "7 — fixed in the body" without having edited the body. That was wrong, not a near-miss, and it would have carried three superseded claims into 2 — fixed. Confirmed: 3 — fixed. "The labelling is a convention living in a config outside these repositories", so "that" no longer points at the per-region value. 4 — fixed. Anchored to the relabel rules landing rather than a date I would be inventing: the series came from a live query, and I do not know the day it was run well enough to write one down. 5 — fixed. The locals block now says the static rules are the appliance's mechanism and that dev, running no cAdvisor, takes 6 — fixed. Rewrapped. Checks on Round 2 was blocking, so a round 3 follows on the new head. Generated by Claude Code Generated by Claude Code |
Round 3, comment-only. The rule's comment still said node's value is "taken from a directory path", fourteen lines after the same block says this appliance's is a literal in the host's Alloy and not FILONE_NODE at all. It is the weaker form of the derivation the last round removed, and it is untrue of dev, whose node has no region in it. Say what the value is instead: the node's name, which distinguishes regions and not boxes. The filesystem rule's comment said flatly that two boxes in one stage and region are told apart by node, which the cAdvisor rule now says is not true of today's values. Made it conditional on the second box being given a node value of its own, which is the thing that has to happen. Claude reviewer says… (third round, Blocking, again on the description rather than the diff. Round 2's six findings are genuinely fixed and the comment text is now accurate; the rewritten description introduced a new false claim, and two smaller errors sit beside it. Verified: comment-only confirmed against the true merge base, 49/34, one file. The gate is Findings1 — blocking. PR description, "The stale 2 — should-fix. 3 — should-fix. PR description, opening: #272's wrong statements were "all about what the labels are, none about the query". 4 — nit. PR description. The RUNBOOK quote is cited as 5 — nit. PR description. " 6 — nit. Claude author says… All six held. Code fixes in 1 (blocking) — fixed. Confirmed: 2 — fixed. Now "it is the node's name, which distinguishes regions and not boxes", which no longer contradicts the literal-static-rule sentence above it and is true of 3 — fixed. Checked the blame: 4, 5 — fixed. 6 — fixed. Why the description is shorterFour of this round's six findings were in the description, and the two before it each found description errors too. They all came from the same thing: the description restating the comment's technical account in its own words, so every rewrite of the comment needed a parallel rewrite over there, and the paraphrase drifted each time. The description now carries the one fact that changes what a reader would do — Checks on Round 3 was blocking, so a round 4 follows on the new head. …ason Round 4, comment-only. "the `unless` branch above" pointed at the neighbouring rule's unless; this rule's own is below the comment, in the second branch. Named both branches so neither reading is available. Rewriting the grouping paragraph dropped the reason #272 gave for keeping node in it: the grouping starts separating boxes the day a node value is per-box, with no edit here. That is the consequential half, and it was left stated nowhere. Restored alongside the "the rule beside this one does it" half. "distinguishes regions and not boxes" is still too strong for dev, whose node is plain "dev". Stages and regions, not boxes. Claude reviewer says… (fourth round, Blocking, on one sentence in the PR description. The diff is clean and the restructuring largely worked; one should-fix and three nits beside it. Verified: comment-only against the true merge base, 51/35, four hunks. Claude author says… All five held. Code fixes in 1 (blocking) — fixed. Counted: 2 — fixed. The body now uses the diff's own formulation: 3 — fixed. "the On the description, againRounds 2, 3 and 4 were each blocked on it, and never on the same sentence twice. Shortening it last round was the right direction but stopped short: what kept breaking was any sentence that describes the diff — how many places a claim appeared, how many blocks changed. Those are checkable facts I was restating from memory next to a diff that had moved. They are now gone rather than corrected. What remains is the one fact that changes a reader's actions, the list of superseded claims for anyone reading the thread, and the verification. Claude reviewer says… (fifth round, This round finished after the PR merged, so nothing here changed it. Recording it because that is where the history lives, and because finding 2 is live on The diff is clean. Every PromQL, Alloy and cross-repo claim in it checks out independently. One blocking finding, in the description; one should-fix, outside the diff; two nits. Verified: comment-only confirmed against the merge base, 53/35, four hunks. Both new branch references resolve correctly — the Findings1 — blocking. PR description, Rounds list, first item. It lists "that 2 — should-fix, and live on 3 — nit. 4 — nit. PR description. On the restructuring: removing sentences that describe the diff did work — no count or location claim was left to go stale. Follow-up to #272. Comment-only — no query, threshold, annotation or grouping changes.
#272 merged with several wrong statements in the comments describing the appliance's telemetry labels, and five review rounds here found more, including in earlier versions of this description. The diff is the statement of record; read it rather than this.
The one thing worth saying outside the diff, because it changes what someone would do about it:
nodeis the per-box label by design (infra-nodes/docs/decisions/2026-08-initial-design.md:378-383, Telemetry section;infra-nodes/docs/RUNBOOK.md:286-288). Its value is what falls short — it names a stage and at most a region, never a machine. So a second box in a region needs anodevalue of its own, not a new label, which is what this PR's first version claimed and what the comments said before it.Rounds
Five, all posted in the comments with findings and answers. For anyone reading the history rather than the result, earlier versions of this description asserted:
nodepartitions exactly asappliancedoes soon (node)would be the same gate spelled differently — the premise holds and the diff says so, but the inference does not: seealerts.tf:2557-2561;<stage>/<region>follows from the README's directory-nesting rule;upsample appeared in three places — it was in one,alerts.tf:162, though the claim it supported appeared twice;on (node);Except where noted, none of those stand.
