Supersedes #362 (taken over from moust4ki at 3e95193). The lot's code and tests are those Fable approved on #362 (ext/bybifok-fable-review-10, last at 3e951937); this PR adds a merge of the current dev-swift (HFR-PROTOCOL §6c subsection moved last).
Problem. LOT-062 kept other clients' numbers byte for byte with a workaround. Every number token was rewritten into a string "<U+E000 U+E001><lexeme>" before JSONDecoder, then unboxed after JSONEncoder (JSONNumberBox). A real string starting with those two characters came back as a number.
Cause.JSONDecoder and JSONEncoder only know Int64 and Double.
Change (spec docs/lots/LOT-073-mpstorage-json-tokenizer.md). All new types are internal to HFRModels/MPStorage:
JSONTokenizer reads the text into a JSONValue and keeps every number's lexeme. Its grammar is Foundation's JSONDecoder's, checked case by case against it:
RFC 8259, plus a leading byte order mark and trailing commas;
the first duplicate key is kept;
512 levels deep are read, 513 refused;
an unpaired surrogate still throws unpairedSurrogate(byteOffset:).
JSONTreeDecoder and JSONTreeEncoder convert the models as JSONDecoder and JSONEncoder do (1.0 and 1e2 decode as Int, a non-finite double is refused). A JSONValue is read and written whole, so the unmodelled parts keep their lexemes.
JSONWriter writes JSONEncoder's exact bytes (.sortedKeys, .withoutEscapingSlashes: UTF-8 key order, the same escapes), and numbers as their lexeme.
MPStorageCodec uses them. The 64 KiB cap, the non-BMP guard and its path, and noWritableEntry are unchanged. The lenient readers read the number's lexeme with the rules the boxed path had.
Removed: JSONNumberBox and its private-use marker. Public API of JSONValue, JSONNumber and MPStorageCodec: unchanged.
Tests: every existing MPStorage test is unchanged and green. R60a's document is written back byte for byte as JSONEncoder wrote it. The writer equals JSONEncoder on every control character, on tricky keys and on a nested document. 39 grammar cases and 170 conversions agree with JSONDecoder. The old-marker string stays a string, which fails with LOT-062's boxing. 15 mutations are each caught.
No CHANGELOG-LEGACY row (no legacy behaviour changes). HFR-PROTOCOL §6c ### LOT-073 (last). The LOT-062 spec's boxing sentence is updated.
Local check at the head, on Linux (Swift 6.2.4): swift build --build-tests and swift test --package-path Packages/HFRKit (1 494 tests) pass; check-lot-deps.py 0 violations; markdownlint 0 errors.
JSONValue is a public HFRModels type whose decoding path changes (not its API). Cross-contributor review: waived by the maintainer (francoisgn, 2026-11-05) in favour of the adversarial Fable sub-agent review on the exact head.
JSONTokenizer reads the text into a JSONValue with every number's exact
text; JSONTreeDecoder and JSONTreeEncoder convert the models as
JSONDecoder and JSONEncoder do; JSONWriter writes JSONEncoder's bytes
(keys by UTF-8 order, same escapes), numbers as their lexeme. The grammar
is JSONDecoder's (BOM and trailing commas accepted, first duplicate key
kept, 512 levels). JSONNumberBox and its private-use marker are gone; a
string that started with the marker now stays a string. R60a is written
back byte for byte as before. Public API unchanged.

CI's SwiftLint 0.65 `optional_data_string_conversion`: the tokenizer, the
writer and two tests now use the failable `String(validating:as:)`, as
TextDecoding and ObfuscatedURL do; the tokenizer throws on invalid UTF-8
(never met: its bytes come from a Swift string).

Fable's verdict on 81f4290 (its High was already fixed by 1fe51c9):
- JSONWriter builds the String directly, scalar by scalar: no conversion
from bytes, so no silent empty text;
- a floating-point value that rounds a non-zero number to zero is
refused, as JSONDecoder does; an integer still decodes `1e-400` as 0,
as JSONDecoder does;
- `null` is `valueNotFound` (`typeMismatch` for Bool), as JSONDecoder;
the parity test now compares the kind of error too, 21 samples;
- a nested value that encodes nothing is `{}`, tested against JSONEncoder;
- maximumDepth's comment names the thread-stack bound.

HFR-PROTOCOL §6c: LOT-097, LOT-050, LOT-058 and LOT-049 kept, LOT-073
last. No CHANGELOG-LEGACY row in this lot.

The MPStorage codec replaces number-string boxing with a JSON tokenizer, tree decoder, tree encoder, and writer. The changes preserve number lexemes during parsing and writing, update lenient model-field conversions, and add tests and protocol documentation.
The tokenizer parses JSON text into a tree and retains number lexemes. The tree decoder converts values into models. The codec uses this path instead of number boxing and JSONDecoder; tests cover parsing, decoding, errors, and numeric model fields.
Encode and write JSON trees Packages/HFRKit/Sources/HFRModels/MPStorage/JSONTreeNode.swift, Packages/HFRKit/Sources/HFRModels/MPStorage/JSONTreeEncoder.swift, Packages/HFRKit/Sources/HFRModels/MPStorage/JSONValue.swift, Packages/HFRKit/Sources/HFRModels/MPStorage/JSONWriter.swift, Packages/HFRKit/Sources/HFRModels/MPStorage/MPStorageCodec.swift, Packages/HFRKit/Tests/HFRModelsTests/MPStorage/JSONWriterTests.swift, Packages/HFRKit/Tests/HFRModelsTests/MPStorage/MPStorageCodecTests.swift, Packages/HFRKit/Tests/HFRParsingTests/MPStorage/MPStoragePageParserTests.swift
The tree encoder creates JSON values, and the writer serializes them with preserved number lexemes and sorted object keys. The codec uses them for writing and validation while retaining its non-BMP and byte-limit checks. Tests cover writer output, marker-like strings, and the R60a round trip.
Model conversions and compatibility checks Packages/HFRKit/Sources/HFRModels/MPStorage/MPStorageCoding.swift, docs/HFR-PROTOCOL.md, docs/lots/LOT-062-mpstorage-merge.md, docs/lots/LOT-073-mpstorage-json-tokenizer.md
Lenient readers convert JSON number lexemes and strings using updated rules. The protocol entry and LOT documents describe the tokenizer, writer, conversions, and compatibility observations.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 47a09
No confirmed MPStorage behavior regression remains from this review; the change is mergeable after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 47a09
The change affects how shared stored data is read and rewritten, but existing account boundaries and write safeguards remain in place. No introduced security issue was established. Compatibility verification and security coverage remain incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected production exposure is storage text read through the current authenticated session and rewritten to its selected storage message. A serialization defect could affect both modelled fields and preserved other-client data in that document. The codec replacement does not itself grant access to another account, message, service, or credential.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Transport remains responsible for authenticated session use and storage-thread, message, and edit-form selection. These callers are unchanged across the full PR comparison. The public codec accepts caller-supplied values but performs only local transformation and validation; server-side authorization was not independently verified.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Encoding completes before save or creation posts remotely, and item validation precedes document mutation. Parse or encode failures therefore do not initiate those writes. Save still verifies the stored text after posting; the non-atomic interval between the remote write and verification predates this PR, and no new recovery or transaction guarantee is established.

Adversarial review (Claude Fable 5.1, ext/francoisgn-fable-review-5, independent of the author): APPROVE — head 47a091c
Findings
Low — Packages/HFRKit/Sources/HFRModels/MPStorage/JSONTreeEncoder.swift:387-393 and :423-428. superEncoder() hands out a {} placeholder node and the child encoder only reuses it when the super writes a keyed container; a super that writes a single value or an unkeyed container replaces child.node, so the parent keeps {}. Probe: Derived (keyed x:2, super.encode(to: c.superEncoder()) where Base encodes 1 in a single-value container) gives {"super":{},"x":2} where JSONEncoder gives {"super":1,"x":2}; same with an array super. No HFRModels type uses superEncoder, so no stored document is affected. Fix: give JSONTreeNode.Content a .deferred(JSONTreeEncoder) case resolved in value, or document the limitation on the encoder.
Nit — JSONTreeNode.swift:50-55: count returns 1 for a .value node; only array nodes are ever asked. Restrict to arrays or comment why.
Nit — JSONTreeEncoder.claim silently replaces a node of another kind where JSONEncoder traps; harmless for well-formed encode(to:).
Checked
Head = merge of current dev-swift (2cfa0a3) into reviewed 3e95193; the merge touches only docs/HFR-PROTOCOL.md conflict resolution, LOT-073 subsection intact.
swift test: 1494 tests, 180 suites, green on Linux (Swift 6.2.4).
Mutations caught by the PR's tests: trailing comma refused, keys sorted as Swift strings, 1.0 refused as integer, lenient string from lexeme, JSONValue not stored whole.
Doc claims probed on Linux Foundation: JSONDecoder reads 512 levels and refuses 513; accepts BOM and trailing commas; Double/Float encoding parity (-0, 1e+20, 5e-324); decodeIfPresent/decodeNil parity for null and missing keys.
R60a round trip byte for byte via writtenAsBefore; a 3 000-entry document decodes and writes in 77 ms.
No network, no state change, no secrets; HFRModels stays Foundation-only; no leftover JSONNumberBox/U+E000 marker; line length ≤ 140, no force unwraps.
LESSONS 1-56 walked; 21, 31, 53 relevant and respected.
Author note: no High or Medium. The Low (superEncoder with a non-keyed super, unused by any HFRModels type) and the two Nits are left for a follow-up so this reviewed head is the merged one.
READY FOR REVIEW — merge-ready at 47a091c. Author model: Opus 5.5.
All required checks green on this head (the failed/cancelled entries are the draft-gate placeholders, superseded by the ready-run successes), 0 open threads, CodeRabbit reviewed this head with nothing actionable (only its non-required docstring-coverage note), Fable 5.1 adversarial APPROVE on this head (above). The cross-contributor review requirement (HFRModels decoding path) is waived by the maintainer (francoisgn, 2026-11-05) in favour of the adversarial sub-agent review.
The tree encoder handed a super encoder an empty object placeholder and kept it
in the parent, so a super that wrote a single value or an unkeyed container was
written as {} where JSONEncoder writes the value (Fable review of #490, Low).
The parent now holds a deferred node read when the tree is finished. Also the
two nits of that review: JSONTreeNode.count is for array nodes only, and
claim() documents why it replaces a node where JSONEncoder traps.
