it calls finalize_shift_translated_key_sequence before returning translated and
binding. Preserve the existing return values and ensure command hooks observe
the translated shift state.

🔵 Needs a closer look
It alters the core keyboard key-sequence reader and command-loop dispatch path, a central and subtle input-handling area where regressions warrant final human review despite thorough test coverage.

What changed in this PR
This PR fixes issue #576, where pressing an unbound help event after a prefix key (e.g. C-c C-h, C-x 4 C-h, C-c ?) caused Neomacs to exit cleanly. The old reader-side dispatch_prefix_help_command ran prefix-help-command inside read_key_sequence and returned an empty sequence, which the command loop treated as end-of-input. The fix makes the key reader select prefix-help-command as the binding and return the full key sequence (help event included), so command_loop_1 dispatches it like any ordinary command — running pre-command-hook/post-command-hook and this-command bookkeeping — matching GNU Emacs 31.1. describe-prefix-bindings itself drops the trailing help event via (this-command-keys).
Changes:
- Remove the obsolete
dispatch_prefix_help_commandandpop_last_events_for_help_charhelpers; inline the help path to setbinding = prefix-help-commandand return the complete sequence. - Add regression coverage: a unit test (reader defers execution), three oracle parity tests (reader preservation, hook ordering, explicit-binding precedence), three TUI GNU-comparison tests, and a GUI test with fixture.

🔵 Needs a closer look
The change modifies the core keyboard key-sequence reader and its interaction with the command loop, shift translation, and delayed-selection/buffer restoration, which is subtle high-risk input-handling logic warranting human verification.

Pressing an unbound help event after a prefix, such as
C-c C-h, ran the help command inside the key reader and then returned an empty sequence. The command loop interpreted that result as end of input and exited cleanly. The reader also stripped the final help event and bypassed ordinary command hooks.Return the complete sequence with
prefix-help-commandas its binding, matching GNU Emacs 31.1. The command loop now dispatches help normally, including pre/post-command hooks and command identity bookkeeping. Remove the obsolete reader-side dispatch and event-stripping helpers. Finalize shift translation before returning prefix help so a shifted prefix, such asS-f5mapped tof5, remains visible as translated to command hooks.Regression coverage checks that public Lisp key readers defer execution and preserve help events, command hooks receive the complete sequence, explicit bindings take precedence, shift-translation state reaches command hooks, and subsequent interactive commands still run. TUI tests compare the help windows and subsequent rendered screens against GNU for
C-c C-h,C-x 4 C-h, andC-c ?; GUI tests check hook state and GPU presentation.Validation on Linux:
cargo nextest: 104 keyboard tests passed with GNU Emacs 31.1 oracle access enabled.cargo nextest: 4 GNU oracle parity tests passed in verify mode.cargo nextest: 4 TUI comparisons passed, including the existingC-h C-hbinding.cargo nextest: both ordinary and shifted-prefix GUI regressions passed on X11 and Wayland (four GUI cases).cargo check --workspace --all-targets,cargo fmt --all -- --check, andcargo xtask fresh-build --releasepassed.Current CI also reports two failures in files unchanged from base
278323632e: the Windows x86_64 and ARM64 checks encounter a Unix-only import ingreen_switch_test.rs, andcargo denyreports advisories against the existing ZIP 8.6.0 dependency. These are separate from the prefix-help changes. The display job has the exact same 52 failing test names as the base run. The MELPA TUI job has the same missing-binary filter error, and the MELPA GUI job has the same sandbox-cleanup error as the base. Broad GUI CI has 78 failures on both base and PR, with three differing failures; all three differing cases pass locally against both the CI-built exact base binary (278323632e) and the PR binary. Both new prefix-help GUI cases passed in CI. Broader CI still has pending shards; the local targeted verification above is complete.Fixes #576.
