Fixes #550. While fixing #545 the fallback for an XPM color key that resolves to nothing was matched to GNU's rule but not its input.

GNU reads FRAME_FOREGROUND_PIXEL once at load and paints those pixels with it (src/image.c:6518, :6537-6538) — the frame's foreground-color, which it keeps equal to the default face's foreground (src/xfaces.c:4394-4404). Neomacs passed the face the image is displayed under, with the specification's :foreground folded in. That is not academic: etc/images/letter.xpm names its foreground opaque, which no X11 database defines, and a toolbar icon is drawn under the toolbar face.

Measured, then fixed. The GUI fixture paints two decoy swatches of opaque — one under a face that asks for red, one with :foreground blue — with the frame foreground set to #123456, a colour nothing else paints. Against 4da32a6e:

fallback-face: 2304 pixels of [255, 0, 0]; the swatch followed the
fallback-face colour instead of the frame foreground

Every pixel was the face's. With the fix the same test passes: both swatches paint the frame foreground, and the six named colors and GNU's half of the fixture are unchanged.

The fix. ImageColorContext gains frame_foreground (with_frame_foreground, defaulted from foreground so no existing caller moves). The layout path sources it from the face basis's canonical face — face_resolver.default_face(), the frame's default face — and the display-property entry points that build their own params read WindowParams.default_fg; the evaluator's path already passed the default face, so it and its catalog key are untouched. image_cache hands the XPM decoder frame_foreground while XBM and SVG keep the face colours, as GNU does.

Verification. Unit: display-protocol 71/71 (incl. the new field pins), layout-engine display_spec 31/31 (incl. "the frame foreground travels beside the face colors"), renderer xpm/corpus 13/13. End to end: the GUI fixture above, red before the fix and green after, against a binary rebuilt from this branch. Readbacks: /tmp/pr545-screenshots/issue-550-{before,after}.png on the author's machine.

Image color contexts and media resolution now carry frame foreground separately from displaying-face colors. XPM decoding uses frame foreground for unresolved colors. GUI tests check this fallback in two display contexts. Infrastructure adds hash-verified fixture caching, used by an XPM decoding test.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cf542

The fallback GUI test may miss a broken swatch, and the new XPM test needs network access on a cold cache. These are bounded risks to address or accept before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cf542

The new fixture helper does not enforce its cache-directory boundary, so specially constructed filenames can direct filesystem operations elsewhere. Current callers use fixed or generated safe filenames, and downloaded content is hash-verified. This limits demonstrated exposure, but the public helper still introduces a security-relevant boundary weakness.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The newly public pinned_file helper accepts an unchecked name and uses it to construct destination, lock, and partial-file paths. Parent components can escape the documented cache directory, allowing filesystem mutation outside the cache if a caller supplies such a name. Hash verification constrains content, not filesystem authority. Current safe-name callers limit demonstrated exploitability.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — If an untrusted name reaches the helper, the affected boundary is the invoking process's filesystem authority, not only tmp/pinned-fixtures. Reachable writable directories constrain destination, partial, and lock operations. No cross-tenant, service, or privileged deployment exposure is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained path-traversal finding is supported by unchecked name propagation into filesystem paths. For example, ./../x places the destination outside the fixture cache and moves the constructed lock path farther upward. The helper is new in this PR, but current callers provide safe names; attacker-controlled reachability beyond those callers remains unproven.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — SHA-256 checks cover cached bytes, downloaded bytes before replacement, and the final destination. Downloads are capped at 32 MiB. These controls authenticate expected content but do not validate the cache filename or confine filesystem operations.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The cache and lock keys depend only on name. Calls with conflicting pins can serialize successfully yet replace bytes behind a previously returned path. Current callers use a consistent pin, so this is a contract limitation rather than a demonstrated additional attack path.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce a single-basename contract before filesystem operations. If the cache may cross trust boundaries, also protect lock and partial-file creation against symlink substitution. Digest-bound cache identity or verified returned bytes would strengthen content ownership across conflicting callers.

Count each fallback swatch separately.

count_pixels(&pixels, frame_foreground) scans the full screenshot in both loop iterations. One correct swatch can therefore satisfy both foreground assertions while the other swatch is absent or incorrect. Apply both the foreground and decoy checks to each swatch’s readback region.

Added the nyan.xpm verification without vendoring it: neomacs-infra::pinned_file (URL + SHA-256, cached under tmp/pinned-fixtures, re-verified on every use, loud on mismatch) and a renderer test that decodes the pinned file and requires its nine painted grayNN ladder values plus its None transparency. It fetches in under a second and runs from the cache offline. Follow-up, not done here: neomacs-test-fonts' private downloader could migrate onto pinned_file so the simple single-file case has exactly one implementation.

What changed in this PR

This PR aligns Neomacs’ XPM “unresolvable color key” fallback behavior with GNU Emacs by threading a distinct frame foreground color through image resolution and into the XPM decoder, and adds regression coverage (including a pinned upstream fixture) for issues #545/#550.

Changes:

  • Introduces ImageColorContext::frame_foreground and propagates it through layout/media resolution and the image cache to the XPM decoder.
  • Extends GUI and unit tests to validate fallback pixels are painted with the frame foreground (not face/spec foreground).
  • Adds neomacs-infra::pinned for fetching + SHA-256 verifying upstream fixtures at test time (used by the new nyan-mode XPM test).

Network dependency in a default unit test.

On a cold cache, this test fetches from raw.githubusercontent.com. Offline CI or a first run without network fails with a panic. The PR states this failure is intentional and the cache makes later runs offline. Confirm that CI caches tmp/pinned-fixtures, or gate the test (for example with #[ignore] or a feature) so cold-cache offline builds do not break.

As per learnings: tests should avoid direct calls to real external dependencies.

Use tempfile for test state.

Both tests write into the shared workspace cache tmp/pinned-fixtures. If an assertion panics, remove_file does not run and the probe file stays behind. Names include the process ID, so collisions are unlikely. The leftover files still accumulate. tempfile is already a dependency of this crate. Make cache_root injectable, or use a tempfile::TempDir for the probe files. Then cleanup happens on panic.

As per learnings: tests that create filesystem state should use isolated temporary directories and clean up afterward.

Review comment at @crates/neomacs-infra/src/pinned.rs around lines 35 - 48:
Add validation at the start of pinned_file to reject empty names, names
containing path separators, and the special names "." and ".." before joining
name to cache_root(). Return an error for invalid names; leave the existing
cache and locking flow unchanged.

Compare hashes case-insensitively.

sha256_hex returns lowercase hex. A pin written in uppercase never matches. The result is a permanent error, reported as "the pin no longer describes this artifact". Normalize the expected value with to_ascii_lowercase() in ensure_pinned and verify.

Review comment at @crates/neomacs-infra/src/pinned.rs at line 73:
Update ensure_pinned and verify to compare the computed lowercase SHA-256 hash
against the expected pin normalized with to_ascii_lowercase(), so uppercase pins
match without changing the reported mismatch behavior.

Two decoy swatches carry a palette entry no database defines, one under a face
that asks for red and one with a specification that asks for blue, and the
frame's foreground is set to a colour nothing else paints. Against the merged
decoder the face wins all 2304 pixels, which is the divergence #550 describes:
GNU reads the frame's foreground-color parameter once at load (src/image.c:6518,
:6537-6538) and never the face or the specification.
GNU reads FRAME_FOREGROUND_PIXEL once at load and paints those pixels with it
(src/image.c:6518 and :6537-6538) -- the frame's foreground-color, which it
keeps equal to the default face's foreground (src/xfaces.c:4394-4404). Neomacs
passed the face the image is displayed under, with the specification's
:foreground folded in, so a shipped asset like etc/images/letter.xpm (whose
palette names "opaque") painted the face's colour where GNU paints the
frame's -- measured at 2304 of 2304 pixels in the GUI fixture.

Carry it as its own field on ImageColorContext, defaulted from foreground so
no existing caller moves, and source it in the layout path from the face
basis's canonical face -- which is face_resolver.default_face(), the frame's
default face -- while the evaluator path already passes the default face.
The display-property entry points that build their own params read the same
value from WindowParams.default_fg. image_cache hands the XPM decoder
frame_foreground; XBM and SVG keep the face colours, as in GNU.
The report's other named asset is upstream's, so a copy in this tree would be a
fork of it. neomacs-infra gains pinned_file: a URL plus a SHA-256 is the pin,
the bytes land in tmp/pinned-fixtures, a cached copy is re-verified before it
is trusted, and a mismatch is an error rather than a quietly different fixture
-- the convention neomacs-test-fonts applies to its fonts, whose single-file
case now has one home instead of a second copy. neomacs-infra is a
dev-dependency throughout, so nothing of this reaches the shipped binary.

The test decodes the pinned nyan.xpm and requires the nine grayNN values its
pixel data paints to arrive as the shared database says -- which is exactly
what the report means by "gray details turn black" -- and that its None pixels
are transparent. Expectations come from the same table the decoder reads,
which the drift guard pins to etc/rgb.txt and the GUI test pins to GNU's own
color-values.
Both fallback comments in image_cache still named the face foreground
while the decode beside them now takes the frame foreground, and the
fallback test kept the name it had when callers passed the face
foreground.

nyan.xpm's palette holds fourteen grayNN names, not fifteen.

resolve_display_replacement and resolve_display_property take eight
arguments after issue #550 widened them; allow clippy::too_many_arguments
item by item, as the display crate layout doc asks.

XPM: an unresolvable color key falls back to the image's face foreground, not GNU's frame foreground
