Follow-up to #544 (merged): the SVG table is the other color source Swash never paints, so SVG-only color fonts rendered blank the same way COLRv1 did.

Documents render through usvg/resvg with the painter's placement conventions (same ColorGlyphRaster left/top/device rules), behind the existing source dispatch — COLR before SVG, matching krilla's ordering.

Spec rules implemented here rather than delegated:

  • design-grid coordinates: y-down, origin at the baseline, one unit per design unit; em-square viewport, no clipping
  • only the element with id="glyph<ID>" describes the glyph; the rest of the document is referenceable definitions
  • gzip-compressed documents, sniffed by magic bytes
  • currentColor resolves to the text foreground (injected as the root color property, which usvg resolves)
  • var(--colorN, fallback) resolves to the CPAL entry (raw CPAL read through ttf-parser's raw-face accessor) or to the fallback

Two subtleties worth flagging:

  • Sibling glyph descriptions are pruned out of the parsed document before rendering, so a document serving a glyph range renders exactly the requested glyph, while its coordinate context (a root viewBox, wrapper group transforms) is preserved. Rendering the whole document would paint every sibling.
  • resvg::render_node could not be used: its bounding box includes ancestor transforms but its rendering does not, so a root viewBox sized the raster and then moved the artwork out of it. The viewBox test (spec examples 2/3) caught it; the fix is pruning plus a whole-tree render.

Verified: materializer 78/78 — ten new tests on synthetic documents (placement, gzip parity, viewBox equivalence, shared defs plus use, currentColor, palette variable plus fallback, per-glyph selection in one document, missing element) and one real document from the pinned COLRv1 fixture. GUI colrv1_emoji green on a fresh release build and pdump.

The other color source Swash never paints: a font whose glyphs are SVG
documents rendered blank, same as the COLRv1 case. Documents now render
through usvg and resvg with the painter's placement conventions, so the
atlas treats them like any other color raster.

Spec rules implemented here rather than delegated: the document's space
is the design grid (y-down, origin at the baseline, one unit per design
unit); only the element with id glyph-plus-id describes the glyph, and
the rest of the document is referenceable definitions; documents may be
gzip-compressed; currentColor resolves to the text foreground; and
var(--colorN, fallback) resolves to the CPAL entry or to the fallback.

Sibling glyph descriptions are pruned out of the parsed document so one
document serving a range of glyphs renders exactly the requested one,
while the document's own coordinate context (a root viewBox, wrapper
group transforms) is preserved.

Verified: materializer 78/78 (ten new SVG tests on synthetic documents
plus a real document from the pinned COLRv1 fixture).

The color-glyph rasterizer now attempts to render glyphs from SVG table documents. The renderer handles compressed documents, glyph selection, palette colors, foreground colors, and raster bounds. New tests cover SVG rendering and shared synthetic font-fixture helpers.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to cd360

Some valid SVG glyphs can render incorrectly or fall back to outlines, while a crafted compressed glyph can exhaust editor memory. Address these paths before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to cd360

A malicious SVG color font can consume excessive memory before image-size limits apply, potentially freezing or terminating the application. Existing fallback behavior does not contain this work. Exploitation requires the affected font and glyph to be selected for rendering; wider service exposure is not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The newly reachable SVG path expands gzip data into an unbounded buffer inside the rendering flow before applying raster limits. A selected malicious font can exhaust application memory; fallback handles ordinary parse failures, not containment of the preceding allocation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An attacker must influence a font asset that is selected and reach an SVG-covered glyph without an earlier source producing a raster. Excessive expansion can affect the application process performing rendering, not merely the requested glyph. The evidence does not establish a remotely accessible endpoint or cross-tenant scope.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained denial-of-service finding is supported by the exact source: SVG-table bytes reach unbounded gzip read_to_end before any rendering-size rejection. The base-to-head dispatch change introduces this exposure rather than merely retaining an already reachable SVG decompression path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Finite positive pixel size, bounded raster dimensions, pixel-count checks, and final byte-length validation constrain output. They do not constrain the earlier decompression and document allocations. Glyph pruning and downstream fallback likewise do not prevent those allocations.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — SVG intermediates are local to each call, and ordinary fallible stages return None before raster publication. The shared face cache requires mutable access and is not modified by SVG helpers. These properties avoid partial SVG publication, but repeated attempts can repeat decompression and allocation; resource exhaustion is not an ordinary recoverable None result.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Apply an explicit document budget during streaming decompression, rejecting excess output before collection and XML parsing. Bound subsequent document-processing work and route budget rejection through the existing fallback. Separately verify and explicitly constrain dependency resource-loading authority.

🌐 Web query:

official SVG specification root svg color presentation attribute duplicate XML attributes well-formedness

💡 Result:

- **`color` on the root `<svg>`:** SVG 2 lists `color` as a presentation attribute supported on any SVG-namespace element, so it can be placed on the root `<svg>` and inherited by descendants as a CSS property. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/styling.html))
- **Duplicate attributes:** XML 1.0 says an attribute name must not appear more than once in a start tag; duplicates make the document **not well-formed**. So use one `color` attribute, not two. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/TR/xml/))

Example: `<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" color="red">…</svg>`

Citations:

- 1: https://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/styling.html
- 2: https://www.w3.org/TR/xml/

Replace an existing root color attribute.

A valid SVG document can already define color on its root element. inject_foreground currently appends another color attribute. XML rejects duplicate attributes, so pruned_document returns None before usvg renders the glyph. The rasterizer then falls back to monochrome outlines.

What changed in this PR

Adds OpenType SVG table rendering to the color glyph rasterizer so SVG-only color fonts no longer render blank, using usvg/resvg while preserving existing placement conventions.

Changes:

  • Implement SVG table glyph rasterization via usvg parsing + resvg rendering, integrated into ColorGlyphRasterizer dispatch after COLR.
  • Add synthetic + fixture-backed SVG tests (gzip, viewBox, defs/use, currentColor, CPAL variables, per-glyph selection).
  • Refactor shared test harness helpers into a dedicated support module.

Review pass over the SVG renderer.

- Inflating a gzip document now runs under a ceiling (64 MiB; the pinned
fixture's largest document decodes to 14 MB) instead of allocating
whatever a crafted stream expands to.
- A document that sets the color property on its root keeps it: the spec
makes that an explicit override of the host currentColor, and a second
color attribute would not parse as XML at all.
- Pruning keeps every sibling that is not another glyph description.
Definitions may live outside defs, so a renderable sibling is wrapped
in one rather than deleted — its artwork must not paint, but
  references into it must resolve.

Verified: materializer 81/81, three new tests covering each rule.
