Plain JSON. No framework, no runtime, no lock-in. Use it from jq, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, or anything that reads a file.
Most Algeria datasets are stuck on the old 48 or 58 wilayas. After the 2025/2026 reform brought the country to 69 wilayas, I couldn't find a clean, ready-to-use source that reflected it — so I built one and made it easy to drop into any project.
The nested file data/algeria.json is the single source of truth. Everything else is derived from it and checked by CI on every change.

Every record carries nom_ar, nom_fr, nom_en. Since Algerian place names use the Latin alphabet, nom_en matches nom_fr for almost every entry — the one real exonym is Algiers (Alger).

Packages — both are named algeria-wilayas-communes and are published together from the same v* tag, so a version number means the same data on npm and on PyPI.

- Daïra layer: wilaya → commune reflects the current 69-wilaya structure; daïra → commune membership comes from the pre-2025 structure regrouped under the new wilayas. Where the reform split a daïra across two wilayas, it appears under each — so the daïra count is 591, not ~548.
- Postal codes: 27 of 1541 communes have
code_postal: null(small communes missing from the reference data). Corrections welcome.

The dataset states its own provenance. data/algeria.json carries a sources array, verbatim:

- Loi 26-06 was signed on 4 April 2026 and published in the Journal Officiel n°25 on 5 April 2026. The two dates are one day apart and are not interchangeable: the law is dated 4 April, the JO issue is dated 5 April.
othmanus/algeria-cities— the community dataset the daïra→commune membership and the postal codes were cross-referenced against. Named outright rather than folded into "open community datasets", because a dataset that will not name its inputs cannot be audited.
Both packages export their provenance, so it can be logged or asserted on rather than looked up: DATA_VERSION ("2.0.0"), SOURCE_LAW ("Loi 26-06 du 4 avril 2026, JO n°25") and LAST_VERIFIED ("2026-07-20") — the date a maintainer last checked the data against the sources above.
