feat(core): pass agent settings through at the flag tier - #473
Conversation
New optional agent field `settings`, an object of Claude Code settings. `toSDKOptions` hands it to the Agent SDK's `settings` option; the CLI runtime emits the same thing as `--settings <json>`, so a config behaves the same on either runtime. Omitted entirely when unset or empty. Flag settings outrank every file source but managed policy and apply whatever `setting_sources` loads, so this is the channel for keys a project's checked-in `.claude/settings.json` is not trusted to set. The motivating one is `autoMemoryDirectory`, which Paddock needs to set per agent (edspencer/paddock#955): Claude Code ignores it in projectSettings, herdctl never loads userSettings for SDK agents, and the `CLAUDE_COWORK_MEMORY_PATH_OVERRIDE` env alternative disables the auto-memory write exemption, so there was no working route. Tests drive addAgent (the strict schema) -> toSDKOptions -> query() options, the CLI argv, and a compile-time contract against the SDK's own `Options["settings"]`. Mutation-checked: removing either passthrough line fails them. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

- Line 297: Update the handling of options.agent.settings when adding --settings
to args so credentials are not exposed: use a file-backed settings option if the
CLI supports one, and redact the settings value from the command logged by
logger.debug. Preserve the settings passed to the CLI without logging their
contents.

Adversarial review of #473: the CLI runtime's debug line printed the whole argv, so the new --settings JSON (which can carry resolved secrets via env, apiKeyHelper or interpolated ${VAR}s) reached the log. Redact its value; a test asserts the secret never appears and fails without the redaction. Docs: warn that settings travel as argv on both runtimes, say Claude Code ignores bad keys silently rather than validating them, and note that YAML interpolation has no escape for Claude Code's own ${...} syntax. …'s New 0.78.2 5.34.0 carries the agent `settings` passthrough (edspencer/herdctl#473) that #955's autoMemoryDirectory rides on; older cores reject the key at addAgent, so the floor has to move, not just the lockfile. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Found 1 documentation gap across 24 commits since last audit (3707bd4): - Added What's New entry for Per-Agent Claude Code Settings feature (Oct 10, @herdctl/core@5.34.0, PR #473) The new `settings` field enables per-agent Claude Code configuration, with the primary use case being `autoMemoryDirectory`. Includes security hardening via log redaction of sensitive settings values. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Adds an agent-level
settingsfield: Claude Code settings applied at the flag tier. Needed by edspencer/paddock#955.What
settings: Record<string, unknown>, optional, onAgentConfigSchema. It's agent-level only, with no fleetdefaults.settings.toSDKOptionspasses it to the Agent SDK'ssettingsoption, as a shallow copy so the resolved agent can't be mutated. The key is omitted when unset or empty.--settings <json>, so a config behaves the same on either runtime.settingssection inconfiguration/agent-config.md, plus a changeset (minor). Why
Flag settings outrank every file source except managed policy, and they apply whatever
setting_sourcesloads. That makes them the only channel for keys a project's checked-in.claude/settings.jsonisn't trusted to set. The motivating key isautoMemoryDirectory, which Paddock needs to set per agent:CLAUDE_COWORK_MEMORY_PATH_OVERRIDEenv alternative also switches off the "memory writes are always allowed" exemption, which defeats the purpose. So there was no working route without this field.
Compatibility:
AgentConfigSchemais.strict(), so an older core rejects the key withUnrecognized key: "settings". A consumer that sets it needs this release.Tests
addAgent(the real strict schema) →getAgents→toSDKOptions→ the options the mockedquery()receives.--settings, whose JSON round-trips.SDKQueryOptions["settings"]is assignable to the SDK'sOptions["settings"].tsc --noEmitclean.End to end with the real binary: a Paddock build overlaid with this branch's
distboots, registers agents withsettings, and its memory writes land. The overlay is needed because this isn't released yet. The integration test and a live-instance run are in the Paddock PR.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
