Raise the floor from ^0.3.283 to ^0.3.286, the current npm latest, and refresh the lockfile. 0.3.286 is breaking upstream in one respect: the TypeScript Agent SDK no longer sends a default permissionMode, so Claude Code applies the loaded settings' permissions.defaultMode instead (falling back to 'auto'). This does not reach herdctl — toSDKOptions always sets permissionMode explicitly (agent.permission_mode ?? "acceptEdits") and the CLI runtime always passes --permission-mode, so agents configured with permission_mode: default still get manual approvals. No exported SDK types changed between 0.3.283 and 0.3.286, so no code adaptation was needed. Closes #471 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Explanation
The PR updates
packages/core/package.jsonfrom^0.3.283to^0.3.286and adds.changeset/bump-claude-agent-sdk-0-3-286.mdfor@herdctl/core. The reportedpnpm build,pnpm typecheck, andpnpm testresults satisfy the verification objective, including the identified pre-existing environment-dependent failure. The summary does not provide reviewable evidence for the requiredpnpm-lock.yamlrefresh.pnpm-lock.yamlis intentionally excluded from review, so this requirement cannot be established. The reported explicitpermissionModehandling supports the issue's no-adaptation requirement.

The official TypeScript changelog for **v0.3.285** says it added `provider_not_allowed` to `startup_failure_reason` and `allowedProviders` to the `Settings` type. ([github.com](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-agent-sdk-typescript/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md))

Scope the SDK type claim to herdctl’s APIs.
SDK v0.3.285 added Settings.allowedProviders and startup_failure_reason: "provider_not_allowed". These APIs are not used or re-exported by herdctl. Keep the no-adaptation conclusion, but remove the broad claim that no exported SDK types changed.
Suggested changeset wording
-No exported SDK types changed, so no code adaptation was needed.
+Although v0.3.285 added `Settings.allowedProviders` and `startup_failure_reason: "provider_not_allowed"`, herdctl does not use or re-export these APIs, so no code adaptation was needed.📝 Committable suggestion

Moves this PR's target from ^0.3.286 to ^0.3.302, the current npm latest,
and refreshes the lockfile. Peer ranges are unchanged
(@anthropic-ai/sdk >=0.93.0, @modelcontextprotocol/sdk ^1.29.0, zod ^4).
Reviewed 0.3.287-0.3.302. The exported API surface is additive over the
whole range: the only new exports are BUILTIN_TOOL_NAMES and
LEGACY_TOOL_NAME_ALIASES; nothing was removed or renamed, and
PermissionMode, SdkPluginConfig and SettingSource are byte-identical.
0.3.302 changes an *omitted* permissionMode to start in 'default' on
third-party providers, the same shape of change as 0.3.286. Neither
reaches herdctl: toSDKOptions always sets permissionMode explicitly and
the CLI runtime always passes --permission-mode.
Two other upstream behaviour changes were checked and do not apply:
0.3.300 reinterprets thinking:{type:'disabled'} and maxThinkingTokens:0,
neither of which herdctl ever sets; and 0.3.300 validates updatedInput
from PreToolUse/PermissionRequest hooks, while herdctl registers only
Stop and PostToolUse callbacks.
Inherited runtime change worth noting: fork subagents are on by default
in SDK sessions as of 0.3.302 (CLAUDE_CODE_FORK_SUBAGENT=0 opts out).

@anthropic-ai/claude-agent-sdkinpackages/corefrom^0.3.283to^0.3.302(current npmlatest) and refreshespnpm-lock.yaml.packages/core/package.jsonis the only manifest referencing the SDK.The lockfile diff is scoped entirely to the SDK and its eight platform binaries. Peer ranges are unchanged:
@anthropic-ai/sdk >=0.93.0,@modelcontextprotocol/sdk ^1.29.0,zod ^4.0.0.Breaking changes reviewed — none require adaptation
Two
permissionModedefault changes (0.3.286, and 0.3.302 for third-party providers / telemetry-off / fresh installs): whenpermissionModeis omitted, Claude Code now picks the starting mode itself. Neither reaches herdctl, which never omits it:toSDKOptions—packages/core/src/runner/sdk-adapter.ts:181— always setsresult.permissionMode = agent.permission_mode ?? DEFAULT_PERMISSION_MODE("acceptEdits").packages/core/src/runner/runtime/cli-runtime.ts:241-242— always passes--permission-mode.So an agent configured
permission_mode: defaultstill gets exactlydefault, and one with nopermission_modestill getsacceptEdits.0.3.300 —
thinking: { type: 'disabled' }andmaxThinkingTokens: 0now run as adaptive thinking on models that can't disable thinking. Inert here: herdctl never sets either option (see theresult.*assignments insdk-adapter.ts—permissionMode,allowedTools,disallowedTools,systemPrompt,settingSources,mcpServers,plugins,model,maxTurns,resume,forkSession,tools,cwd,env, and the MCP transport fields; no thinking config).0.3.300 —
updatedInputfrom PreToolUse and PermissionRequest hooks is now validated and unknown keys dropped. Inert here:packages/core/src/session/session-hooks.ts:126-127registers onlyStopandPostToolUsecallbacks.0.3.295 — the SDK now sends named option values as
--flag=value. This is internal to the SDK's own spawn of Claude Code. herdctl's CLI runtime builds its own argv and is unaffected.0.3.299 — reserved MCP server names refused (
__proto__,__defineGetter__, …). herdctl does not generate server names from untrusted input in that shape.One runtime behaviour change to be aware of
0.3.302 makes fork subagents (
subagent_type: "fork") on by default in SDK sessions, matching the terminal;CLAUDE_CODE_FORK_SUBAGENT=0opts out. This is a behaviour change for agents that spawn subagents, not a compile break, and nothing in herdctl needs to change for it. Note this is unrelated to herdctl's ownforkSessionoption, which is session forking.API surface: additive
