I noticed mysql did not pick up changes within the my.cnf file. Parameters I entered in my.cnf could not be found, when I did a "show variables like 'MY_VARIABLE%'".
I digged into the common startup scripts of Ubuntu and noticed, that the HOME env variable was missing in the run.sh script.
