fix(ai): reporting ignored sampling never reads the catalogue before the gateway is asked - #769

Conversation
…stered catalogue answers its first call 27.10.0 set `llm.sampling.ignored` at the top of agent() and llm() through ignoredSampling -> modelSpec, before the gateway was consulted and whether or not a knob was asked. An app whose gateway registers the model rows when it is first built had every first call refused X_AI_MODEL_UNKNOWN by a span attribute. The attribute is now set when the run ends; a call asking no knob reads no row; an unregistered model leaves the attribute out. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Review comments at @packages/ai/src/agent.ts:
- Around line 200-207: Make sampling telemetry best-effort in agent() and llm()
by preventing exceptions from reportSampling, including those from the installed
gateway’s optional samplingWires method, from changing the call result. Guard
the telemetry work in both reportSampling implementations so agent and non-cache
llm results remain intact, and cache hits cannot fail while reporting sampling.
Review comments at @packages/ai/src/lazy-catalogue.test.ts:
- Around line 72-99: Extend the lazy catalogue tests around `lazyAgent()` and
`declare()` with separate cases asserting that a failed run still records
`llm.sampling.ignored`, an uncatalogued provider-served model preserves the
call’s original error and omits the reporting attribute without raising
`X_AI_MODEL_UNKNOWN`, and an `llm()` semantic-cache hit records
`llm.sampling.ignored`. Update the existing cache test to assert the attribute
as well as provider-call count.

Regression in 27.10.0, found by an app that registers its model catalogue when its gateway is first built (a lazy gateway behind
configureAi).27.10.0 added the
llm.sampling.ignoredspan attribute at the TOP ofagent()(agent.ts:199) andllm()(llm.ts:185). Computing it callsmodelSpec()(sampling.ts:77) beforeaiGateway()is consulted, so in such an app everyagent()/llm()call failed withX_AI_MODEL_UNKNOWN (registered: none), even when notemperature/seedwas asked for. In 27.9.0 nothing read the catalogue before the gateway.Fix:
ignoredSamplingreturns[]without reading a row when no setting was asked for; the attribute is set when the run ends (answered or failed, and on anllm()cache hit) and is left out if the model is still unregistered. A span attribute never fails the call it describes.Test
lazy-catalogue.test.tsreproduces the app's setup (a lazy gateway that registers on first build) foragent()andllm(), with and without sampling: 4 of 4 red before, green after.bun test --isolate packages/ai: 864 pass, 0 fail. Confirmed in the app: its failing job test passes with the patched files.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
