feat(ai): provider prompt caching for agent() and llm(); a tool-loop guard and a run deadline - #764
Conversation
…per turn and run; a repeated-turn guard and a run deadline
agent() asks the provider to cache each turn's prefix (default 'auto'; llm() 'off'):
GenerateRequest takes system { stable, run } and promptCache { session? }, and
PROMPT_CACHE_RULES decides what each wire and host is sent - cache_control blocks on
the Anthropic wire, content-part marks for anthropic/* on OpenRouter, nothing for
other models there or on OpenAI, x-session-id / prompt_cache_key for a session key.
The chat-completions reader takes cache_write_tokens out of prompt_tokens; onTurn
gains the run's running usage and cost. maxRepeatedToolCalls (default 3) stops a
loop repeating the same calls and results (X_AGENT_TOOL_LOOP); deadlineMs bounds a
run's wall clock (X_AGENT_DEADLINE); a caller abort mid-call is X_ABORTED.

- Line 37: Update the cause text for X_AGENT_DEADLINE in the agent error
construction to describe deadline expiration generically across setup,
model-call, and tool-batch phases; do not claim a model call was aborted when
the timeout may have occurred elsewhere.

…ne; the write-rate estimate only where a provider marks; alternating tool cycles are caught; no cache mark on a blank block or past four Review follow-ups to the prompt-caching change: - X_AGENT_TOOL_LOOP and X_AGENT_DEADLINE are registered terminal, so an agentJob dead-letters on attempt one instead of buying the same run per attempt. - The run deadline rides each tool's own ctx.signal. - estimateCost prices a cache write only when a provider serving the model would mark the request (Provider.marksPromptCache), at the dearer of write and input. - The loop guard detects cycles of one to three tool turns. - The Anthropic wire never marks an empty or whitespace-only text block and counts a caller's own marks against the four first. - A prompt_cache_key over 64 characters is sent to OpenAI as a hash of itself.
