bootc: install mount picks the deployment from the default boot entry (--boot/--esp) #31

Open

Description

@cgwalters-bot

Follow-up to bootc-dev/bootc#2483 (cgwalters' review comment on mount.rs:90). Read the ESP and /boot (explicit --boot/--esp), pick the default BLS/UKI entry as the bootloader would, and resolve backend + deployment from its composefs=/ostree= karg instead of counting deployments. Board scheduler: no plan. A triage run is asked whether this is done; it answers here. Delete this comment to ask again.

Not done; it needs design before it can be planned. Nothing merged since the issue was opened (2026-09-26) picks the deployment from the default boot entry. The PR that does it, bootc-dev/bootc#2515, is a draft that the maintainer parked.

    What was merged

    • install: Add explicit offline deployment mount API bootc-dev/bootc#2483 (merged 2026-09-28) added bootc install mount. On main, crates/lib/src/mount.rs still counts deployments: select_backend(ostree_deployments.len(), composefs_deployments.len()) fails with target must contain exactly one deployment, and --latest is documented as "Currently the sysroot must contain exactly one". It has no --boot or --esp and reads no boot entries.
    • None of the other bootc PRs merged since then (#2476, #2516, #2517, #2475, #2530, ...) change how the deployment is selected.

    What is open

    • install mount: Select the deployment from the default boot entry bootc-dev/bootc#2515 implements the issue: it orders entries the way bootc status does, resolves the deployment from composefs=/ostree=, and adds --esp (but no --boot, by design). It is a draft, CHANGES_REQUESTED by cgwalters and Johan-Liebert1, and the DCO check needs action.
    • cgwalters said there that they don't like how bootc probes the bootloader. On grub-cc the offline probe reports systemd-boot, so BLS entries would be ordered by sort-key instead of GRUB's order (GrubCC: Follow UPAI bootloader sorting spec bootc-dev/bootc#2221). They proposed that bootupd write the BLS conformance marker file as grub-bls and that bootc dispatch on that marker. They also wrote: "Let's take this one as draft and move it off the p0 composefs stabilization list."
    • Other review points that are still open: find the ESP the way install does (/efi, then /boot/efi, then the block devices backing the root, and only on arches that have an ESP; Johan-Liebert1 notes that gpt-auto mounts the ESP at /boot). Also: drop the function-as-argument parameters, use Dir::is_mountpoint, and add a comment for grub-cc.

Needed before this can be planned

    1. A design for the bootloader identification that replaces probing. What bootupd writes (the marker name and values, for grub, grub-cc and systemd-boot), where it writes it, how bootc reads it offline, and what bootc falls back to on systems installed before the marker existed. This touches coreos/bootupd as well as bootc, and I found no issue tracking it.
    2. A decision from cgwalters on whether #2515 waits for (1), or lands now with the current probe and a known-wrong order on multi-deployment grub-cc.
    3. The ESP discovery rule to use for --esp's default.
    4. Whether the issue's --boot option is still wanted; #2515 dropped it on purpose.

Once (1) and (2) are settled, #2515 can be rebased and its review addressed as an implement job.

Still valid, still not done, and still not plannable: it is blocked on the bootloader-marker decision tracked in #252. Nothing has changed since the 17 Oct triage, so I posted no implement plan.

Checked as of 24 Oct 2026

    Decisions still needed from cgwalters

    1. Settle bootupd: write a grub-bls conformance marker (entries.srel) and dispatch on it #252 (where the marker lives, its values, and the fallback for systems installed before it existed), or decide that #2515 lands first with the current probe and a known-wrong default entry on multi-deployment grub-cc (GrubCC: Follow UPAI bootloader sorting spec bootc-dev/bootc#2221).
    2. The default ESP discovery rule for --esp: /efi, then /boot/efi, then the block devices backing the root, plus the gpt-auto case where the ESP is at /boot.
    3. Whether the --boot option named in this issue is still wanted. #2515 dropped it on purpose.

Once (1) is settled, the work is one implement job: rebase #2515, dispatch on the marker, and address the open review comments (Dir::is_mountpoint, no function-as-argument parameters, a comment for grub-cc).

To stop the board from re-triaging this, mark the issue as blocked by #252.

Read: this issue and its comments, #252 and its triage, bootc-dev/bootc#2515 (state, commits, comments and reviews since 16 Oct), the commit history of mount.rs on bootc main (69057a8), searches of coreos/bootupd, bootc-dev/bootc and cgwalters-forge for the marker, and job-plans.md.

Still blocked on #252 (the bootloader-marker decision). Nothing changed since the 24 Oct triage, so I posted no implement plan.

Checked 25 Oct 2026: bootc main is still at 69057a8, and the last commit to crates/lib/src/mount.rs is 22f60c2 (28 Sep), so bootc install mount still counts deployments and has no --esp/--boot. bootc-dev/bootc#2515 is still a draft with CHANGES_REQUESTED and no activity since 1 Oct. #252 has had no activity since its 22 Oct triage, and no open bootc or bootupd PR or issue mentions the entries.srel marker.

The decisions listed on 24 Oct still stand: settle #252 (or accept landing #2515 with the current probe and a wrong default entry on multi-deployment grub-cc, bootc-dev/bootc#2221), pick the default ESP discovery rule, and say whether --boot is still wanted. After that this is one implement job: rebase #2515, dispatch on the marker and address the open review comments.

Marking this issue blocked by #252 would stop the board from re-triaging it every day.

Question for the operator (from the audit of the needs-human queue): install mount: settle tracker#252 first (A), or land bootc#2515 with the current probe and accept the wrong default on multi-deployment grub (B)? Also: is --boot still wanted?

The operator answered on bootc#2515: keep it a draft until the entries.srel marker (#252) exists. Blocked by #252.
