image-builder: select composefs from bootc's composefs-backend install config #29
Follow-up to cgwalters-forge/bootc#23 (bootc [install] composefs-backend key). osbuild's org.osbuild.bootc.install-to-filesystem stage runs bootc install inside the image, so bootc honors the key, but image-builder only sets ComposeFS / skips the ostree deployment mount when UnifiedKernel is true (pkg/manifest/raw_bootc.go:169-208). For a BLS image with the key, the first customization stage then fails in org.osbuild.ostree.deployment ("Could not find deployment"). Fix: add composefs-backend to BootcInstallConfiguration (pkg/bootc/resolver.go, parsed from bootc install print-configuration) and treat it like UnifiedKernel for backend selection; the customizations on composefs still need bootc install mount (bootc#2483), see triage https://gist.github.com/cgwalters-bot/b0baccf1e226e022822655cb5bb269a8. osbuild/images was renamed osbuild/image-builder.

Follow-up to cgwalters-forge/bootc#23 (the bootc [install] composefs-backend key). image-builder only picks the composefs path when UnifiedKernel is true (pkg/manifest/raw_bootc.go), so a BLS image that sets the key fails in org.osbuild.ostree.deployment. Fix: read composefs-backend from bootc install print-configuration into BootcInstallConfiguration and treat it like UnifiedKernel for backend selection. Customizations on composefs still need bootc install mount (bootc-dev/bootc#2483).
Per D8 (tracker#244, answer A: tested drafts): implemented as tested draft cgwalters-forge/image-builder#7 (approved; awaiting cgwalters' text and /promote --human-text).
Triage (22 Oct 2026): the bug is still real, but the fix as written no longer applies, and the replacement fix is blocked upstream. This needs your decision.
The bug is unchanged on image-builder main.raw_bootc.go only sets ComposeFS and skips org.osbuild.ostree.deployment when UnifiedKernel is true. A composefs-native BLS image is still installed as composefs by bootc, and it still fails at the first customization stage. I read the code but did not rebuild an image to reproduce this; bootc: mount the deployment with bootc when it has install mount image-builder#7 hit and tested this case.
A. Wait for HMS-11501. Park bootc CI: cover composefs upgrade paths (bridge test, Fedora upgrade, btrfs) #7 and this issue, then re-plan image-builder against osbuild's own composefs deployment mount. That mount won't use bootc, so image-builder will have to know the backend again: use the same marker-file check as bootc.
The board pass asks a triage run to plan this issue.

Triage (24 Oct 2026): no job plan yet. This still needs your choice of A, B or C from the 22 Oct triage. Nothing has changed since then.
I checked again:
The bug is still there. osbuild/image-builder main (9b0a582) is 6 commits past the last triage. None of them touch pkg/manifest/raw_bootc.go or pkg/bootc/. ComposeFS and skipping org.osbuild.ostree.deployment are still gated only on UnifiedKernel. I read the code; I did not rebuild an image.
The plan in the issue body is still obsolete. There is no composefs-backend key to parse. bootc now picks composefs from the image itself: a UKI, or /usr/lib/composefs/setup-root-conf.toml with no ostree prepare-root.conf.
There's no reply from you yet, so I haven't posted a plan. Option B is ready to plan once you pick it: detect a composefs-native image from those marker files, treat it like UnifiedKernel, and refuse customizations, stacked on #2. Reply with A, B or C.

✅ dispatch ended well. Result: #29 (comment)

Triage (22 Oct 2026): the bug is still real, but the fix as written no longer applies, and the replacement fix is blocked upstream. This needs your decision.
What changed since this was filed:
composefs-backendinstall-config key. install: Default to the composefs backend for composefs-only images bootc#23 dropped it and was folded into lints: Don't require ostree bits on composefs-native images bootc-dev/bootc#2500 (merged 2 Oct). Since then, bootc main picks composefs by default for a UKI image, or for an image that has/usr/lib/composefs/setup-root-conf.tomland no ostreeprepare-root.conf. So the suggestion to parse the key intoBootcInstallConfigurationis obsolete. Upstream,BootcInstallConfigurationstill has only the root filesystem type and the bootloader.raw_bootc.goonly setsComposeFSand skipsorg.osbuild.ostree.deploymentwhenUnifiedKernelis true. A composefs-native BLS image is still installed as composefs by bootc, and it still fails at the first customization stage. I read the code but did not rebuild an image to reproduce this; bootc: mount the deployment with bootc when it hasinstall mountimage-builder#7 hit and tested this case.install mountimage-builder#7 avoids having to detect the backend: it usesbootc install mount(install: Add explicit offline deployment mount API bootc-dev/bootc#2483, merged) through a neworg.osbuild.bootc.deploymentmount. That mount was opened upstream as mounts: Add org.osbuild.bootc.deployment, running the build root's bootc osbuild/osbuild#2575, and@achilleas-kclosed it on 21 Oct. Their objections: a mount service shouldn't run the build root's bootc, and osbuild should mount the composefs deployment itself. They opened HMS-11501 for that work and plan to put it in their next sprint. bootc CI: cover composefs upgrade paths (bridge test, Fedora upgrade, btrfs) #7 emits that mount, so it can't merge upstream as it stands. It also hasn't been rebased since its 7 Oct conflict inpkg/distro/defs/bootc_image_test.go, and your approval was dismissed. The decision:
UnifiedKernel: setComposeFSand skip the ostree deployment mount. Refuse customizations with the warning UKI images already get (from bootc: warn about customizations dropped for UKI images image-builder#2). Such builds would then succeed without customizations instead of failing. This is one PR, stacked on bootc: Add finalize-staged hold unit to fix /boot automount reboot hang (plan-44 flake) #2.My recommendation is B, then A. If you choose B, reply here and I'll post a job plan.
