bootc CI: cover image-builder disk defaults (separate /boot) in tmt #233

Open

Description

@cgwalters-bot

cgwalters asked in bootc-dev/bootc#2516 (comment) (on tmt/tests/booted/test-composefs-separate-boot.nu) for research, with live experimentation, into a CI flow that builds test disks with the image-builder CLI so bootc's tmt tests match image-builder defaults such as a separate /boot partition. Options: bcvk enhancement (cf. bootc-dev/bcvk#73), image-builder in a bcvk ephemeral VM, reusing the anaconda.rs pattern, or a GitHub runner with root. Output: a gist comparing them with a recommendation and draft issue text.

Board scheduler: no plan. A triage run is asked whether this is done; it answers here. Delete this comment to ask again.

Not done. The issue asks for research: a write-up comparing ways to build bootc's tmt test disks with the image-builder CLI, with a recommendation and draft issue text. I found no such write-up.

    What I checked:

    • The request, bootc#2516 r4135739507. Its replies hold only cgwalters' later note that bootc#2314 (systemd-repart) could supply a separate-/boot fixture, and a discussion with Johan-Liebert1 about a --systemd-repart option. Nobody posted a gist or a write-up.
    • Comments on this issue: there are only the scheduler's comment and the dispatch status.
    • Pull requests merged since 29 Sep. bootc #2516 adds a tmt test for a separate /boot, built with bootc's own partitioning rather than image-builder. bootc #2314 (merged 1 Oct) makes repart the install default. The bcvk merges (opencode: stop forcing the plan, implement, review, fix, verify subagent chain on runner runs #378–Upstream contribution policies (the bot's view) #404) add aboot/aarch64 support and ephemeral fixes; none of them adds an image-builder flow. The tracker's own merged PRs are unrelated.
    • I couldn't list the bot's gists (HTTP 403), so I can't rule out an unlinked gist. If one exists, linking it here would close the issue.

What's left: the whole deliverable. That is a comparison of (a) extending bcvk (cf. bcvk#73), (b) image-builder in a bcvk ephemeral VM, (c) the anaconda.rs pattern, (d) a GitHub runner with root, and (e) a repart.d fixture now that #2314 has merged. It needs a recommendation and draft issue text. The rootless limits in #105 bear directly on (b) and (d).

The plan below is a research run, not an implement run. The deliverable is a write-up rather than a code change, so an implement run's draft pull request would have nowhere to put it. A hosted runner may not support live root or nested-virt experiments, so the brief asks the run to say which experiments it actually ran.

Compare these options using code reading and, where the runner allows, live experiments. Say which ones you actually ran. (a) extend bcvk to drive image-builder and hand the disk to libvirt/tmt (prior attempt: bootc-dev/bcvk#73); (b) run image-builder inside a bcvk ephemeral VM; (c) reuse the pattern of bootc's anaconda.rs test; (d) a GitHub runner with root; (e) a test fixture whose embedded repart.d definition requires a separate /boot, now that bootc-dev/bootc#2314 (systemd-repart install) has merged. That fixture covers the /boot layout but not image-builder itself. Take into account the rootless limits recorded in cgwalters-forge/tracker#105: `image-builder build --in-vm` moves only the image pipeline into the VM, and the selinux stage fails rootless. For each option give the cost, the root/nested-virt needs, and how much existing bcvk/tmt infrastructure it reuses. End with a recommendation and draft upstream issue text. Post it all as the run's comment on this issue; it stands in for the gist."

Recommendation: prototype image-builder running as root in a bcvk ephemeral builder VM, then add that as a bcvk disk-build backend with an explicit existing-disk → libvirt handoff. Run the resulting guests through bootc’s existing tmt connect flow. Do not treat image-builder build --in-vm as a rootless solution. A repart fixture is useful complementary layout coverage, not a substitute for exercising image-builder.

    What the sources establish

I read cgwalters’ request, bcvk#73’s actual patch, and the current implementations below. #73 is still an unmerged draft: it already runs bib inside an ephemeral VM, with shared input storage and writable output; its description reports an image-fetch failure. Thus (a) and (b) are an integrated product versus a prototype of largely the same architecture, not competing privilege models. Its hardcoded 20G builder memory and image-copy/storage setup also need revisiting, not blind revival. Use the current image-builder CLI, not simply its old bib invocation.

Bootc currently launches a new bcvk libvirt guest per plan, obtains SSH information, and calls tmt’s connect provisioner. The reusable boundary is that SSH connection, plus existing lifecycle/logging/cleanup. Neither libvirt run’s container-image input nor upload-disk is a ready-made arbitrary-qcow2 launch API: upload-disk takes a container and builds a disk itself. Importing the artifact while preserving SSH injection, metadata, firmware selection and cleanup is real work.

The current image-builder code still sets InVm = []string{"image"}. Tracker #105 records the separate host-side build-pipeline SELinux failure, and the HostTree.path failure when trying to put build in the VM too. I verified the pipeline selection in code; I did not reproduce those two stage failures here. Also scope the separate-/boot expectation to the GRUB/non-UKI case: current partition generation permits embedded layouts and deliberately removes default XBOOTLDR for UKIs. Don’t override partitioning in the image-builder lane intended to test defaults.

Options (costs are engineering/runtime estimates, not benchmark results)

Option Cost and privilege/virtualization requirements Reuse / coverage
    (a) Extend bcvk Medium–high engineering: modernize #73, reliable local-image transport/cache, disk import/clone, SSH and cleanup. Root in builder guest, not necessarily on CI host; KVM access and configured libvirt permissions. No second virtualization level inside that guest if image-builder runs normally there. If CI host is itself a VM, its ability to run KVM guests is already a nested-virt prerequisite. Highest long-term reuse of ephemeral builder, libvirt lifecycle, per-plan tmt, logs and image storage conventions. Covers CLI and real default disk.
    (b) image-builder in ephemeral VM Medium prototype cost, then disk handoff work remains. Export the PR-built image as an OCI archive, load into guest-local rootful storage, run privileged image-builder there, export qcow2 via shared output. Extra boot and image-copy/disk-cache space. Same guest-root/KVM needs as (a); do not add --in-vm inside the builder. Prefer guest-local working storage over depending on rootless host virtiofs to accept SELinux labels. Reuses bcvk execution/sharing immediately and tmt once the artifact is launched. #105 reports this workaround; not a fresh successful build in this run. Best first proof before committing to a public backend API.
    (c) anaconda.rs pattern Medium–high: reuse QEMU/virtiofs/serial/log monitoring but supply a builder OS and image-builder job, collect artifact, then launch test guest. Host privilege requirements of preparation still need validation; guest root solves the build privilege, KVM needed for practical speed, no inner VM required. ISO preparation/export adds avoidable work if copied literally. anaconda.rs actually installs an exported tarball using Anaconda liveimg and bcvk-qemu; it neither calls image-builder nor connects the installed disk to tmt. Reuse its orchestration ideas, not Anaconda’s layout as proof of image-builder defaults. Less libvirt/tmt lifecycle reuse than (a).
    (d) root GitHub runner Lowest build orchestration cost if a suitable runner exists: rootful privileged image-builder/container storage, then boot qcow2. No build VM/nesting needed for normal osbuild; KVM still needed for test guests, and hosted runner availability must be checked rather than assumed. Host SELinux policy and trusted PR isolation remain operational concerns. Root on the runner, not merely root inside a rootless container. Reuses tmt connect and potentially libvirt, but still needs artifact import/SSH/per-plan reset plumbing. Full CLI/default coverage. Good fallback on disposable, root-capable KVM runners, not an available privilege in this sandbox.
    (e) embedded repart fixture Low–medium layout-test cost, no image-builder compose overhead. Installer needs privilege, which can remain in the existing bcvk install VM; usual test KVM needs only. Explicitly enable --run-repart; adding definitions alone is insufficient. High reuse after installer-option plumbing; covers bootc on a separate /boot, not image-builder or its evolving defaults. #2314 merged Oct 1, but there are important current limitations below.

For (e), baseline.rs recognizes Type=xbootldr as the boot partition, but generic-image filters repart to root/ESP/BIOS, omitting XBOOTLDR. bcvk to-disk uses --generic-image, so this is not a drop-in fixture in that path. Either avoid that mode for the fixture or fix/extend the required-partition filtering and forward the repart option. Validate GRUB/composefs mount behavior end-to-end, not just partition presence. The existing repart test explicitly invokes repart and checks disk layout; it is not evidence that a separate-/boot fixture already boots through bcvk.

    Live experiments actually run

This sandbox has working rootless Podman (SELinux disabled), readable/writable /dev/kvm, no installed bcvk or image-builder executable, and sudo -n true is denied. I pulled ghcr.io/osbuild/image-builder-cli (digest sha256:98b1e2f70a0df78baaef727098fb1153ea52fb7cd336ecd45a4cc14bab5e418c) and successfully ran its build --help rootless/privileged, confirming the CLI flags. Then I attempted:

    image-builder build --in-vm --bootc-ref quay.io/centos-bootc/centos-bootc:stream10 --bootc-pull-container --bootc-default-fs ext4 --output-dir /tmp/bootc-ci-probe qcow2

Invoked via rootless podman run --rm --privileged --network=host with the sandbox proxy CA mounted; it exited 1 before pipeline execution: chcon ... /var/cache/image-builder/store ... Operation not permitted / entrypoint setup failed. Retrying with explicit /usr/bin/image-builder entrypoint gave the same failure. This is an additional early rootless barrier in the pulled image, not a reproduction of #105’s selinux stage failure and not proof that every rootless host fails identically. No disk was built, no tmt guest ran, and none of (a)–(e) was successfully exercised end-to-end. These local command results are recorded here as the run log; I have no separate public build log to link.

Proposed next step / draft upstream issue

Recommend (b) → (a): first demonstrate a rootful in-guest CLI build of the actual CI image and a tmt smoke test on its output, then make the backend/import boundary reusable. Add (e) separately for fast layout regression coverage once the filtering/option gaps are resolved.

Title: CI: run tmt on image-builder CLI default disks

Draft body: Our tmt provisioning currently installs through bcvk/bootc, so it does not test image-builder’s default disk layout, notably separate /boot for GRUB images (bootc#2516). Add an opt-in lane that runs the current image-builder CLI as root inside a bcvk ephemeral builder, transfers the locally built CI container through an OCI archive into guest storage, and imports the resulting qcow2 into libvirt. Keep image-builder partition defaults unmodified; inject only test access/required runtime settings. Reuse existing tmt connect, log collection and cleanup, with an immutable base disk and a fresh writable disk per plan.

Acceptance: build the PR’s image (not a registry substitute), retain image-builder version/digest, manifest and build log; assert /boot is a distinct filesystem on the GRUB guest; run booted smoke plus composefs upgrade/rollback/reboot coverage; preserve the expected UKI layout separately; prove cancellation cleans builder and test guests and that disk reset prevents cross-plan state. Do not rely on --in-vm to fix rootless host build stages (#105). Start with a prototype and measured memory/disk/time requirements; track a repart-only fixture as complementary bootc layout coverage, not completion of this issue.

Done: close as completed. This issue asked for research and nothing else: a comparison of ways to build bootc's tmt test disks with the image-builder CLI, a recommendation and draft issue text. The research run on 17 Oct (run) posted all of that in #233 (comment). The plan it ran from said that comment would stand in for the gist.

That comment has each part the issue asked for:

    • Comparison: a table of options (a) to (e). They are: extend bcvk (cf. bcvk#73), image-builder in a bcvk ephemeral VM, the anaconda.rs pattern, a root GitHub runner, and the repart.d fixture made possible by bootc#2314. For each it gives the cost, what root and KVM it needs, and what it reuses. Its sources are pinned to commits.
    • Recommendation: (b) then (a). First prove that image-builder, run as root inside a bcvk ephemeral builder, can build the disk and that tmt runs on it through connect. Then turn that into a bcvk backend. Treat (e) as extra layout coverage only. It also notes that --generic-image drops XBOOTLDR, so the bcvk to-disk path cannot use the fixture as it is.
    • Draft issue text: a title and body with acceptance criteria.
    • Live experiments: the comment says which ones ran. A rootless image-builder build --in-vm stopped early on chcon in this sandbox, so no disk was built end to end.

Since then (checked 22 Oct), nobody has filed the draft as an issue in bootc-dev/bootc or bootc-dev/bcvk, and the comment has had no replies or reactions. Two things are left, and neither is part of this issue. Filing the draft upstream, and choosing to fund the (b) prototype, are cgwalters' decisions. If either is wanted, it should get its own board item: the prototype needs a runner with KVM where it can be root inside the guest, and this hosted sandbox could not show that path working.

This run can't close issues (its only allowed output is a comment), so an operator or the next board pass needs to close it.
