Service will be used to crowdsource discovery of particular feature types using satellite imagery based on predefined tile like structure. The discovery process is useful in the preparation/planning phases for projects like HOT Tasking Manager, as it enables to narrow/specialize work area. It could also be useful for general feature discovery tasks. For example, you could setup a task 'discover forested areas in Egypt', so anyone can click through some tasks. Service could also be used to validate finished tasks on the Tasking Manager.
Discovery process is an iterative process based on asking users a simple questions. For example, on the first iteration, user could only answer either yes or no for a question "Does the area contain man-made structures?". On the second iteration for areas with positive answers, users would be presented with smaller areas and could either be asked a simple yes/no question, or a more detailed 'On a scale 1-5 how much area is covered by man-made structures?'
Users are authorized using OSM OAuth API. Internally some of the users are designated as admin users, other are normal users.
Admin users can create new projects and a project consists of a:
- name
- project area
- predefined project theme (man-made structures, infrastructure)
- starting zoom level
- number of iterations and questions for each iteration (simple workflow management)
- any custom map layers, relevant for the project, shown as one of the base map layers
- basic information about the projects, status, completion
- user can select a project to work on
- download a geographical union of validated project tasks in common geographical data formats
- user is presented with a single random task(tile) to evaluate
- tile is shown on a plethora of base maps (possibly side-by-side)
- user can click one of the big buttons to answer the question
Service will have an API to enable integration with other projects.
- integrate OSM Overpass API to pre-discover if required features are already present and create a service 'confidence' level, if the confidence level is above some threshold level, move those tasks to the second iteration phase
