feat: Add multimodal image support#46
Conversation
- Auto-detect and load images from prompts
- Support local files, URLs, and multiple formats (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP)
- Preserve images during MIPROv2 optimization via ImageAwareLM
- Fully backward compatible with text-only workflows
- Add comprehensive test suite (18 tests, 100% pass rate)
- Add detailed documentation and usage examples
Key Changes:

- MIPROv2 format support ([][path])
- Feature flag for disabling image support
- Graceful degradation without PIL/requests

What's the purpose of this bedrock proxy client and endpoint? It seems dynamically loading bedrock client from bedrock_proxy_client.py file.

nit: I prefer set default value of enable_image_support to False and user should manually specify it to True if they want to enable image support as an add-on.

nit: I prefer we either directly show full user_content in the debug log or simply not show it. Truncating only first 100 element might makes confusion.

I think this will check if stripped is one of the ['[input]', '{input}', '{{input}}', '[[input]]'] (e.g. stripped = '[input]'). Rather than checking if [input] or other pattern in stripped.
But I guess you actually want to check the 2nd scenario right? In that case, I think we should do something like:
patterns = ['[input]', '{input}', '{{input}}', '[[input]]']
stripped = "Analyze this image for watermarks: {input}"
result = any(pattern in stripped for pattern in patterns)

Address all 4 reviewer comments from ericgaoyh:
- Remove bedrock proxy client code (dev artifact, not for library)
- Change enable_image_support default to False (opt-in, not opt-out)
- Fix debug log truncation (show full user_content, not [:100])
- Fix template variable check bug (use 'in' substring check, not equality)
Implement proper multimodal architecture across all 4 layers:
- BedrockConverseHandler: add _build_content_blocks() dispatcher that
handles bytes (raw image), dict (structured multimodal), and str
(plain text / legacy path detection). Add _bytes_to_image_block()
helper for clean Bedrock image block construction.
- PromptAdapter: add image_variables param to set_user_prompt() so
callers can declare which variables carry image data. Stored in
standardized prompt under 'image_variables' key.
- DatasetAdapter: add image_columns param. _standardize_row() loads
image file paths as raw bytes at adapt time. split() propagates
image_columns to child adapters.
- InferenceRunner: _format_template() uses placeholder for image vars
instead of stringifying bytes. _create_messages() builds structured
{'text': ..., 'image_bytes': ...} dict when image bytes present.
- BedrockInferenceAdapter: expose enable_image_support param, thread
through to BedrockConverseHandler.
- Fix miprov2_optimizer.py: remove raw boto3.client() call, use
inference_adapter directly via BedrockAdapterLM.
Add comprehensive tests:
- test_bedrock_converse.py: image support opt-in/out, _build_content_blocks
- test_dataset_adapter.py: image_columns loading, split propagation
- test_prompt_adapter.py: image_variables validation and storage
- test_multimodal_e2e.py: 21 end-to-end tests covering full pipeline
from DatasetAdapter through InferenceRunner to Bedrock API (mocked)
All 161 tests pass.

Thanks for the thorough review @ericgaoyh! Addressed all 4 comments in the latest commit:
Reviewer comments resolved:
Removed the BEDROCK_PROXY_ENDPOINT / bedrock_proxy_client.py code entirely — this was dev scaffolding that shouldn't have been included in the library.
Changed enable_image_support default to False — image support is now opt-in as suggested.
Fixed the debug log truncation — removed [:100] so the full user_content is logged.
Fixed the template variable check bug — changed stripped in [...] to any(pattern in stripped for pattern in template_patterns) so patterns embedded in longer strings like "Analyze this image: {input}" are correctly detected.
Additionally, implemented the proper multimodal architecture that was missing from the original approach (string pattern matching was fragile and incomplete):
DatasetAdapter — added image_columns param. Image file paths are loaded as raw bytes at adapt() time, so the inference layer never needs to guess whether a string is a path.
PromptAdapter — added image_variables param to set_user_prompt(). Callers explicitly declare which variables carry image data. Stored in the standardized prompt.
InferenceRunner — image variables are substituted with a placeholder in the formatted text (not stringified bytes). Image bytes are passed as a structured {"text": ..., "image_bytes": ...} dict to the converse handler.
BedrockConverseHandler — replaced the string-pattern heuristic with a clean _build_content_blocks() dispatcher that handles bytes, structured dict, and str as distinct cases. Added _bytes_to_image_block() helper.
BedrockInferenceAdapter — enable_image_support is now a proper constructor param, threaded through cleanly.
All 161 tests pass including 21 new end-to-end tests in
test_multimodal_e2e.py
that verify the full pipeline from DatasetAdapter → PromptAdapter → InferenceRunner → BedrockConverseHandler → mocked Bedrock API.
Restore adapter.py to abstract base class only (matching main), keeping to_dspy_lm() method. Move BedrockInferenceAdapter back to bedrock_adapter.py with enable_image_support param added. Fix miprov2_optimizer.py imports: remove unused ImageAwareLM import, restore DEFAULT_PROMPT_MODEL to nova-2-lite-v1:0. Update test imports and mock patch paths to reference bedrock_adapter module instead of adapter module.

Add Multimodal Image Support for Bedrock Converse API
Summary
This PR adds automatic image loading and multimodal support to Nova Prompt Optimizer, enabling prompt optimization for vision tasks like image classification, OCR, watermark detection, and visual question answering.
Problem Statement
Nova Prompt Optimizer previously only supported text-based prompts, limiting its use for multimodal models that can process images. Users working with vision tasks had no way to:
