alfiethology/README.md
  • Hi, I’m @alfiethology, a PhD researcher at the University of Bristol studying animal behaviour. I work on space and resource use in laying hens and utilize the latest animal tracking software such as YOLOv26 by ultralytics, and P2PNet (https://github.com/TencentYoutuResearch/CrowdCounting-P2PNet)
  • 👀 I’m also interested in tracking and monitoring wild bird visitation at bird feeders using Raspberry Pi based apparatus fit with HQ cameras, weighing scales, and automated cognitive tests.
  • 🌱 I’m currently learning how to use Gaussian mixture models to quantify the space-use of hens on egg farms and in an experimental poultry unit before and after the hens are subjected to supplementary ultra-violet lighting.
  • I 3D print my own equipment including camera cases and a cognitive bias apparatus used on wild Grey Squirrel in Exeter UK.
  • I have also built a device for automatically rolling pigs from the table top strategy game 'Pass The Pigs', which utilizes a YOLO26m object detection model to automatically log which position the pigs land in. It uses a solenoid motor to hit the bottom of the arena surface which makes them jump in an apparently random way. invalid rolls are ommited from the dataset by way of a semantic segmentation model which detects the edges of the playing surface making it possible to know if a pig has landed against the wall or indeed is touching another pig which would also mean the roll is ommited from the dataset. The device can roll 2 pigs at a rate of 1.67 rolls per second.
  • I have also done a lot of work to improve https://github.com/wkentaro/labelme for my own research. By adding features like instant custom model inference, pose estimation and oriented bounding box annotation. My fork can be found here: https://github.com/alfiethology/labelme
