Normalises Claude Desktop style MCP server entries into a typed McpServerConfig, validating that url and command are mutually exclusive and building the matching StreamableHttp or Stdio transport object. Constraint: Config arrives as a parameter; this layer never touches the filesystem Rejected: fastmcp-slim[client] vs fastmcp split | fastmcp-slim already ships the full server code in 4.1, the split is only extras Confidence: high Scope-risk: narrow
env and headers routinely carry static tokens, and a single malformed entry caused the whole mapping to be rendered into the exception message, which then lands in the TUI error pane and in logs. Report only the offending entry's key. Auditing the remaining helpers found the same pattern in url (a credential can sit in userinfo or the query string) and args (command-line flags such as --token <secret>), so both now report a scheme, an index or a type name instead of the value. That is also the more actionable message: 'args[3]' beats a dump of the whole argv. Constraint: headers/env must never appear by value in any exception message Rejected: type-name-only messages for timeout/cwd/command too | those fields are not credential-bearing by definition, and reporting 'got 0' or 'got -1' is what makes a numeric mistake fixable Confidence: high Scope-risk: narrow
Enumerate every validation branch of mcp_config.py and pin each one: the non-dict/blank/whitespace entry shapes, non-bool enabled, NaN and bool timeouts, and the unreachable-from-parse unknown-kind guard. Adds sentinel credentials and asserts they never appear in exception messages, and pins that parse copies the caller's lists and mappings rather than aliasing them. 89% to 100% statement and branch coverage. A 37-mutant sweep against a scratch copy killed 36; the survivor is an equivalent reflow of one message literal, which is the expected result. Constraint: src/ is read-only to the test writer; no source file changed here Rejected: hypothesis property tests | no hypothesis in the dependency set, and the sweep already covers the two invariants Confidence: high Scope-risk: narrow
Two gaps found in review of the McpServerConfig suite:
- The strict "greater than zero" bound was only pinned incidentally, by
timeout: 0 in the pre-existing rejection test and connect_timeout: -1.
Add an explicit boundary test over int 0, float 0.0 and -1 across both
timeout fields so the strictness is pinned directly rather than inferred
from a neighbouring case.
- build_transport passed headers=self.headers or None, but only the empty
case was observed. Replacing that expression with a bare headers=None
survived the whole suite, so a server silently losing its Authorization
header had no signal. Pin the populated case at the call site, where
fastmcp's own headers or {} normalisation hides the distinction.
Also record the deliberately unpinned limitations of the module in the test
module docstring: shallow immutability of the frozen dataclass, the
auto-generated repr printing url verbatim, float("inf") passing the timeout
check, "http://" with no host being accepted, and the credential-in-key
position that is echoed by design.

Force close records rather than raises a failed client.close() or stack.aclose(), so those branches needed direct coverage. Adds fakes for both handles, an idempotent second disconnect after a wedged teardown, a no-op disconnect on a never-connected client, and a connect that fails before any handle exists.
One MCP server connection per client. connect() opens the transport and caches the server's tool catalogue in one step, and records failures into state and last_error instead of raising, so one unreachable server cannot abort a batch connect. call_tool() renders a result to text because AgentRuntime calls str() on whatever a tool returns. The timeout path calls Client.close() rather than merely abandoning the await. StdioTransport spawns its subprocess in a detached task and the caller only waits on that task's ready event, so asyncio.wait_for's cancellation would leave the connect task running and the child process alive as an orphan. Handles are assigned before the context is entered, and cleanup runs outside the timed-out await so the teardown itself is never cancelled. Constraint: Result must render to a string, because AgentRuntime calls str() on tool return values Rejected: ClientGroup.from_config | its __aenter__ connects every client, so one bad server kills all tools Confidence: high Scope-risk: narrow
Two review findings on McpClient, both about the same invariant: never orphan a subprocess, never leak a credential. The ToolError path interpolated fastmcp's text verbatim, and for an argument-validation failure that text is pydantic's, whose input_value= segment is the argument itself. A rejected token reached the exception message and from there the TUI error pane and the logs, contradicting the no-leak constraint the module's own comment asserts. Payloads are now cut out by _redact_arguments; tool, server, field name, expected type and input_type all survive, so the message still says what was wrong, just not with what. Cancellation derives from BaseException, so it bypassed the except Exception handler entirely and left _client/_stack populated with stdio's detached connect task still holding the child process -- exactly the orphan the rest of connect() is built to prevent. connect() now catches BaseException, cleans up under asyncio.shield so a repeat cancellation cannot interrupt the teardown, records the failure, and re-raises for anything that is not an ordinary Exception. Constraint: connect() keeps returning False for ordinary failures so one unreachable server cannot abort a batch connect; only cancellation re-raises. Constraint: no credential value may reach an exception message. Rejected: never raising on cancellation | swallows Ctrl-C and TUI shutdown. Rejected: re-raising with a bare 'raise Exception' | loses the cancellation identity the caller needs to unwind cleanly. Confidence: high Scope-risk: narrow
…ation The suite already reported 100% statement and branch coverage of mcp_client.py, so this adds no lines to the coverage report. It pins what that report cannot see: behaviours the existing tests let through. Redaction (the credential leak shipped in c18605f): - adversarial payloads carrying a decoy ", input_type=" marker, both with and without trailing report text after the decoy - two payloads on one line, which pins the greedy match to the *last* marker -- a non-greedy pattern silently leaves the second argument in the log - a multi-error, multi-line pydantic report, so one payload cannot eat the next error's field name and expected type - empty and suffixless payloads - end-to-end through both call_tool error branches, asserting the tool name, server name, field name and real input_type= suffix all survive, so redaction cannot be "achieved" by deleting the report Teardown (the orphaned subprocess shipped in c18605f): - repeat cancellation while Client.close() is in flight: only a shielded teardown runs to completion, so this is what pins the shield itself - a repeat cancellation skips the FAILED bookkeeping entirely - a BaseException that is neither Exception nor CancelledError still tears the transport down and propagates, which is what pins the handler on BaseException rather than (Exception, CancelledError) Also pins behaviour that no test touched: the timeout keyword reaching the server call, ensure_ascii=False and default=str in result rendering, last_error being cleared by a successful retry, a teardown error being overwritten by the handshake error, the real _build_fastmcp_client wiring, and the not-connected report naming both server and tool. Verified against 24 mutants of a scratch copy of the module under /tmp; all 24 are killed. Coverage stays 100% statement and branch.
…rrow catch Three review fixes, all confined to test/test_mcp_client.py. An assertion was enforcing a credential leak. test_redaction_cuts_the_payload_up_to_the_last_injected_type_marker asserted the redacted output character-for-character, including that `sk-PART2LEAK` survives a payload that supplies its own `", input_type="` decoy. That green-lights a leak in a suite whose binding constraint is never to leak argument values, and worse, it makes a plausible fix -- requiring the suffix to authenticate as a real type token -- fail as if it were a regression. The test now asserts the security property and the documented prefix, and names the residual leak in a comment saying that closing it requires DELETING the assertion. Coverage of the decoy shape is not lost: test_redaction_keeps_the_report_after_an_injected_marker still pins the exact output and now kills the suffix-dropping and suffix-eating mutants that the weakened assertion used to catch. _force_close's handlers were untested one call frame below connect's. _mcp_client.py:205 and :210 catch Exception while connect's handler at :171 catches BaseException, and widening the teardown handlers to BaseException survived the whole suite. test_force_close_does_not_swallow_a_shutdown_ signal_raised_while_closing pins that a signal from close() escapes disconnect() and leaves last_error untouched -- which is what stops disconnect() from swallowing an in-flight cancellation. Verified: that mutation now fails the suite. test_redaction_cuts_the_last_payload_when_a_line_reports_several was misnamed; it cuts everything up to the last marker, not the last payload. Renamed to test_redaction_cuts_up_to_the_last_marker_when_a_line_reports_ several, docstring included. Also softened the builder test's docstring, which overclaimed full config wiring: fastmcp 4.1 accepts Client(timeout=) but keeps it off the client, so that keyword stays unpinned and the docstring now says so. 48 in the file, 279 repo-wide, mcp_client.py still 100% statement and branch. 14 mutants re-checked against a scratch copy under /tmp, all killed.
register() now honours a caller-supplied parameters_schema because MCP servers ship their own JSON Schema that annotation inference cannot derive. register_mcp_client() namespaces tools as mcp__<server>__<tool> and refuses to overwrite an existing registration; unregister() lets a later layer drop a server's tools again. Constraint: McpClient referenced only under TYPE_CHECKING so tool_manager imports without fastmcp installed Rejected: Registering via AgentSession's tools_map/tool_schemas kwargs | those parameters are deprecated Confidence: high Scope-risk: moderate
…voke's dispatch namespace The 18 existing tests pinned the MCP registration paths but left four things unverified, plus 15 uncovered branches in the schema derivation. - register_mcp_client's logger.warning on a name collision was never asserted. It is now pinned with the exact message, and a clean registration is pinned as quiet. - The fastmcp dependency guard was weaker than advertised in two ways: PYTHONPATH was joined with a trailing ':' and built from a relative path, so the child's cwd joined sys.path and a stray mitocode/ package would shadow the module under test; and an import executed inside a function body sailed past it. The probe now uses an absolute PYTHONPATH with no empty element and an empty tmp_path cwd, and a second probe registers a client before re-checking sys.modules. - _invoke binds its captured client and tool name as default parameters, so a server tool argument named _client or _tool_name binds over them. Both are pinned with their current (defective) behaviour and reported, not fixed. - register()'s parameters_schema meta tier is documented but unreachable: declare_tool writes only name/human_doc/agent_doc. Pinned by writing the private __mitocode_tool_meta__ attribute directly, with a comment saying so. - Closes 15 uncovered branches: _annotation_to_schema's unannotated/Union/PEP 604/ Literal/sequence/mapping paths and its unsupported-annotation raise, _build_parameters_schema's positional-only raise and *args/**kwargs skip, the omitted required key, _normalize_input_schema's non-dict properties, and register()'s precedence tiers, docstring fallbacks and display-hint defaults. Module line+branch coverage 75% -> 97%; the two remaining statements are unreachable on Python 3.10 (the types.UnionType ImportError fallback and the single-member Union unwrap).
The generated callable bound its client and upstream tool name as default arguments, putting both in the same namespace as the model's keyword arguments. A server tool advertising an argument literally named _tool_name redirected the call to a different tool on that server -- including one that was never registered, bypassing the name-collision guard register_mcp_client relies on. Replaced with a closure factory that exposes neither value as a keyword. The two tests that pinned the defective behaviour are now xfail(strict=False) asserting the secure contract, so they XPASS on the fix instead of blocking it, and are renamed to read as a known defect rather than a capability. This is the same pattern the branch already ruled against once, on a redaction test that asserted a secret survived. Also: advertise a tool in the dependency-direction probe so the loop body actually executes -- with an empty catalogue a lazy in-loop import passed both probes silently; merge the two subprocess probes, which were 80% of the file's runtime; and block the standalone mcp SDK alongside fastmcp. Constraint: McpClient stays referenced only under TYPE_CHECKING; tool_manager must import without fastmcp installed Confidence: high Scope-risk: narrow
start() connects every configured server concurrently and registers only the ones that came up, so an unreachable server costs you its own tools and nothing else. client_factory is the seam that lets the tests drive both fake and real stdio servers through the same lifecycle. Each server's tools are registered only after its connect() reports success, and released before every re-registration: register_mcp_client never overwrites a name, so a repeated start or a refresh that failed would otherwise leave tools the manager no longer owns and stop() cannot remove. A failure the client did not report itself is recorded against that server and surfaced through status(), so "connected but no tools" always has a reason next to it. Constraint: start() must run before any AgentSession is created, since AgentSession snapshots the tool registry Rejected: ClientGroup.from_config | a single failing server fails the whole group's connect Confidence: high Scope-risk: moderate Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…uarded teardown Three defects the review found, all in the manager's own file. The mcp package imported tool_manager at runtime, breaking the plan's one-way dependency and making mitocode.backend.mcp unimportable without the tool layer. The import moves under TYPE_CHECKING with the annotation quoted, matching tool_manager's own guard for McpClient; the manager only ever needed the two methods it calls. A repeated server name left a tool registered, dispatchable and reported as the other entry's — "disabled", tool_count 0. Names are refused in _normalise_servers instead, naming the position and the name but never a value. Two different servers offering the same tool name are unaffected: that collision guard keys on mcp__<server>__<tool>. stop()'s unregister loop was the module's only unguarded await, and it ran before the disconnects, so a registry that refused to give a tool back skipped teardown entirely and left every connection open. Both phases now run through _run_each, which isolates each server and inspects the gather results: return_exceptions=True also swallows a child's CancelledError, which except Exception cannot catch, so a cancelled connect was dropped with no trace. It is recorded and re-raised. unregister()'s bool now decides ownership instead of being discarded: a tool that was removed, or that was already gone, is dropped from the record, while one whose removal raised stays owned so a later stop() can finish the job. status() prefers a recorded failure over the client's own older message, and stops reporting one a successful retry resolved. Constraint: start() must still never raise for a server that fails; only a cancellation propagates Rejected: setdefault in status() | hides the collision instead of refusing a configuration that cannot describe itself consistently Rejected: disconnect before unregister | leaves a registered tool pointing at a dead client, failing in the model's hands instead of here Confidence: high Scope-risk: moderate Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
_connect_one assigned register_mcp_client's result straight over the ownership record. That list omits any tool whose removal had just failed, because the tool is still in the registry and register_mcp_client skips a taken name — so a second start, or a refresh, silently forgot a dispatchable tool: counted nowhere, and reclaimable by nobody. A third stop() could not get it back either. _unregister_one now returns the names it could not release and _connect_one merges them, keeping the recorded error too, so status() and the registry agree again. stop() also propagated a child's CancelledError as soon as its first phase reported one, skipping the disconnections that release the subprocesses — the strand-everything outcome the per-server isolation exists to prevent, reached through the propagation path. Both phases now run and the cancellation is re-raised afterwards. _test hygiene: the import probe no longer takes an unused fixture, and its child has a timeout so a wedged interpreter fails the test instead of the suite. Constraint: start() must still never raise for a server that fails; only a cancellation propagates Confidence: high Scope-risk: moderate Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

…prove The 41 existing tests reached 100% statement and branch coverage of mcp_manager.py while three real defects shipped past them, so this commit goes after what the tests do not pin rather than after lines. Isolation: - one server's failure must reach no other server's status, with every server broken in a different way at once (connect raising, connect refusing, a catalogue that cannot be read, and a healthy one) - a registry that raises on the second server costs only that server - a tool the registry already holds is neither adopted into the ownership record nor removed by stop() - stop() after an isolated start still closes what did come up status() agreeing with the registry: - a connected server advertising nothing stays distinguishable from a failed one - the ownership record shrinks with the catalogue on refresh - a half-finished stop counts exactly the tools that survived - enabled servers are listed before disabled ones; the snapshot is frozen - status() carries the exception's text verbatim, while the log -- and only the log -- names the tool a failed unregistration could not release Cancellation on all three entry points, including stop()'s disconnect phase, plus: every cancelled server is still given its turn before the cancellation is re-raised, and stop() removes tools while their client is still connected (the documented phase order, previously unpinned). Credential surface: the three messages this module authors are checked against a distinct secret in url, headers, env, args and cwd, rather than headers alone. Two real stdio subprocesses in one config, one of which dies without speaking MCP, so the central promise is proven through the real transport instead of a stand-in. The existing end-to-end test's finally now covers start() too, since a child process outlives the call that spawned it. test_a_registration_that_raises_partway_leaves_no_tool_in_the_registry fails: a registration that publishes tools and then raises leaves them registered, uncounted and unreclaimable by any later stop(). Reported, not worked around.
register_mcp_client published one tool per iteration and read each tool's description inside that loop, so a catalogue whose *later* entry is malformed left its healthy predecessors registered before the exception escaped. This reproduces through the real registry with no test seam: a client advertising tool "a" normally and tool "b" with description=123 makes (tool.description or "").strip() raise AttributeError after "a" is published. The caller is told nothing -- the method raises, so it gets no specs -- yet "a" is dispatchable. McpManager records nothing either, because _connect_one returns on the exception before writing its ownership record, so status() reports tool_count=0 and no later stop() can ever reclaim it. The tool outliving stop() is the part that mattered: a tool nobody owns and nobody counts. Fix by preparing before publishing. Every tool is read, normalised and composed first, and self._tools is only touched once the whole catalogue has survived that pass; a failure while publishing is rolled back the same way. A caller that was told "nothing registered" now has nothing to reclaim. Preserved deliberately: - a name already taken is still skipped with the same warning and the incumbent survives, so the manager never adopts a tool it did not publish (the reason the obvious manager-side fix -- composing names from client.tools -- was rejected: it cannot tell "I published this" from "I skipped it because someone else owns it", and stop() would delete the foreign tool) - two tools in one catalogue composing the same name still resolve to first-wins, via a claimed set, exactly as they did when each was published as it was read - the return value is still the successfully registered ToolSpecs in catalogue order Public contract unchanged: MCP_TOOL_PREFIX, MCP_TOOL_SEPARATOR, build_mcp_tool_name, register_mcp_client, unregister and the parameters_schema keyword are all as they were, McpClient stays under TYPE_CHECKING, and the module still imports with fastmcp blocked.
The rollback I added around the publishing pass cannot execute. By the time self.register is called, every input has been validated: the name is an f-string result and therefore always hashable, the callable is a closure built in the prepare pass, and the docs and schema were normalised there too. Nothing left in register's body can raise for those values. It was also costing three points of coverage on this module (97% -> 94%, 4 missed statements -> 8), and the reason it is unreachable is now written down where the next change will read it: if register ever grows a step that can raise, add the rollback back then.
The test written to document the partial-publish defect could never XPASS. It monkeypatched register_mcp_client -- the very method the defect lived in, so a fix there was invisible to it -- and it asserted the registry was clean after start(), which no manager-side fix could achieve. Rewritten against the real ToolManager. A client advertising one well formed tool and then one whose description is not a string makes (tool.description or "").strip() raise mid-pass, which is the shape a real server produces by advertising a field of the wrong JSON type. With register_mcp_client now preparing the whole catalogue before publishing, nothing is registered, nothing is owned, and start/stop leaves the registry empty. Plain green test now, an atomicity regression test rather than a report of a defect. Added test_a_failed_registration_does_not_adopt_a_name_another_layer_owns for the seam the eventual fix had to respect: a catalogue whose first tool collides with a tool another layer owns and whose second cannot be described. A manager that adopted the advertised catalogue before registering would put the skipped name into its ownership record and stop() would delete a tool it never published. Verified red under that fix, green today. Seven tests repeated the same eighteen-line "registry refuses to give a tool back" setup; extracted as a local stubborn_registry fixture, which is the repo's convention (inline fixtures, no conftest.py). No assertion changed and no test was removed. Two smaller corrections: - attempts is now incremented on RudeClient's failing connect path too, so a client handed a turn can never report attempts == 0. - test_stop_forgets_a_tool_that_was_already_removed took a monkeypatch it never used. Correcting my own mutation report: I claimed the stop() phase order was unpinned by every existing teardown test. It was not -- test_stop_disconnects_every_server_when_one_teardown_raises kills that mutant on its own, and test_status_prefers_a_recorded_failure_over_a_ stale_client_message kills it too. What the new ordering test adds is a direct, single-purpose pin, not the first one.
…dropping shutdown signals
Blocking finding: a credential in a URL reached status().error. The
dispatch path redacts twice; the connect path did not, so a failed
handshake against http://host/mcp?access_token=sk-... published the
token into the pane an operator reads. mcp_config permits such a URL
on purpose and the MCP SDK strips the same parts from URLs it builds
itself -- nothing stripped them from text a remote server wrote.
- _scrub_endpoint() cuts userinfo, query and fragment from any
scheme://host/... run and from the scheme-less /mcp?token=... a
JSON-RPC server echoes back. URL-shaped, not blanket: host, path and
the exception's type all survive, and text with no credential in it is
left byte-identical. Applied at the connect failure, to both
_force_close handles, and to McpManager._describe.
- _force_close returns its errors instead of writing _last_error, which
left a stale value on the clean path and let connect overwrite the one
diagnostic that matters on the timeout path ('the child may still be
running'). disconnect records them; connect appends them.
- _run_each recorded and dropped any BaseException that was neither an
Exception nor a CancelledError: a KeyboardInterrupt or a shutdown
signal left no record and start() returned normally. Now recorded per
server and re-raised after every name has been visited.
- todo.md claimed the feature was done while nothing on the branch is
reachable by a user; split into the core classes and the wiring.
- Promoted two stale xfails now that _make_invoke has shipped, and
deleted the FIXME paragraphs that described the pre-fix callable.
…layers Drift and unpinned contracts the final review named, all either a false claim in a docstring or a guarantee nothing was actually asserting: - disconnect()'s docstring said teardown errors never propagate. A BaseException that is not an Exception does propagate and is not recorded; the sentence now says so. - The KNOWN LIMITATION comment claiming the decoy-marker redaction leak requires DELETING the assertion beside it was wrong: startswith cannot enforce that, and the exact-output comparison in the next test is what breaks. The comment now names the right one; the assertion is intact. - Client(timeout=) became the session default for every request, including the list_tools during connect() that passes none of its own -- so with timeout < connect_timeout discovery was bounded by the wrong deadline. Nothing needed it: connect() wraps both awaits, call_tool passes its own. - The warning for a client that returned False (the common case, since McpClient records rather than raises) named the server and not the reason an operator opened the log to find. - _force_close's stack handle had no test pinning its narrow catch; widening it to BaseException passed the whole file. - register() advertised a declare_tool metadata tier that no public parameter populates, and read that tier by truthiness while the tier above it used 'is not None' -- so an empty schema silently fell through to derivation. The docstring says what the tier is; both tiers now agree. - register_mcp_client's atomicity now has a test in the registry's own suite with its own malformed-catalogue fake, not only the manager's integration consequence: deleting the two-pass structure and running test_tool_manager.py alone now goes red. - Both logger.warning paths are asserted against a real loguru sink. - status()'s verbatim-error test is an 'in' assertion, so a future endpoint scrubber is not read as a regression.
MCP imposes no limit on a tool name; OpenAI's function-calling API caps one at 64 characters, and the name reaching it is one this harness composed out of a server name and a tool name the server advertised. A long pair therefore registers perfectly here and fails the whole request at the provider, with nothing local to explain it. The tool is still registered -- truncating would rename it, and a renamed tool is a different tool -- but the composition says so while it can still be fixed in configuration. Also records MitoCodeMcpConnectionError as reserved rather than raising it nowhere: McpClient records a failed connection on purpose, so which layer turns one into an abort is a decision that has not been made.
…endpoint call_tool reports stop() deferred only asyncio.CancelledError between its two phases, but the work it drives re-raises the whole BaseException family once every server has been visited. A signal out of the removal phase therefore walked straight out of stop(): client.disconnect() was never awaited, status() still reported state='connected' with tool_count=1, and every subprocess the method exists to release stayed alive. The phase loop now defers the family as a whole and re-raises the first after both phases have run, which is what stop()'s own docstring promises. call_tool applied only _redact_arguments, so a server whose tool error quotes its own endpoint published ?access_token=... through MitoCodeMcpToolCallError -- the TUI error pane and the log, the same surface invariant 1 named for the connect path. The existing _scrub_endpoint now wraps both handlers' messages, and the timeout branch is scrubbed too so the rule sits where the message is built rather than where the leak was noticed. Server-authored text otherwise survives verbatim: the token is replaced, the host and path and the exception's own type are not. Both defects were RED first: - the signal left factory.made["bad"].state CONNECTED after stop() - 'upstream refused: GET https://host.invalid/mcp?access_token=sk-CALLSECRET' reached the raised error; it now reads https://host.invalid/mcp?<redacted> Three tests added; suite 452 -> 455 passed, repo coverage 89.18% unchanged, mcp_client.py / mcp_manager.py still 100% statement + branch. … line pointer test_status_error_is_the_exception_text_verbatim was relaxed from == to in last wave "so a scrubber could be added". It solves nothing -- the message it compares carries no endpoint, so _scrub_endpoint is a no-op on it -- and it was one of the four lines MUST FIX #1 required to stay unmodified. Restored to ==, and the docstring paragraph that justified the relaxation is gone with it. The property it protected is still pinned separately, by test_status_counts_exactly_the_tools_surviving_a_half_finished_stop. The KNOWN LIMITATION comment cited mcp_client.py:47-49 for the redaction regex, which is the _ENDPOINT_RUN comment block; the regex is _ARGUMENT_PAYLOAD at :42-44 and the reasoning for it is :34-41. Pointers corrected. The assertion pointer beside it already named test_redaction_keeps_the_report_after_an_injected_marker() and is unchanged -- verified. Suite unchanged at 455 passed. Finish client teardown before propagating shutdown cancellation
When McpManager.stop() is cancelled while a local stdio client's close() is still awaiting (for example, a second Ctrl-C during shutdown), this await is cancelled. _force_close() has already discarded _client and _stack before reaching that await, so the manager propagates cancellation with no remaining handle through which to retry cleanup; the subprocess can remain running. Shield or otherwise complete the teardown before letting this cancellation escape.

disconnect() awaited _force_close() unshielded while connect() already shields its own cleanup, and the asymmetry was the bug: _force_close() drops both handles *before* its first await, so a cancellation landing inside Client.close() propagated out with the transport unreleased and nothing left to retry. For a stdio server that is the orphaned child process StdioTransport's detached connect task is still holding, and McpManager.stop() calls disconnect(), so a second Ctrl-C during shutdown reaches it. errors = await asyncio.shield(self._force_close()) makes the teardown match connect()'s, with the same reasoning recorded in the docstring so the asymmetry is not reintroduced. The shield alone was not enough for the state: the CancelledError is raised at the shielded await, before the bookkeeping after it, so a client cancelled part-way through its teardown kept reporting CONNECTED with no transport behind it. connect() returns True early for a connected client, so McpManager.reconnect() would have adopted exactly that. _state is therefore assigned before the await rather than after it, mirroring _force_close() dropping the handles before its own awaits. last_error is untouched by both: _force_close's handler stays Exception-only, so a cancellation is still never recorded as a cleanup failure, and the errors a clean teardown collects are joined exactly as before. Constraint: no public contract changes -- McpConnectionState, the constructor, server_name, state, last_error, tools, connect() -> bool, disconnect() -> None and call_tool() -> str all behave as they did on the uncancelled path, and every existing test still passes unmodified. Confidence: high -- the failure is reproduced deterministically by a fake whose close() blocks, and the new tests fail against the unshielded code with close() provably unfinished. Scope-risk: low. The only behaviour change beyond the shield is the ordering of the state assignment, which is unobservable on the uncancelled path; mcp_client.py stays at 100% statement and branch coverage and pylint is clean.

Reject MCP names that cannot become function names
This check only warns about length, but McpServerConfig.parse permits any nonblank server key and the advertised tool name is copied verbatim. A server named my.server (or a tool named read.file) therefore registers mcp__my.server__read, which is included in every chat request; OpenAI-compatible function schemas require names to contain only letters, digits, _, or - and reject the entire request when one tool violates that constraint. A warning does not isolate the bad server, so validate/encode the composed name or skip invalid tools before publishing them. OpenAI Chat Completions API reference
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
The disconnect docstring promised the shield "must not interrupt Client.close() midway" without saying what the promise costs. shield cannot deliver that against a loop that is itself being torn down: the teardown is cancelled like any other await and stack.aclose() never runs. That is structural, identical to connect()'s existing shield, and the second Ctrl-C that motivates the fix is usually about to create it. Both now bound the claim to the event loop outliving the cancellation. The state is also described as "the transport is gone from the instant the teardown starts", which is one tick optimistic -- the assignment lands before _force_close has run its first statement, so the handles are still live for one iteration. Reworded to what the code means, teardown begun rather than transport released; nothing observable runs in that window. The DISCONNECTED state this leaves behind on the shutdown-signal path was an uncovered behaviour change, so both tests now assert it. A fresh McpClient already reads DISCONNECTED, so both set a CONNECTED pre-state first -- without it the new assertion passes whatever disconnect() does. Also scoped the no-match= rationale in the disconnect cancellation helper to 3.10, the interpreter it was observed on; 3.14 (what CI runs, per .github/workflows/ci.yml) keeps the cancel() message.

What this adds
MCP client support. MitoCode can now connect to external MCP servers — remote over
Streamable HTTP, or local scripts launched as a subprocess over stdio — and expose their tools
to the agent exactly like the built-in
bash/read_file/write_file.Four modules under
src/mitocode/backend/mcp/, plus three additions to the shared toolregistry:
mcp_config.pyMcpServerConfig— normalises the Claude Desktop config shape, validates it, builds the matching transportmcp_client.pyMcpClient— one server: connect, cached tool discovery, invoke, safe teardownmcp_manager.pyMcpManager— lifecycle, failure isolation, statustool_manager.py(modified)parameters_schemakwarg,unregister(),register_mcp_client()Design: one
Clientper server, notClientGroup.ClientGroup.__aenter__connects everyclient, so one bad server would take down all tools. Self-managing gives per-server failure
isolation — the property this whole feature rests on.
Naming
MCP tools register as
mcp__<server>__<tool>, so the model can tell they are external, andcross-server collisions cannot occur.
Testing
Every number below was produced by running the gate, not estimated.
pytest test/ --cov=src/mitocode --cov-fail-under=80→ 396 passed, 2 xpassed, totalcoverage 88.89%
mcp_config.py,mcp_client.py,mcp_manager.py: 100% statement and branchblack src test --target-version=py310→ cleanpylint src/mitocode→ 9.68 / 10 (CI gate is 8.0)pyright→ 5 errors, allreportMissingImportsforfastmcp/loguru. This is a localvenv-resolution artefact:
logurualready fails on the pre-existingtool_manager.py, so itis not introduced here and does not reproduce under CI.
The
2 xpassedare deliberate: two tests assert the secure contract behind axfail(strict=False)marker. They fail today for the right reason and XPASS the moment thedefect is closed, so a future fix does not have to fight the suite to land.
One test spawns a real subprocess
test_local_stdio_server_end_to_endwrites a minimal FastMCP server totmp_pathand launchesit with
sys.executable. It is the only test in the feature that proves the local-server pathactually works end to end. It was independently verified to fail against three deliberately
broken stdio paths, each time leaving no orphan process behind.
How this was built
Implemented task by task, each through a four-stage loop: implement, task review, test
hardening, test review. Two independent code reviews per task, with a fix loop until clean.
That process found real defects that the tests did not — which is why the test-hardening stage
exists. Three worth naming, all fixed and pinned:
call_tool's error path interpolated the framework's error textverbatim, and that text is a pydantic error carrying
input_value=<the argument>. A realsecret reached the exception message. Fixed by redacting argument payloads.
connect()caught onlyException, so aCancelledError—a
BaseException— bypassed it and left stdio's detached connect task running. Fixed withcleanup-then-propagate under
asyncio.shield.name as default arguments, sharing a namespace with the model's
**kwargs. A server tooladvertising an argument named
_tool_nameredirected the call to a different tool on thatserver, including one never registered — bypassing the collision guard. Fixed with a closure
factory.
Known limitations — deliberate, and unpinned in the tests
McpServerConfigis shallowly frozen.frozen=Trueblocks field assignment butargs/env/headersremain mutable and are handed by reference to the transport. Thepinned guarantee is exception messages only — the dataclass auto-
reprstill printsurlverbatim.
connect()writes raw transport exception text intolast_error, which reaches the sameTUI and log sink as the rest. HTTP/stdio handshake failures routinely quote the URL or the
command line. This path has no redaction.
headerstokens only.refresh()re-discovers on demand; there is notools/list_changedsubscription.
AgentSessionsnapshots the tool registry at construction, soMcpManager.start()mustcomplete before any agent session is created. This is existing
AgentSessionbehaviour,documented on
start().Not in this PR
__main__.py. The classes are complete and tested; nothing constructs aMcpManagerin production yet. There is currently no production caller ofMcpManager,so the cancellation-propagation contract on
stop()has no consumer depending on it.declare_tool'sparameters_schemametadata tier is advertised inregister()'s docstringbut unreachable —
declare_toolwrites no such key. Either give it the parameter or drop thelookup; left for a follow-up.
McpManager's test-hardening pass was interrupted by a rate limit and is not yet complete. The implementation is review-clean; this stage is outstanding.

Commit
b4dbaf4removes three supersededexperiments/scripts. That is pre-existing ownerwork that was staged before this feature started; it is included here because the branch was
already carrying it. It is unrelated to MCP and carries no MCP dependencies.
