Ultimate Quiz

Description:

"Ultimate Quiz" is my final project for CS50x — a terminal-based Python quiz game that tests your knowledge across all topics covered in the course, from C to SQL.


📜 Project Overview

"Ultimate Quiz" represents my comprehensive final project submission for Harvard's CS50x course. This terminal-based Python application serves as both a knowledge assessment tool and a celebration of the entire CS50 curriculum. The game systematically tests understanding across all major CS50 topics - from basic C programming concepts to advanced Python, SQL, and web development principles covered in the course.

The project was developed over approximately 40 hours of focused work, incorporating everything I learned during CS50x about software design, problem solving, and Python development. What began as a simple quiz script evolved into a fully-featured application with persistent scoring, dynamic feedback systems, and careful attention to user experience - all within the constraints of a terminal interface.

Comprehensive Question Bank

50+ handcrafted questions covering all CS50 topics:

  • C Programming (Memory Allocation, Pointers, Data Structures)

  • Python (Syntax, OOP Concepts, Libraries)

  • SQL (Database Design, Query Optimization)

  • Web Development (Flask, APIs, JavaScript basics)

  • Computer Science Fundamentals (Algorithms, Complexity)

  • Question difficulty scaling from basic recall to application-based problems

  • Modular question structure allowing easy addition of new questions

Intelligent Scoring System

  • Weighted scoring based on question difficulty
  • Dynamic feedback that adapts to user performance
  • Performance analytics showing strengths/weaknesses by topic
  • Time bonus multiplier for quick, correct answers

Technical Implementation

  • Object-oriented architecture with separate classes for:
    • Question (handles question text, options, correct answer)
    • QuizEngine (manages game flow and state)
    • ScoreManager (handles leaderboard persistence)
  • Cross-platform terminal colors using termcolor library
  • Input validation protecting against all edge cases
  • Configurable settings via constants at the top of files

Persistent Leaderboard

  • JSON-based storage for portability and easy inspection
  • Top 10 scores tracking with timestamps
  • Data validation to prevent corruption
  • ASCII-art trophy for top scorers

  • quiz.py – main game logic, handles question flow, scoring, and feedback
  • requirements.txt – specifies required Python packages (termcolor)

🧠 Detailed Design Decisions

Terminal Interface Rationale

While considering GUI frameworks like Tkinter or PyQt, I deliberately chose a terminal interface to:

  • Stay true to CS50's problem set style
  • Focus on core logic rather than UI design
  • Ensure maximum compatibility across platforms
  • Keep the project lightweight and fast

The terminal approach also presented interesting challenges in creating an engaging user experience without graphical elements, leading to creative use of:

  • ASCII art and borders
  • Color-coded feedback
  • Progressive disclosure of information
  • Careful screen formatting

Data Persistence Approach

The leaderboard system went through several iterations:

  • Initial version: Plain text file storage
  • Intermediate version: CSV format
  • Final version: JSON storage chosen because:
    • Human-readable format
    • Native Python support
    • Easy to validate and extend
    • Supports complex nested structures if needed

The implementation includes:

  • Atomic writes to prevent corruption
  • Automatic backup creation
  • Data validation on load
  • Graceful fallback if file is missing

Code Organization Philosophy

The project demonstrates CS50 principles of:

  • Modularity: Separating concerns into logical files
  • Abstraction: Hiding implementation details behind clean interfaces
  • Memory safety: Proper resource handling
  • Defensive programming: Extensive input validation

Particular attention was paid to:

  • Meaningful variable names
  • Consistent code style (PEP 8)
  • Docstrings and comments
  • Error handling at all levels

🛠️ Technical Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1: Maintaining State Across Game Sessions

Problem: Needed persistent storage that would survive program restarts Solution: Implemented JSON-based leaderboard with atomic writes

Challenge 2: Dynamic Question Handling

Problem: Managing shuffled questions without repetition Solution: Created question queue that repopulates only when exhausted

Challenge 3: Cross-Platform Color Support

Problem: Terminal colors behaved differently across OSes Solution: Used termcolor with fallback to uncolored text

Challenge 4: User Input Sanitization

Problem: Handling malformed input at every interaction point Solution: Created reusable input validation functions with:

  • Type checking
  • Range validation
  • Automatic retry prompts
  • Clear error messages
