Open Hardware Lab is not a finished product. It is an invitation to build, adapt, understand and share.
Open Hardware Lab is an open-source initiative for accessible tools, hardware, software, documentation and knowledge around electronics documentation, imaging, measurement and experimentation.
Publishing source files is only one part of being open. OHL projects should also be understandable, reproducible, adaptable to different budgets and local conditions, and welcoming to community improvements.
- Understandable: document why design decisions were made.
- Reproducible: provide enough information for others to repeat the work.
- Accessible: prefer commonly available materials and tools where technically sensible.
- Modular: allow users to build only the parts they need.
- Adaptable: encourage versions tailored to local materials, budgets and equipment.
- International: consider metric and imperial systems and worldwide availability.
- Non-destructive: preserve original data wherever possible.
- User-controlled: automation should assist the user, not take away control.
- Community-driven: improvements, alternative builds and new ideas are welcome.
- OHL Imaging Suite — technical raster photography, overlap assistance, editable grids, image review, XY-stage control, stitching, non-destructive projects and flexible export.
- OHL XY Stage — a universal positioning platform with Foundation, Maker and Lab approaches.
- OHL Calibration Toolkit — printable metric/imperial calibration and alignment tools.
- OHL Shield Box — accessible RF shielding-box designs from hardware-store builds to advanced variants.
- OHL Guides — practical documentation for imaging, lighting, calibration, stitching, measurement and construction.
Your build does not have to be identical to ours.
If another material is easier to obtain where you live, if you have a different controller, if you build an XY stage from LEGO Technic, or if you find a better solution: adapt it and share what you learned.
OHL is currently in its Foundation phase. Specifications, prototypes and documentation will evolve openly.
Core documentation should be available in English and German where practical. Visual guides should be as language-independent as possible.
Software, hardware designs and documentation may require different open licenses. Licensing will be selected deliberately for each repository or content type. Until a license is explicitly added, no additional rights should be assumed.

Dokumentiere möglichst, was du verändert hast und warum.
