perf(database): sync object databases in one pass instead of one per database - #181
Databases loaded slowly and every edit froze the page, because the object-database sync did one full pass over every row for each database, both after each edit and on each load.
Why
The owner reported that databases "take too much time to load". I measured the largest live account through the bridge (read-only, 2026-10-26): 83 object databases, 8,646 rows, 2.7 MiB per GET /api/object-databases. Two client paths were O(databases × rows):
After each edit:pushDirtyObjectDatabases called sliceDatabase once per database, and each call scans every page.
On each load:hydrate called withServerSlice once per server row, and each call rebuilds the whole pages and views maps.
What changed
sliceAllDatabases(state) groups pages and views by database in one pass. The flush uses it.
reconcileServerDatabases(...) in objectDatabaseReconcile.ts is the pure half of the pull. It decides per row (replace / union / keep), then rebuilds the state once with withReplacedSlices. hydrate calls it; its I/O, tombstone pruning and registry steps are unchanged.
withServerSlice and withMergedSlice keep their signatures and now wrap serverSliceFor and unionSliceFor plus the one-pass assembler.
make test-bench BENCH=… is a new target, and CI's quality job runs the object-database sync bench.
Trade-offs
I kept the hash function byte-identical: djb2 over a key-sorted stringify. A new hash would mark every database dirty on the first load after deploy, and the union path would then re-push all 83. That is safe, but heavy.
I did not add a per-object hash cache. It would be correct only if no code mutates a page in place, and that is unproven here. A stale cache would silently skip a push.
Still open, for the next PR: the 2.7 MiB response is not gzipped, and a realtime nudge re-downloads every database instead of the one that changed.
Evidence
tests/bench/object-database-sync.bench.ts, on a fixture shaped like that account (p95):
Path
Before
After
flush, slice + hash
184.75 ms
31.22 ms
pull, reconcile
713.99 ms
54.62 ms
CI budgets are 100 ms and 170 ms, so the old loops fail them.
tests/canvas/object-database-reconcile.test.ts runs the old per-database loop against the new one on 500 random accounts. The accounts mix clean, dirty, untracked, local-only and server-only databases, rows with colliding ids, tombstones, and server rows without a schema. Both versions produce the same per-database content and row order, push baseline and changed flag. It killed 3 of 3 mutants: union always replacing, the server hash taken from local, and the dirty check without the local-schema guard.
Improved object-database synchronization so local edits are retained when they differ from the last synced version, while server updates are applied when there are no conflicting local changes.
Deleted pages are excluded when merging local and server database data, preventing removed content from reappearing during synchronization.
Synchronization now handles databases missing from either the local or server data more consistently, helping preserve available database content during updates.
…per database
An account with 83 databases and 8,646 rows blocked the page for ~185 ms after
every edit and ~714 ms on every load (p95): the flush sliced the whole state
once per database before hashing, and the pull laid each server row down on
the whole state in turn, O(databases x rows) both ways. The flush now groups
pages and views by database in one pass (sliceAllDatabases), and the pull
decides per row first and rebuilds the state once (reconcileServerDatabases).
Measured with tests/bench/object-database-sync.bench.ts on a fixture shaped
like that account: flush 184.75 -> 31.22 ms p95, pull 713.99 -> 54.62 ms p95.
A canvas test runs the old per-database loop against the new one on 500
random accounts and finds the same state, push baseline and changed flag; it
kills 3 of 3 mutants. CI now runs the bench, whose budgets fail the old loops.
The object-database bridge now uses shared helpers to slice and reconcile database state. The pull request adds seeded reconciliation tests, sync benchmarks, a Makefile benchmark target, and a root-scope CI step. It also updates the browser workspace-creation fallback for phone-width layouts.
Changes: Object-database sync
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Build and replace database slices src/widgets/database-view/model/objectDatabaseSlice.ts
Adds helpers to slice all databases, create server and union slices, and replace slices in state. Existing server and merged slice helpers now use these operations.
Reconcile server state through the bridge src/widgets/database-view/model/objectDatabaseReconcile.ts, src/widgets/database-view/model/objectDatabaseBridgeSync.ts, tests/canvas/object-database-reconcile.test.ts
Adds reconcileServerDatabases to merge or replace slices and update pushed hashes. The bridge delegates hydration reconciliation to it and builds dirty slices in one pass. Tests compare the reconciler with a sequential oracle across 500 seeded inputs and check no-op and empty-server cases.
Benchmark sync operations in CI tests/bench/object-database-fixture.ts, tests/bench/object-database-sync.bench.ts, Makefile, .github/workflows/ci.yml
Adds an account-state fixture and benchmarks for slicing and hashing, cloning, JSON serialization, and reconciliation. Adds a Docker-backed test-bench target and runs the object-database benchmark in the root CI scope.
Browser workspace creation

Summary
Open Explorer when the add-page button is absent tests/browser/core/app.mjs
The workspace-creation fallback waits for the add-page button or Explorer tab to attach. If the button is absent, it opens Explorer before continuing with the button interaction.
Resolve the reachable cross-database record-loss path before merging; the CI benchmark thresholds also warrant owner awareness.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 254e1
Existing access controls and recovery behavior are preserved in the inspected paths. No newly introduced security issue was verified, but reconciliation behavior for duplicate record identifiers across databases remains insufficiently defined.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Crafted stored database state can affect reconciliation across the current owner's globally keyed page and view maps. The inspected handlers constrain this path to that owner's records; no new cross-account reachability or privilege gain was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Nested record identity is not validated by the inspected upsert handler: state is checked only as a non-array object. Both the base implementation and the new assembler can overwrite colliding global keys. This is a pre-existing integrity condition, not an established new vulnerability; snapshot-based reconciliation changes its decision ordering.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The push lifecycle retains its hydration prerequisite and single-flush gate. Successful writes record their snapshot hash, failed writes remove their baseline for a later retry, failed deletes retain theirs, and the in-flight gate is released in finally. These controls are unchanged; they do not establish cross-tab atomicity.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define and enforce the cross-database record-identity contract at ingestion and assembly, with explicit collision behavior and regression cases. This would resolve the existing ambiguity rather than remediate a verified PR-introduced security finding.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Align the timing in this comment with the benchmark record.
The comment gives 163 ms per flush. The benchmark file and the PR description give 184.75 ms for the replaced sliceDatabase loop. The same mismatch appears in objectDatabaseReconcile.ts Line 15, which says 546 ms. The benchmark file and the PR give 713.99 ms for that loop. Update both comments to the recorded numbers, or remove the numbers and point to the benchmark file.

Reconsider the CI budgets for the two platform benchmarks.
structuredClone and JSON.stringify do not exercise the changed synchronization code. Their p95 limits can therefore fail the quality (root) job independently of a regression in the one-pass sync. Keep these cases as local-only measurements, or give them a larger margin. Keep the sliceAllDatabases and reconcileServerDatabases cases as CI gates.

On CI's 390x844 and 375x812 runs the shell opens on Home with the Explorer

never mounts: main's menuViewport failure (run 40246217458, shard 4). The

Reject duplicate page and view keys before replacing slices.
The bridge accepts any JSON object as a database state. Hydration reconciles each returned database independently and then overlays all replacement slices. If two accepted states contain the same page or view key, the later slice overwrites the earlier record.
nextPushed still records both server hashes. The merged state then has a hash mismatch for the overwritten database, so the follow-up pushDirtyObjectDatabases call can upload that database without its lost record.
