Save settings atomically; no console flash for headsetcontrol on Windows - #12
Two fixes from the read-only devices/workers bug hunt.
1. A crash while saving reset every setting.Settings::save wrote settings.json in place (truncate, then write). A crash or power cut mid-write left a file load() can't parse, and unwrap_or_default() silently reset everything: theme, LCD image, sidetone, idle timer. Save now uses the existing write_atomic (write .tmp, then rename), which the widget status file already uses.
2. Console windows flashing on Windows.headsetcontrol (polled every 30 s), amixer and upower were spawned without CREATE_NO_WINDOW. Rig Hub is a GUI-subsystem app, so each spawn would flash a black console window. They now go through one command() helper that sets the flag, the same way the update check's curl already does.
Checks: cargo build, cargo test (12 passed), cargo clippy --all-targets clean on Linux. I couldn't type-check the Windows target locally (a C dependency needs mingw), so the Windows CI job is the check there.
Not changed (low):thread::spawn(...).unwrap() at startup, and a two-launch race on the single-instance lock. Both are very rare and harmless in practice.
Settings are saved by writing the complete file before replacing the existing one, reducing the risk of incomplete settings. Settings changes are also saved without holding up other state updates.
Headset operations on Windows no longer display a command window while running. Command behavior, output handling, and existing error handling remain unchanged.
- Settings::save wrote settings.json in place. A crash or power loss mid-write
left a file load() couldn't parse, and every setting silently reset to its
default. It now goes through write_atomic (write, then rename).
- headsetcontrol (polled every 30 s), amixer and upower were spawned without
CREATE_NO_WINDOW, so on Windows each poll would flash a console window. The
update check already did this for curl.

Audio subprocess creation now uses a shared command constructor that suppresses Windows console windows. Settings saves use atomic writes, with optional syncing before rename. Settings changes are saved after the state lock is released.

Summary
Atomic-write behavior src/main.rs
write_atomic accepts a durable flag and syncs the temporary file when the flag is true. Status-file and KDE widget writes pass false.
Settings save flow src/workers.rs, src/main.rs
Settings::save uses the canonicalized settings path when available, or the original path otherwise. Settings are cloned under the state lock, then saved after the lock is released.
Settings saves are now atomic and synced, and console windows are suppressed for audio commands. A few minor edge cases remain: a failed save is not retried, and concurrent Windows instances could race on the temporary file. They are worth addressing but should not block merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 2a1a6
Atomic replacement improves protection against interrupted saves, but can remove restrictive permissions from an existing settings file. Potential disclosure is limited to local preferences and file paths, and depends on whether another local user can access the containing directory.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: The new settings replacement path does not preserve an existing restrictive file mode. On Unix, replacing a 0600 settings.json with a newly created temporary file under umask 022 can produce a 0644 target. If another local user can traverse the parent directories, previously protected preferences and the LCD image path become readable. The helper already existed, but this PR newly applies its replacement semantics to settings.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The supported disclosure scope is the affected user's settings JSON, including an image pathname rather than image contents. Exploitation requires local filesystem access through the containing directories; the evidence does not establish privilege escalation or exposure of another service or data store.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained information-disclosure finding is consistent with the base/head comparison: a save can replace a previously restricted target with a more readable temporary file. Another local principal who can traverse the directory can then read it without gaining the application user's identity. Actual directory accessibility remains unknown.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — An owner-only config parent would prevent the cross-user read despite broader file permissions. However, Settings::save only creates its parent directory; it does not apply the separate private_dir control used for status files. That control is therefore not dispositive counterevidence for settings.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The fixed temporary pathname requires serialized writers for its atomic-publication guarantee. Startup locking is Unix-only and screenshot launches bypass it, so cross-process serialization is not universal. Overlapping saves can interfere with temporary-file contents or rename. Direct writes were also unsynchronized before this PR; a new cross-principal attack is not established.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give settings replacement an explicit permission contract: create temporary files with restrictive access before writing data and preserve appropriate restrictive target metadata. Use unique temporary files with defined cleanup and writer coordination rather than relying on one shared temporary pathname.

write_atomic writes settings.json.tmp and renames it over settings.json without syncing either the file or its directory. After a power loss, the renamed file can contain partial or empty data, although the rename itself completed. This defeats the crash-safety goal stated in the PR. A partial file can fail to parse on the next launch.

Resolve a symlinked settings.json before the atomic rename.
write_atomic renames its temporary file onto the path it receives. For a symlink, that replaces the link itself and leaves the target unchanged. The previous in-place write followed the link, so settings reached the linked file. After this change, a save can disconnect settings.json from a dotfiles or sync setup.
Resolve the path first, then write atomically to the resolved target. The temporary file stays in the target's directory, so the rename remains on one filesystem.

Handle a failed settings write instead of marking it saved.
write_atomic needs write permission on the settings directory to create its temporary file. The earlier in-place write needed only write permission on settings.json. If the directory denies file creation while the file stays writable, the save fails. Settings::save discards that failure at src/workers.rs:21, and App::ui then sets self.saved at src/main.rs:738. The unsaved change is not retried, and it is lost on restart.
Return the result from save and update self.saved only after a successful write. A failed write then remains pending and is attempted again on the next UI update.

Keep the existing file mode when settings.json is replaced.
write_atomic writes the new content to a temporary file with the default creation mode, then renames that file over settings.json. The rename replaces the old file's mode too. If a user restricted settings.json to 0600, the saved file can become readable under a permissive umask such as 0644. Settings stores lcd_image: Option<PathBuf>, a user-selected file path, so other local users can read that path. This regression needs a user-restricted settings file. Default-created files already get the umask mode.
Before the rename, copy the existing file's permission mode onto the temporary file. Apply the mode before the content is written, so the new content never exists with the wider mode. write_atomic is also used for the widget state file (src/main.rs:316) and at src/main.rs:638. Make the change in the helper, and confirm that those callers still work.

Use a per-process temp file in write_atomic.
Two Windows instances can save at the same time, because the single-instance lock is Unix-only. Both write the same path.with_extension("tmp") file. If one instance truncates that file after the other has written it but before the rename, the rename can publish an empty settings file. The second rename then fails because its temp file is gone, and write_atomic ignores the failure.
Until the truncating instance writes again, load reads an empty file and falls back to defaults. A crash in that window reproduces the reset this change is meant to prevent. A per-process temp name keeps each save on its own file.
A failed write can leave a PID-named temp file behind. Add cleanup if that matters.

Fixed in 2735656: write_atomic now sync_all()s the temp file before the rename, and Settings::save canonicalizes the path first so a symlinked settings.json keeps pointing at its target. Skipped the parent-directory fsync: losing only the rename after a power cut leaves the previous complete file, which is the safe outcome.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The first two (sync before rename, follow a symlink) are fixed in 2735656. Skipping the other three:
Retry a failed save: the save path always discarded failures, before and after this PR. The next settings change retries it, and retrying every frame would hammer the disk on a read-only config dir.
Preserve the destination's mode: settings.json and the status file are always created by Rig Hub with the default umask. No existing mode is worth carrying over.
Per-process temp name: Rig Hub is single-instance (socket lock), and settings and the status file use different paths, so no two writers share a temp file.

@SusieeTheLinuxUser I checked commit 2735656. write_atomic now syncs the temporary file before renaming it. Settings::save resolves an existing symlink target before writing.
I understand the decision to skip the parent-directory sync. One limit remains: without it, rename durability is filesystem-dependent, so recovery of the previous file after a power loss is not guaranteed. Linux fsync(2) documentation
Three other findings in this thread remain:
Settings::save discards write failures, but the UI marks the settings as saved.
Concurrent saves still share a temporary filename.
Replacement can discard restrictive file permissions.

@SusieeTheLinuxUser The earlier check confirmed that commit 2735656 syncs the temporary file before rename and resolves existing symlink targets.
I understand your decision to skip the other three changes. One clarification: the socket lock is Unix-only, so it does not prevent concurrent instances on Windows.

Sync the settings directory after the rename.
sync_all() flushes the temporary file's data before rename. The rename itself is a directory change. Without a directory sync, a power cut after a successful save can revert settings.json to its previous contents. This affects only the most recent settings change. The file is not corrupted.
On Unix, sync the parent directory after a durable rename:

Use a per-process temporary file name in write_atomic.
settings.save() and the other write_atomic callers all use the fixed name settings.tmp. Two processes that save at the same time can truncate and rename each other's temporary file. The published settings.json can then contain incomplete JSON. Settings::load replaces unreadable JSON with defaults, so the saved settings are lost.
The Unix single-instance listener prevents this case on Unix. The inspected source shows no equivalent guard on the Windows launch path. A per-process temporary name keeps each writer's data separate. Each rename then publishes a complete file.

Preserve the existing file mode when write_atomic replaces a file.
write_atomic creates the temporary file with std::fs::File::create and sets no mode. The new file gets the default mode, usually 0644 after the umask, and then replaces the target with rename. If a user restricted settings.json to 0600, the next save removes that restriction. Other local users who can traverse the settings directory can then read the file, which stores the user-selected lcd_image path. The application never sets 0600 on this file itself, so the exposure only occurs when the user applied the restrictive mode.
Copy the target file's mode to the temporary file. Set the mode when the temporary file is created, so no window exists where it has the default mode. Keep the Unix-specific code behind #[cfg(unix)]. The status file uses the same function, but its directory is already owner-only.

Review comment at @src/main.rs at line 325:
Update write_atomic to preserve the existing target file’s mode on the temporary
file, applying it at creation so the file is never briefly created with broader
default permissions. Keep mode handling behind Unix-specific configuration and
preserve the existing behavior when there is no target file.

Do not record settings as saved when the write fails.
Settings::save discards the bool that write_atomic returns. The caller then sets self.saved unconditionally. If the write fails, the in-memory settings and self.saved match, so the app does not retry. The next launch can load the older settings.json, and the user gets no error.
The fix is to return the write result and update self.saved only on success:
With this change, a failed save stays pending. The next frame retries the write while the settings differ from self.saved. A persistent failure, such as a read-only config directory, then repeats the write on every frame. Report the failure to the user, or throttle the retries.

Two fixes from the read-only devices/workers bug hunt.
1. A crash while saving reset every setting.
Settings::savewrotesettings.jsonin place (truncate, then write). A crash or power cut mid-write left a fileload()can't parse, andunwrap_or_default()silently reset everything: theme, LCD image, sidetone, idle timer. Save now uses the existingwrite_atomic(write.tmp, then rename), which the widget status file already uses.2. Console windows flashing on Windows.
headsetcontrol(polled every 30 s),amixerandupowerwere spawned withoutCREATE_NO_WINDOW. Rig Hub is a GUI-subsystem app, so each spawn would flash a black console window. They now go through onecommand()helper that sets the flag, the same way the update check'scurlalready does.Checks:
cargo build, cargo test(12 passed),cargo clippy --all-targetsclean on Linux. I couldn't type-check the Windows target locally (a C dependency needs mingw), so the Windows CI job is the check there. Not changed (low):
thread::spawn(...).unwrap()at startup, and a two-launch race on the single-instance lock. Both are very rare and harmless in practice.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
