SafeStreets

SafeStreet is a web-based prototype that helps users evaluate pedestrian walkability between two locations by providing a walkability score, safety verdict, and risk breakdown. Built to promote people-first streets, safer walking decisions, and sustainable cities.

This is our team project for our first-ever hackathon.

🚶‍♂️ SafeStreet

SafeStreet is a web-based prototype designed to help people understand how safe and walkable a route is before choosing to walk.
Instead of focusing only on distance or time, SafeStreet emphasizes pedestrian safety, walkability, and people-first urban design.

This project was built as part of a hackathon to explore how digital tools can support safer, healthier, and more sustainable cities.


🌍 Problem Statement

Many cities are designed primarily for vehicles rather than pedestrians.
As a result, people face unsafe walking conditions due to:

  • Poor or broken footpaths
  • Inadequate street lighting
  • Unsafe pedestrian crossings
  • High traffic density

This discourages walking, increases pollution and transport costs, and negatively affects public health and quality of life.


🎯 Solution

SafeStreet acts as a Walking Decision Assistant.

Users enter a starting location and destination, and the system provides:

  • A Walkability Score (0–100)
  • A clear safety verdict (Safe / Caution / Avoid)
  • A transparent risk breakdown explaining why the verdict was given

The goal is not just to show data, but to help users make informed walking decisions.

  • Risk breakdown based on:
    • Traffic conditions

    • Footpath quality
    • Pedestrian crossings
  • Clean, responsive, and demo-friendly UI

⚠️ Note: This is a prototype. The scoring logic is simulated for validation and demonstration purposes.
