Legal Issues
Our software is not violating any licensing agreements, as we are using the Blackboard API, Angular, and Kubernetes. Angular is licensed under MIT, which grants users the right to use, modify, and distribute the software without restriction. Kubernetes is simply for deployment, and we are currently working on receiving access to the Blackboard API. If access is unattainable, we will construct our own API with sample data to demonstrate the usability of the web app. We will keep a thorough documentation of all third-party services and software alongside their agreements, to ensure a smooth development process.
There should not be any major intellectual property constraints, as we are not physically importing any presentations, textbooks, or lectures from professors or educational companies. We may have trademark issues with the University of South Carolina or Blackboard itself, meaning we may have to contact them for uses of their logo and/or name if needed.
For our student users, clear terms of service will be in place to make sure that they do not use our app to break the law in any capacity. However, there should not be many chances to break the law to begin with, given that users are unable to upload any educational materials or communicate with other users. The extent of their uploading abilities consist of creating new tasks/events, marking tasks as complete, and calculating their grade in a class. Regardless, usage will still be monitored and there will be posted guidelines on legal use.
